My tenant called them while I was in the hospital, trying to be proactive for a clogged garbage disposal. My tenant then approved them to clean our garbage disposal. They charged us $383 for a cleaning. This was done without my knowledge or I would have told them where to go. That price is disgusting and they should be ashamed to do business like that. Fool me once. We will never hire them again and I will tell everyone I know to call literally anyone else before them. If they were the last business on earth and my heat went out, I guess I would freeze. Do better. read more

longtime customer. Our furnace, a/c unit, hot water heater, recent plumbing repairs - all completed with Service Experts. They performed our furnace inspection back in August and left saying all looked good. I called shortly thereafter and asked where the report cards were, and they were then shared with me. To my surprise, both of them showed a yellow rating. I then received an email about a week later asking me if I was ready to accept the estimate and proceed with the work. I had no idea what they were talking about. I called and was told it was for a new igniter. I called back and asked if any of the pictures shared was the igniter. Also, what was the specific concern with the other yellow rating. I was promised a call back which was never received. After waiting a few days, I reached out to them through the BBB. I also submitted a complaint through their resolution email with all the information they asked for. Once again, no response. It is sad that the service level of this company has decreased to this level. I was leaning towards having the work done (about $450). Apparently, that doesn't matter to them. My wife and I are now leaning towards discontinuing our maintenance agreement with them. There has been issues before and this is just the latest. I certainly hope this igniter doesn't fail in January, and we suffer the consequences of their inaction. read more

The service was abysmal. I will tell the story of service master/ Roland j downs plumbers who were hired to clean drains and left water running and an open u bend to my septic tank as often as I can. I can't win with this place. I got a call about are yearly service on the furnace, mind you they just did the Heat pump service/ are thermostat was not working. Tech comes out to check thermostat issue and is not sure why it is not working but said he will order a new one( this would be are third thermostat in 6 years). I get a call telling me the Tech will come out and do are winter service in June and replace the thermostat. They no-showed me twice, after receiving the text and call that tech is on his way. Got no/showed twice. I got another call about the thermostat and the winter service being done. Tech shows up, knows nothing about the thermostat but is here for the winter service( mind you I have been using vacation time for all these no-show appts) Adam the tech went to the basement to start working. After a few I can hear him having a spirited conversation with someone. One hour later he comes upstairs to tell me he cannot service are furnace because the previous tech from last year stripped some sorta nozzle and put equipment in, incorrectly. Which makes sense because the house smelled like oil for a day or two. A week ago I get a call about coming out to replace and fix what was broken last year. I ask for Adam the tech that went into detail with me about what all was done wrong. I asked the phone rep for Adam since he seems to know what he is doing. I'm told she will check his schedule and get back with you. Fast forward to today, I get a call that the tech is in his way, I am at work and the wife is a teacher, off for the summer, she is shopping and about 30 minutes away from the house. I ask the phone rep can I call you back to make sure the wife can get home. I'll call the number I was told to call and go to a phone center, which is of no help. I have four more years on this contract and will not do business with Roland J Down. The reason I used them was a family recommendation. read more

Everyone we've encountered is friendly, scheduling is easy and the price is good for the high quality you get. We purchased a furnace and an AC unit in Nov 2025. We were told that we would receive a $600 rebate and that they (Roland J Down) would handle all of the rebate paperwork for National Grid. It is now June 2026 and several (15+) phone calls later we have received no call backs and no rebate. we even spoke to the Resolution Dept and they said all that they could do was forward the complaint to a manager. Do not deal with this company. My son had them install a new furnace while I was in the hospital. The unit either does not work properly or it is undersized. Ran it for 24 hours this past January and it would not bring the temp up above 69 degrees. $8500.00 down the drain. The pipes froze while the heat was out. They said they would be there in 45 minutes and showed up three days later. Called other plumbers in the area and when asked for zip code they all connected to Rolan J Downs. When the guy finally showed up he said he only had 6 fittings.what kind of plumber shows to a job with four fittings? He waisted two of them connecting a 12 inch piece of plastic pipe to pex. I said he didn't need those fittings he could use shark bite fittings and he had no idea what I was talking about. He waas there for 8 hours and only able to connect the toilet and charged $800.00. DO NOT use this company, they will sell your service off to "the advantage program". They are extremely unhelpful. I have been trying to switch a water softening system into my name (after I purchased a house) back in June, it's now February and the problem is still not fixed. Now if I want to cancel the system completely I will have to pay $7500 to end the contract..... a contract that I never signed, the original owner of the house who had the system installed are the only signatures on the contract. Highly recommend to anyone that is purchasing a home with any equipment owned or serviced by RJD to terminate the service before you buy the house, otherwise there going to charge a crazy amount to get out of a contract that you didn't agree too. read more

