We've ordered from Rohobot many times over the last year, always impressed. But recently, all our orders have been dry and either undercooked or overcooked in all the wrong ways. Tonight's tibs are tough and dry. The veggies are hard and dry. We hoped this was a one time occurrence a few weeks ago... We had to throw out our leftover because the yellow lentils had the texture of dried out corn. The beets are hard. This is the second or third time of significantly disappointing food. Due to high reviews my wife decided to give this authentic Ethiopian restaurant a try. It is brightly lit in a row of mainly Ethiopian storefronts just off Georgia Ave. There are a few tables with comfortable chairs. As we dined there was a steady stream of carryout customers. We ordered a large sampler platter. and one other entree. This would be enough for a family of 4. My favorite was the steak tartare which was nicely spiced. I have never experienced collard greens with so much flavor. We ended up taking the extra entree home. The tea had spices in it and came with a black tea bag to strengthen it. Add your own sugar. Our party had a member with celiac disease, and the owner was incredibly cautious in preparing the food to ensure no cross-contamination with our gluten-free injera. Last night was the second time I ordered the Yawaze Tibs for dinner. So delicious. The awaze paste/sauce included is very rich and tastes unique. The injera is soft and perfect. Everything about this simple dish was satisfying. I would not recommend the vegetarian combo, unfortunately, which I ordered as well. Was deciding between Nile and Rohobot so I flipped a coin. Rohobot it is! Nothing fancy but I was alone and I really don't care about that. Hole in the wall is just my speed. I ordered a tea ($1.50) and the 50/50 ($12.99) which comes with Kitfo and Lega Tibs. I also asked to replace the tomato salad with Misir Wat (spicy red lentils) and the kind lady gladly obliged. The tea was great! I got the Kitfo raw just to do it "right" but will probably stick to a medium rare next time. The flavor was outstanding, especially dipped in the awaze (spicy paste) and mit mita (salt and spice powder) that comes on every dish. The lega tibs were a little OVER cooked for my taste, but were also delicious. Packed half to-go and left it on the table. Classic. A younger gentleman came out and whistled after me to bring the food! Top-notch. Excellent value and genuine hospitality. The nice proprietor also enjoyed that I knew a little Amharic. The veggie combo is full of all the different lentils, salads, and veggies you'd expect. The give you large heaping piles of injera. The salad and beets have a great note of vinegar. It's not the fanciest establishment in terms of aesthetics, but the quality of the food more than makes up for it. The owners are also extremely pleasant.
