I ordered a rib dinner with a side of "Spanish rice"and collard greens. The "Spanish rice" was no joke! This was Puerto Rican arroz con gandules at it finest! Tasted like real P.R. goodness, almost tasted like it was made by family! Collard greens were tasty the leaves were tender but not soggy. I'm not a connoisseur of collards but I enjoyed. I had the ribs covered in jerk sauce. The jerk was delicious with a mild spice. Ribs were jucy and smoked with a nice rub. I also sampled the chicken dinner which was well seasoned then doused with spicy and jerk sauce. You get a half chicken, 2 sides and a generic cornbread for $11, that's impressive! Stopped by Rodgers Real BBQ after seeing the reviews and they did not disappoint. I called to check if they were open just cause it was my first time going and I didn't want to waste a trip. I tried the pulled pork, chicken both ways, ribs both ways, Mac and cheese, collared greens, coleslaw, and rice. They also threw in some cornbread. Everything was cooked well. The pork had a little kick to it, and the meat was juicy and flavorful. The mac and cheese was awesome. The packaging was a little messy but I expected that because it's a bbq place and they were rushing a little. I came with a large order and they were very patient with me even though I caused a bit of a line. He even called me afterwards to ask if everything was good. Can not say enough about this place. Don't let the scenic view of the jail throw you off, treat yourself to some great bbq. I love chicken and I got half a chicken with the cole slaw and baked beans. If you see a building with a lot of U-haul vehicles, Rodger's Real BBQ is right at the entrance. Combo Meal ($15): This includes a handful of pulled pork, barbecued chicken, two ribs, and a slice of corn bread with your choice of two sides; the sauce--I asked for mild--is drizzled on top of the meat (or you could ask for it on the side). The pulled pork was tender and juicy; it had a good balance of sweet and a little salty. The chicken thigh I received was cooked well, while the ribs were pretty tender. The ribs were flavorful, especially with the extra sauce added. I liked my two sides--collard greens and the mac and cheese. The mac and cheese was good--not salty but not bland either--and the greens were salty but not overly briny. I'm not a fan of the corn bread, though. I found it a bit dry. We also ordered a Rib Dinner ($12), which comes with three ribs and two sides (we chose Spanish rice and collard greens). We asked for mild sauce for both meals, but you could ask for spicy if you want a little kick. Most of the other barbeque places around here don't really smoke their meat. Or if they do, you can't really taste it. At Rodgers, it's definitely there. You can taste it, you can see the smoke rings, and he likes to keep the bark on. As for the sides/sauce - I never thought I'd like collard greens but he somehow makes it work. The smoky flavor and BBQ sauce of the ribs were 5-worthy, but a couple of the ribs were a little tough (but still amazingly flavorful), which was more like 4-worthy, but given what a cool guy Todd is and the simple chutzpah he has to open an open-pit BBQ joint out of a truck across the street from the Rahway State Prison (East Jersey technically) tips me to 5 stars. We chatted for a bit, he gave me a free sample then tried to convince me to try the cole slaw and baked beans (for free also) and I just had to tell him no, as I simply don't like either, especially beans, no matter how well made - A for effort, though. Turns out he worked at the Merck cafeteria in the late 80s/early 90s and I started working there in 1989, so it's likely we at least crossed paths. And as my wife Judy will tell you, I always liked the MK cafe. I've heard there are usually lines, but at 1:30 pm on a Wednesday, I didn't have to wait and I had plenty of room at one of the 3 wooden picnic tables he has set up behind the truck. Place is a little tough to find, but it's by the U-haul place, directly across from the prison. Will definitely go back and will bring some coworkers! read more

Generous portions, mustard based bbq sauce sooo good! Coleslaw fresh and juicy, did I mention the bbq sauce? Sooo good! We sat in the shade back behind the truck at a picnic table perfect. 'Rodger' not sure of the fellas name checked in on us a few times. Making sure we were enjoying, offered some fresh rice and samples of his boiled peanuts there were out of this world. We also 'waited a few mins' for Rodger to let us sample his fried fish with home made tarter sauce Hot and outstanding can only imagine a sandwich made from that. It's been a few years since I've been to Rodgers, but I always remembered that they were good. They've only gotten better since, and I mean exponentially better! Perfectly smoky ribs, full of flavor, and a great hot BBQ sauce that pairs up really well with it. Collard greens are excellent, but an unexpected star was the mac & cheese. I cannot tell you how many BBQ joints I've been to where the mac & cheese was just there, with no real flavor to speak of. I just thought that was the way it was supposed to be, but not here!