This company has a yearly maintenance contract to service my 84-year-old mother's air conditioner. They try to rip her off every time they show up. They just tried to charge her $300 to replace a UV bulb, which is literally just changing a lightbulb - a $45 part and 90 seconds of work. When she asked why it cost $300 they told her that's just what it costs and she could just take it or leave it. What kind of psychopaths could treat someone that way? I saw in their ad a special on drain cleaning. It said to call for details and I did. After being told that the cleaning of one drain would cost $99, I booked it. I was never told that it cost twice as much because $99 would be charged to diagnose the problem. When the plumber got here he told me I had to pay the $99 diagnostic fee. Nothing needed to be diagnosed. Only the kitchen sink drain was plugged up. No other drain. I didn't want a diagnosis, nor did I get one. He still charged me $198 plus tax. The coupon price in the ad is misstated. I called to complain and was told by the same person I booked through that a manager would call me back. No one has returned my calls. BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY. If I could give zero stars I would! My boiler had gone out due to an aquastat malfunction. This company is who previously put this part in 4 years ago. They came to look at my boiler, first they didn't know it was a boiler, they thought it was a furnace. Second, they tried telling me that my circulator pump was bad because it was warm to the touch! This part is supposed to be warm because it's circulating warm water. The big one, they purposely tampered with my good boiler so I would have to call them back out and fix that one as well! They over charge you for work and parts! Telling me it would cost me 1,300 for a AquaStat relay! All other companies are charging 500.00-650.00! They are crooks and a scam. I would never use them again and I'd advise anyone who is looking to keep on looking. I'd recommend using Family Danz! They are very professional and fair. read more

My wife and I have been customers of Roland J Down Service Experts (Clifton Park, NY) for many years, having purchased a total of two new furnaces and A/C units from them, one not that long ago. We have always had a maintenance contract with them for our equipment which we were told provided priority service. We had an issue which I could not identify at first, and was quite worried about, involving our gas-hot air furnace. When placing a service call on Saturday (expecting both "guaranteed priority service" and a "lightning fast response", these terms being used on their website) I was given an appointment 4 days from now! This is not the service response time I expected from this company especially with the maintenance plan I pay for. If this was a lack of heat issue during the winter, the ramifications could have been quite severe. I investigated the issue with the furnace more fully and was able to correct it myself, thankfully. We had sent them two emails regarding this issue and have received no response. This rating is for the incredible long response time as a "priority" customer, as well as ignoring two emails. read more

Well another fiasco from this company. They are beyond incompetent - at least the billing department is. We signed up for their maintenance program. We signed up to have the monthly charges taken from a credit card. One would expect this to be a simple seamless situation. Came the start month - they did not start the program. I called them and they admitted they screwed up and I had them charge my credit card on file. The next month the system worked ok and my credit card was automatically billed. Today in the mail I received a past due notice for the 2 months referenced above. It is not wise to aggravate a good customer. Last year we spent $8000 with them on a new furnace. We are sick of ongoing billing issues- as described in this review as well as my earlier one. They are one of the most incompetent companies I have ever dealt with. I just put it in writing that they were already paid from my credit card for the time period they claim I am past due (and I verified that my credit card was charged). I advised them one more screw up and I will cancel my maintenance program with them and find a real company to deal with. read more

