As soon as I entered the place I knew it was going to be a real experience; the decor is rustic but cheerful; I was intrigued by the different barbecue sauce containers displayed all over and their home made pickles offerings. The place is veteran owned and has been in business for a while! All the choices on the menu are mouth watering good! After serious consideration we settled on sharing the Trinity platter which came with brisket, spare ribs and sausage links. We opted out of the sausage and upgraded the platter with pastrami. The Texas Trinity platter also comes with choices of pickles, one small sized side, we had Mac and Cheese, and 2 rolls. The portions were satisfying and good to share. The meats, oh my! It was mentioned to me that this is a really good bbq shop that used to be in Kearney. I've never had it before so I didn't know what to expect except it should be barbecued meat. I ordered a 1/2 pound pastrami sandwich and a side of creamy slaw. I did ask for a cup of water too, since they can give you free tap water. But back to the sandwich, it game on a tray where it was a puddle of grease on the paper. I don't normally eat so greasy so it took me by surprise and I pushed on through since I wanted to try it. Biting into it, felt like a struggle for some reason. Maybe it was too much meat but it was also just salty to the point where I was coughing a little. They have several types of sauces that helped it come together nicer. And the creamy slaw washed it down. On its own, I just could not finish the sandwich. Someone at my table got 1/4 pound pastrami but not the sandwich. It should have been similar to my sandwich but I had them try it. They said my sandwich was so salty that they may have even salted the bread too. It made me think I was just unlucky with my order as the salt built up in my sandwich. This was a military owned spot that served a number of BBQ dishes. The ordering was done at the counter if not made in advance. The food was then brought out when ready. The staff was very friendly and sociable. I had the Texas Trinity ($36.87). It came with a quarter pound of brisket, quarter rack of ribs, a jalapeno cheddar sausage link, a small side, house pickles and two rolls. The day I went, they unfortunately ran out of the sausage, so they replaced it with a quarter pound of pastrami with no added charge. The side I choose was mac and cheese and the pickles I had were horseradish. This was a large plate of food for sure. I liked how all the meats were sliced, nice thickness on them. The brisket was very tender and very flavorful. The ribs were a little inconsistent with texture, but the flavor was on point. My favorite was the pastrami. The pepper rub was great and just the overall consistency of the meat. The mac and cheese was very cheesy, but still solid and was ideal adding their multiple sauces. The only one I did not like was the white Alabama. All of the other ones, good. The horseradish pickles were a nice change up and paired well with the meats. I also tried the BBQ sundae that had smoked baked beans with pulled pork and vinegar slaw. The type of meat and slaw were chosen. This was very tasty too and another big portion. Will I go back? A couple of Fridays ago, my wife and I stopped here around three in the afternoon. It was not terribly busy and we were greeted by a very friendly counter woman who explained the menu. We ordered a large sampler platter, good for 3-4 people along with a couple of Ted's Teas. We found a table with the roll of paper towels there at the ready. It's low brow, but very clean. Other customers were there enjoying their meals. The tray was brought out along with the sides, plastic ware and paper dishes to use. The tray included pork ribs, cooked perfectly, sliced pastrami, sliced brisket and sliced turkey. All smoked to perfection, the brisket juicy and tender. Juicy smoked sausage with cheddar and jalapeño were next, along with over a cup's worth of pulled pork. The sides were baked beans, yummy with little chunks of pineapple, an unexpected, but pleasant surprise. Mac and cheese was creamy and this was the best Cole slaw I've had in some time (we chose the creamy, not the vinegar based). Rolls and pickles were included. Different sauces are provided depending on your taste. Good barbecue in New Jersey is extremely hard to find. Do not pass go, stop here. Everything cooked to perfection and very tasty. As we were eating, we spoke with another couple who suggested we get the banana pudding. We took an order home along with a chocolate dessert akin to a large whoopie pie. Both were delicious. I got the Texas Trinity, which comes with 1/4lb brisket, 1/4 rack of pork ribs, 1 sausage link, a small side, house pickles, and 2 rolls. I added 1/4lb of turkey breast which is a MUST try! For sides, I got their mac and cheese and baked beans... AMAZING! Their baked beans have pineapple chunks which is surprisingly a great mix. Not like their meats really need it, but they also 2 house sauces available; one bbq style and another spicy one. Best part is they provide small to-go containers to take extra sauce home! I didn't get to try any desserts but I saw a few treats available for purchase. The service was speedy and extremely welcoming. They only had one counter person when we were there so it took quite some time for us to order our food, but it was well worth the wait. To be transparent, I didn't dine in. There are a few supposedly BBQ spots somewhat in the general area, but this place actually does a decent job. Nearly perfect. The brisket in the sandwich was amazingly tender and had a good dry rub to it. A bit fatty here and there, but it was fine. Only negative is they don't provide any sauce by default, not even a house BBQ sauce, which is fairly odd for a BBQ establishment and a bit like shooting your own foot over leaving a great impression. I did take a gamble and bought a little sauce cup of Alabama white and devil's dog spit sauce. The latter was a BBQ sauce with a kick, very good. The former was terrible and too vinegary for my liking. Sadly, the sauces were not well described, so what a waste. I was