    Playing cards at Rodney's.
    Renee M.

I haven't written a review in a long time, but Rodney's was so friggin good, I felt inspired to share so that no one sleeps on this place. We gave Rodney's a try while in Waterloo for a gymnastics meet, and I'm so glad we did. [[HIGHLIGHT]]This place doesn't look like anything super special when you first walk in, but I felt good seeing decks of playing cards on the tables, hearing the music (a vibey mix of hip hop, r&b, soul), and noticing that the wall decor was a mix of family photos.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] My husband got the brisket burger. The man at the counter (I'd like to assume it was Rodney himself) confirmed that was a solid choice. When it was my turn I asked the man if he preferred the steak Philly or the shrimp po'boy. He said shrimp po'boy so fast I knew that's what I had to go with. The food came out in good time, and my first thought was that the burger looked and smelled amazing, and the shrimp on my po'boy looked like this chef knew something a lot of restaurant don't--that shrimp should never ever ever under any circumstances be overcooked. I swear on my life these were the most perfectly executed shrimp I've had in years. They were huge, hot, juicy, ever so slightly battered in a savory mix of something. They had that *pop* that seems to elude a lot of restaurants. The roll it was served on was fresh and chewy, the lettuce and tomato were fresh, and they did the thinnest layer of mayo that was just enough to make it even more flavorful. The brisket burger was massive, piled with tons of juicy meat that was seasoned perfectly. This place knows how to do it. The fries that came with both baskets were also on point. All the stuff that dripped and fell out of that burger got swiped up with the fries, and we left absolutely nothing behind. Service was excellent, and we couldn't stop talking about this place all day. I wish we had a Rodney's in Des Moines. I probably won't have any reason to go back to Waterloo for a while, but at this point I'd make the drive just for another po'boy.

The ambiance is not great nothing grand to speak of but the was amazing hot fresh chicken. This place must be busy during the week because we were the only ones there on a Saturday afternoon. This place needs support

I went to a graduation in Cedar Falls, IA and stopped here on the way back home. This food was delicious and the owner was polite with fast service. [[HIGHLIGHT]]It's a nice little hole in the wall but a gem.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]Clean and welcoming.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'll definitely visit when I go back to IA. Check it out! No problem parking, fast, and delicious.

Rodney is the owner, operator, and chef. Everything is made to order--hot and fresh, quality ingredients. Shrimp po boy was outstanding. Order at the counter and food will be brought to you.

    Good home cooking

Great Food I Love this place! Owner is very friendly and [[HIGHLIGHT]]feels like home when you walk in the door[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]].

The flatbread is huge--at least two meals' worth--as are the salads. Beer's available in full pours, half pours, and flights, so it's easy to sample a few in one sitting. And don't miss the specials--especially inventive soups. There's plenty of seating options, too--a nice patio, bar stools, and a couple rooms full of tables and booths. Cheers!

There is ample space inside and out, and it's all very open and clean, though the inside dining areas are separated into large rooms, which I think would help with noise control when it's busy. We visited around 7:45 on a Friday evening in August and found it remarkably not crowded, but they have another location in Cedar Falls that probably draws a larger crowd. We were at the Waterloo location, which probably caters to a lot of business people and business travelers during the week. We ordered a lot of food for two people, and it was all excellent, but I rate this cool place four stars because all the food came out of the kitchen at once and we were totally overwhelmed. If it had been paced, I think we could have pulled it off, and as travelers, we couldn't really take leftovers with us to have another day. Our server was extremely helpful and patient helping me understand their beverage selections. I enjoy a good cocktail or a glass of good wine, but my beer tastes are even more limited, but SingleSpeed offered up the perfect solution: the SingleSpeed-a-rita. This is made with their Ring Around the Gose, tequila, agave, and lime juice. That hit the spot on a hot Friday night in Iowa!

I got the cevapi and my wife had the roasted chicken with potatoes and vegetables. Complementary beef and noodle soup came out which was delicious in the chilly morning. Not long after our orders came out with fresh baked bread and a Bosnian coleslaw type dish, both fantastic. Bread was soft and flavorful, coleslaw was crisp, refreshing and acidic which paired perfectly with our mains. The Cevapi were plentiful and cooked perfectly, still juicy, the bread soaked up all the juice. And the sauce was a house made sour cream and it goes really well with it. The roasted chicken was perfectly cooked, not overdone but still tender and juicy, and the vegetables went nicely with it. Nothing fancy, just very well done Bosnian home cooking. Can't wait to go back.

We sat there with no greeting, no water, nothing. We were actually about to leave and head to Culver's when the gentleman who seated us noticed we still hadn't been acknowledged. He immediately stepped in to help, got drinks started, apologized for the delay, and even offered us a complimentary appetizer because of the lack of service. The appetizer was great, and his kindness completely changed the tone of the experience. He ended up taking our order and delivering our food as well. His attentiveness and genuine care were superb. Unfortunately, the meal itself was disappointing. We usually order the Reuben but decided to try the 1850 chicken sandwich this time. It arrived barely warm, looked unappealing, and the chicken was quite dry. Honestly, I probably would have enjoyed Culver's more. That said, the gentleman who took care of us made all the difference. I wish I had gotten his name because he truly deserves recognition. I left nearly a 20% tip because of him and honestly wish I could have left more. You have an absolute gem working for you.