I purchased a new HVAC system from Roland J Down 6 months ago (May 2024). At the time I read reviews on the Lennox "Smart" thermostat and my sales rep told me the device is very reliable. Now that I need heat, I have discovered how WRONG he was and how correct the reviews were. The thermostat has a mind of its own. A few weeks ago, it was randomly selecting Heat/Cool mode. That seems to have stopped but it now randomly selects temperatures outside the schedule settings. At other times, my house feels cold prompting me to check the thermostat and finding it is in a reboot mode showing the Lennox logo and a spinning wait symbol. I contacted RJD for service and was advised the charge would be $84.50. So much for them honoring the one-year warranty. And BTW, Lennox shows a 10-year warranty on this thermostat. read more

I'm not sure why there is a low rating for RJD heating & Cooling. In the beginning of September when heat was at a high, our A/C went out. We called our regular contractor company and they said they would be out the next day. By noon I decided to call and they said that they "Might be able to come in a few days". So much for a service contract! When I told them forget it, all of a sudden they said there was a misunderstanding and they would be out that day. Too little too late, sorry but we are going with a different company. This is a major local company in the capital district. We decided to call a different company and chose Roland J Down. The service technician was at our home the next day and went right to work. Unfortunately our system bit the dust, water from the coils dripped on the main control board. The system was 18 years old and the cooling portion was over 25 years old. We decided that it's time to replace it. At the same time our apartment system was leaking also, so the thing to do is replace both. This was on a Friday that we decided to get this major repair. On Wednesday the installation team was here and replaced the apartment system and Thursday the house system. Anywhere between three to four technicians did the installation and in an extremely professional manner. We are extremely grateful and satisfied that we were able to choose Roland J Down to do this work. read more

We reached out for furnace repair two weeks ago and they arrived promptly. We were told we needed a new control panel which would take a week to ship. We waited the week (with a couple nights in the 30s) and they came for install once the part was in. After many hours, it was determined that the issue was due to a bee hive in the duct. They then stated we still needed a new control panel and left the new panel hooked up. That evening we were unable to turn our heat off so we called back and someone came out the following day. After many more hours, he informed us that we didn't actually need a new control panel but that it was just the bee hive all along. He hooked back up our original motherboard but then left us the new one in box stating he cannot take it with him but someone would be reaching out to refund it. This was two weeks ago. We have called four times without response. We still have the part and were unable to get a refund. I posted this review on Google and recieved a response right away but I am still unable to reach anyone by phone. The issue has not been resolved. Customer service is horrible. Overall Roland J. Down was money well spent. They installed and maintain our furnace. If there has been any issues they respond immediately. Very impressive response time. charged me $410 to replace an igniter. A very simple job I would have done myself if I could find the part online.

We've been customers for years and their service has always been pretty good. However, while doing some price shopping I've learned that their fees are way over the top. For instance, a quote to install two mini-splits was $7K higher than the next two estimates I received. To install a new tankless water heater they were $2.5K higher than what my propane company did the job for. While servicing my AC they told me I should replace the capacitor in the unit, and charged me over $200 for a capacitor! A replacement thermostat for the Lennox heating and cooling was quoted at over $1500. I highly recommend that you get other quotes before using this company. read more