also disappointed that they do not have an all beef or brisket and turkey combo. Not a porky fan here, unless we mean the cartoon character. Mac & cheese was kind of sad, like out of the box, and also kind of dry. Some of the older pictures made it look good, but they must've changed it years back. Potato salad was surprisingly pretty good, I'd get this again if I ever had a craving. The pickles weren't too shabby either. They don't have a side item meal or combo deal. I also didn't see any corn bread or chili on the menu. They did have banana pudding, which I need to try next time (sadly I had ice cream an hour before my order). I liked it, but I didn't get to try everything. We were headed home on a Sunday, I want to say around 6:30-7, and the pork ribs and sausage were already gone. We did pastrami, pulled pork, turkey, brisket and beef ribs. I think we got the rest of the brisket though, I heard the people behind me getting told they were out of something I got. I think bottom line, just get here early. So yea, the food was good. Beef ribs super tender and fatty. Brisket was excellent. The turkey was very smokey, but the pepper crust was just overpowering. Pastrami very salty and again, that pepper crust was too much. I wish they had more/better sauces. I didn't really care for any of them. The brisket was ok but very mushy and and inconsistent texture-wise. Not terrible, but not memorable either--kind of lacked that rich, smoky flavor you expect from good BBQ. The pulled pork was extremely dry and lacked flavor. The mac and cheese and baked beans were okay, but nothing special. To be fair, some people seem to really enjoy this place and praise the establishment, but my experience just didn't match that. It wasn't bad enough to complain loudly, but definitely not good enough to make me want to come back. Overall, it's one of those places that's just... fine. One of my favorite small businesses in this area. Perhaps the friendliest service I've had at any BBQ restaurant I've been to. This trip we had the brisket and pulled pork, with mac & cheese and the vinegar slaw. Brisket was excellent - perfect amount marbling, good smoke ring; crust perfect mix of seasonings, including the perfect amount of coarse black pepper - the way it should be. Pulled pork was flavorful and moist, without being greasy. Slaw was delicious as was the mac & cheese. Their home made sauces we tried included the espresso based sauce (nice), devils something (right amount of heat) and the Carolina mustard (excellent, tart / sour / sweet - some of the best I've had). All in all - some of the best BBQ I've had, rivaling pits I've been too in NC, TX and MO. They support veterans and first responders - be sure to ask them about it. I asked 3 members of my family to give a rating and I averaged it out with mine. We came up with 4 stars. This place is a drive for us but since the Kearny location is closed we made the trip. Customer service is great! Kind of pricey but I guess expected during these times. Food was good. I wish the sauces would've been better tasting. Chicken was good and not dry. Brisket was delicious . The ribs were tender so wasn't difficult to bite into. Pulled pork was decent but could've been tastier. The pickles weren't good we actually asked for them to exchange them which they were nice enough to do. Mac and cheese was fine. The kids enjoyed it. The beans were so good and slightly sweet. Drinks seemed to be fine as my husband and two kids enjoyed them. Banana pudding was tasty and made for a good dessert late at night. We would come back but not order the family meal, we would probably customize it to just the ribs and brisket which were the favorites. Lots of indoor seating and pretty spread out which was nice since we did have the kids with us. Kept pretty clean and the bathrooms were also clean. read more

I stopped by this place as I had a craving for some Southern barbecue. I wanted the beef ribs, but they were out. Apparently, someone purchased three beef ribs earlier in the day. I guess they only have three beef ribs total (1 star off)? So I got some barbecue beef brisket and pastrami. They both were tender and smokey, but did not seem flavorful to me (1 star off). I needed to dip them in a lot of barbecue sauce to enjoy them. They do have good barbecue sauce -- the Sweet Sweet 'Que and the Espresso Barbecue were delicious. I could dip anything in them, even detestable vegetables. I learned that they show their meat availability online. After I got home, I checked their website and it seems like most items were out. I think they must have very low inventory daily, which is not the best way to run a restaurant. This place keeps serving up awesome barbecue, and I think they keep getting even better. This time we all got the Texas Trinity - 1/4 lb Brisket which was tender, perfect, with a nice black bark. I could eat it every day. 1/4 rack of pork ribs, which are tasty with good texture, slightly more toothsome than when I make them myself, but that's just a preference, there is no flaw in these ribs. Then you get 1 Jalapeño cheddar sausage, which is large and bursting with flavor. It is spicy and cheesy and porky all at the same time. I love this sausage. With the trinity, you get a side and choice of house pickles. I went with the horseradish pickles which were good but not as much kick as I wanted. The table also got the garlic pickles and the dill, I tried them all and thumbs up all around. This time I got the potato salad as my side, which was fine, but too creamy for me. The baked beans got a good word at the table as smoky and not too sweet, with chunks of meat. Collard greens also delivered. I used the rolls to create mini sausage and brisket sandwiches, with potato and coleslaw - it's a platter you can really enjoy and have fun with. Last time we got the Big Ol' Beef Rib which delivered super tender and unctuous beef flavor. This rib was giant and leftovers made 2 additional lunches. We also got pulled pork last time, which keeps the pork flavor without killing it with sugary sauce. Add the sauces that you want, the usually have at least 3 or 4 kinds.