Roland J. Down used to be the best in the business. But, as usual, since it was sold, it is pathetic. I paid 7k for a new furnace that hasn't worked properly since it was installed! Last 3 techs have told me they are baffled! Problem is still ongoing. No resolve (or offer of new furnace in site! If things change I will rewrite my review but I honestly don't see that happening. Roland J. Down Management doesn't care about it's customers....I am frustrated with the company and have no other recourse but to vent here. I have a new house (7 years old) and have been an RJD customer for 7 years. I have a service contract with them. In January, I had a problem of regulating the heat. The house would get too hot and the furnace would shut off and wouldn't go back on till the house was too cold. A Salesman came with the tech on the service call and told me that the furnace was not installed correctly because it didn't have an air intake chamber in the bottom and that the furnace would burn itself out in a couple of years. He suggested I replace the entire furnace for a sum of $10,000+. The salesman also said I would get $1,000 energy rebate from National Grid. I decided to divert future heating problems and go with the new furnace. I asked if I had to apply for the rebate. The salesman said that he would submit the application for me and RJD would keep track of the rebate until I got paid.....I didn't have to worry!!! He said it would take about 2 months to receive the rebate check. Then, all of sudden, the salesman was no longer working for RJD....and he never submitted the rebate application to National Grid. Two months passed so when I inquired about the rebate, neither RJD or NG knew anything about the application. I was able to resubmit the application but the rebate was only $600.00, the additional $400.00 was a January incentive that expired. I have been calling every few days trying to get someone in management to return my calls and see if I can recover the $400.00. I have been getting the run-around...."the service manager is in the field and will call you back"....they have totally ignored me...just blew me me off....now, it isn't about the money as it is about not having the decency to respond to a customer and address the customer's complaint. Beware if you are dealing with RJD, the service people seem to be competent but the management is just out for the money and just doesn't care about the customer. read more

Michael Alvarado came to our home today to replace the 3rd lavatory sink leaking faucet in less than a year. I guess a 17 year old home is going to need some maintenance. He did an excellent job, gave me a few pointers, was courteous and respectfully responded to my questions. His manager Grant worked with me as well given I've been a customer of theirs since purchasing this home. Roland J. Down's annual service plan is beyond comforting knowing that your heating equipment & hot water heater are ready for winter and your air conditioning system is ready for summer. And if anything should go wrong in between servicing, the significant discounts on parts and labor and place in line for service should you need it are a high point of the plans as well. I recommend the annual service plans highly and will continue renewing my service plans annually! You should too!! read more

For my friends who live in Upstate NY, do NOT use Roland J Down for servicing your heating equipment. My wife called them at 9 AM yesterday to request emergency service, which we pay for and their technician finally called that they were "25 minutes away) at 11:30 PM. By that point I have already returned home and fixed the issue. Why am I paying for emergency service? Why is it we are always at the end of the list when we call for emergency service? Why do we have to wait for over 8 hours for emergency service? It's because Roland J Down does NOT carry if their customers are without heat in the winter. This isn't the first time we've had issues with them, but it will be the last as we will not be using them going forward. When you lose heat because their technician wired a zone control value wrong and then a second couldn't figure it out, then 3 days later a different technician arrives to replace the just replaced zone control value finds it's been wired wrong. So, no heat or hot water for over 4 days because they hire incompetent people. Over 4 days! Thankfully it wasn't really cold, but no hot water for over 4 days. That's when I should have told them to go away forever, but we gave them another chance and this is the result. read more

I had written about this company 2 years prior and gave them a great review, they were good to me 2 years ago...that's why I called them back here. This time not good at all. The man who came to my home, on time, which was nice...raked me over the coals. He put 8 lbs. of Refrigerant in to my a/c unit with florescent leak dye. $$1,300.00 ......said he could see where the line was leaking once it ran out, well it ran out in less than 48 hours...I MUST HAVE A LEAK THEN RIGHT???? WHERE?? HOW CAN YOU SEE IT NOW, IT ALL LEAKED OUT???!!! A gentleman from Albany Mechanical will now be helping me out. He said the technician from RJ Downs should not have put refrigerant in unless he was willing to stay and see or hear from where the line was leaking. You cannot tell after the fact. So I just wasted $1,300.00, literally into thin air. UNREAL!! And I was informed that RJ Downs charged WAAAYYY too much for R410a. Sad really, makes me sad. You have technicians come into your home to help you. I am just a home owner, I have no idea about A/C units, my mistake I guess. Shame on them..... read more

We have been with ROLAND J. DOWNS for at least 15 years. They have consistently provided immediate and effective service. The best thing about them is that when you need them, they are there immediately, and the people that they send are knowledgeable, courteous, and efficient. Our air conditioning developed a problem the other evening, which they had solved by noon the next day. They also take the time to explain the problem in a way that you can understand. In this case, they told us that the problem was simple and easily fixed. There was no charge for their service. read more

In order to bring my basic toilet installation down to $750 I bought into their maintenance program. Ive scheduled my furnace check up twice (each time a month in advance). The first time they called me on the morning of my appointment and told me they had to cancel. Then they called me three days before my appointment to cancel again. We have currently been without a working furnace for 6 weeks. Our blower motor died and we were without central air during the heat wave and now cannot use the furnace. Every week they say we will contact you, no one contacts is back and they have been extremely unresponsive and unhelpful and we are part of their service contract plan for the last 20 years . If I could give them a 0 star I would. I have literally never had such a poor experience and have never written a bad review for a company before. They put in a new system for us last year that we needed to finance. We are a large family so needed the 10 year loan for the lower payment in such a hard economy. They mislead us and signed us up for the 5 year loan. Told us they were going to fix it. They gave us the run around for an entire year with us trying to give them the benefit of the doubt with them assuring us they were going to fix it. Even coming to our house to discuss issues and fixing it. They weren't sure but it was suggested to not make a payment until the new loan went through. Well lesson unfortunately learned! The bank was going along with the change; went as far as Roland j Down just needed to approve the switch to a 10 year loan with absolutely no effect to them which they did not do. Well now Roland J Down is refusing to correct their mistake and we are left with a bank contract that is now in collections with a large back payment on top of the normal payment and poor credit. Also never got our national grid rebate that was promised which could help us with this whole mess. What a scam! They should be ashamed. For average people, Save yourself the hassle and stay very far away from Roland J Down. Very poor experience. read more

A Roland down technician told me that the previous "Roland down expert reversed the wires on my unit causing the motor to be damaged. On advice of his boss, he didn't charge me and said his manager would call me on Monday to spell out a course of action. That was 13 Mondays ago! I made 4 calls to their offices and got 4 promises. Scammers, straight up. Our A/C died a few years ago and my wife got conned into their "Advantage loyalty program". We pay ~135 a month and they've serviced the unit once in 5 years. Trying to get the payoff amount now that we're moving has been a nightmare. Apparently billing doesn't handle billing, the Loyalty department does, which doesn't have a contact number anywhere and only has an answering machine you get to leave a message on and wait 48 hours for a response. We got the payoff amount a few months ago, after days of waiting and hours on the phone, only to find out that after 5 years we still owe the price of the unit if we bought it outright. These people are worse than the old Sears credit card. Stay FAR away. read more

Chris and Jorge arrived early to install a new Lennox furnace and air conditioning unit. They were professional , knowledgeable and explained everything they were doing. They performed high quality work and exceeded my expectations. Chris and Jorge worked tirelessly for the entire day until the job was completed and tested to make sure the heat and AC were both working properly. Before they left they cleaned up the areas they had been working in showing respect for my home. Roland J Down was very responsive when I needed them and provided outstanding customer service. Highly recommend them and you won't get better technicians than Chris and Jorge. They clearly know what they are doing! read more

I have a two zone forced air heat and ac system. Probably used for about 2/3 of its lifespan. Everything was working fine and I had them come for a "Precision Tune-Up" in December '22 to keep the system working well. 60 days later the unit stops working. I had them come back. They charged me a service visit fee and gave me very high price quotes for a new unit (over $10,000) or to replace the inducer motor ($909) and they did not honor the offer on the Precision Tune-Up promo card, "If your system breaks down within 90 days of our service, we guarantee your money back." This reeks of sabotage. I recommend to stay away from this company. After the tech left, I reopened the furnace, let the inducer motor cool down. After 15 minutes, I restarted the furnace, spun the inducer motor by hand until it took and starting spinning on its own. Now working. Will it fail again soon? Maybe so or maybe not. I will see after it cycles off and back on again. In any case, if I, an amateur, could get the furnace started with help from a youtube tutorial, perhaps the tech should have done so also. read more
