Not unlike many, their story started with a food truck. Now they have a solid non-moving roof over their heads and continue serving the masses. They've only been opened a few months and the word is spreading! Not far from UAB and UAB St Vincent hospital on 6th Ave South, parking can be a bit of a challenge for lunch, but there's street parking during dinner. There's really no seating outside unless you want to pop a squat in the back where they're boiling the crawfish on Fridays and Saturdays. We visited on a Friday night and they had two guitar players singing and playing their guitars on stage. There's a small fish tank with of course a "blue" crawfish or was it from the lighting?!? And a larger tank but this one had Buelah the giant bull frog! No there wasn't any frog legs on their menu! Oh I can't forget the cool map of the USA at the front where you can put a pin where you're from. There were lots of pins in Louisiana and I suspect that map will have many more pins in the months to come. As I mentioned during crawfish season, they are currently boiling crawfish every Fri and Saturday with market prices. This night it was $11 for a pound of crawfish with corn and potatoes. I boil a lot of crawfish myself so I can be critical. Their crawfish were large, but they could've been more seasoned meaning they could use a little more seasoning mix and soak them longer. But hey, that's my personal preference. You should try it yourself and form your own opinion. Here's what else our 6 top tried... Voodoo Boudin balls: 6 beautifully presented boudin balls drizzled with sauce and sprinkled with green onions. Stuffed with the added pepper jack cheese, Yom Yom Yom. Jambalaya: Nice color, andouille, green onion sausage, tasso, pork loin and chicken slow cook, nice color... delicious Yom Yom Chicken & Sausage gumbo: Andouille sasusage, chicken in a beautiful dark roux served with a scoop of rice in the center, this gumbo is how you do it. Yom Yom Yom Yom! Alligator sauce piquant: My first time and I have nothing to compare it to. Pieces of gator simmered in a spicy tomato based roux. The tomato roux wasn't my favorite and I thought the rice was a tad under cooked. Crawfish Etouffee: I love etouffee and there are a few different variations. This variation was not my favorite, but it is more than acceptable. Plenty of crawfish tails and beautiful color garnished with green onions. Muffaletta: A cajun classic with classic meats with lots of olives, in the right kind of bread. This received my wife's seal of approval and that's saying a lot! Yom Yom Yom Yom! Mac & Cheese side: on par Dirty cabbage: slow cooked with andouille sausage and seasoned just right, I really enjoyed this side Yom Yom Yom Coleslaw: Like their menu says, it's cool, crisp and lightly dressed. Yom Yom Yom. Sweet potato gratin: Thin slices of sweet potatoes baked tender with brie, mozzarella and provolone, Yom Yom Yom Yom! Our server was attentive. I loved how they laid out the interior. The stage, the tall ceilings, the bar, and the tvs. The center big open space has all the tables and chairs setup. I understand now how those tables can be moved to show a nice dance floor in front of the stage. Cajun dancing anyone?!? Does Birmingham need another cajun restaurant? I won't dignify that ridiculous question with an answer! I can't wait to go back and try their shrimp poboy! read more

Why try one thing when you can try it all?? We studied the menu and could not decide because everything looked SO GOOD. So we got the platter with nearly everything! My favorites were definitely the crawfish étouffée, the jambalaya, and the spinach artichoke egg rolls, and my husband's favorites were the yard bird egg rolls and the boudin balls... Basically everything on the plate was a favorite! Great atmosphere, live music, fun place to be. Visited on a Friday at lunch. Wanted to try everything. Lunch menu is a bit confusing but the are still working out the menu. We had boudin egg roll, half link of voo doo boudin and jambalaya. Also tried the dirty cabbage. I loved the cabbage. Yes its boiled cabbage but with seasoning and sausage. Its really good. Go ahead and try it. Jambalaya was good, not too spicy, with chunks of chicken and sausage. Egg roll had chicken boudin in it and it was the best thing on my plate. The voo doo boudin was good. Amazing find at the North Pole Expo in Trussville , Alabama. The owner let me try a sample of the Spinach Articheaux, this had good flavor from the spinach and a nice crunch. I decided on the Jamblaya. The dish had it all, great flavor, rich base and just the right amount of heat to keep the proteins as the star. I also indulged on a piece of Southern Kin Cheesecake. Smooth and not too sweet this dessert was an additional hit. I think they might be opening a brick and mortar in Birmingham. If im ever back in the area, I will find Roll Cajun Boudin. read more

Another Veteran and I stopped in for a catchup lunch. Lo and behold, behold and lo, we were there for a couple of hours catching up. The vibe was welcoming, fun and perfect for a family, friends or a business meetup. The menu was small but considering they had only been open for a couple of weeks, it was acceptable. My salad was good but the deliciousness of the sweet potatoes was so so good. It's like a sweet potato cobbler with just the right amount of sugar basted in butter. My friend ordered the gumbo and she loved it! The service was great. We received the right amount of attention. This place is just comfortable and relaxing. Aside from them not having their liquor license, this was a cool experience. I popped by on a Friday evening to grab some crawfish. They were offering a pound for 9.50!! Insane , right!!! I had two pounds to go and they were delicious. With corn and potatoes. Whew!!! I could have literally eaten 5 lbs. Service was a little slow but extend grace since they are new. Visited the food truck at a recent Barons game. I'm so glad I did! Both ladies working were extremely friendly, remembered me from when i stopped and looked at the menu earlier, and were incredibly fast with my order. Food was excellent- warm, good portion size, full of authentic flavor. The jambalaya was a little wetter than I'm accustomed, but was full of meat and spice. Would visit again! I was at UAB for a 7 on 7 tournament and I was really hungry. I noticed this food truck so I decided to give them a chance. The prices are a tad bit higher than other food trucks I frequent, but the food was delicious. It also didn't take forever for the food to be ready. My husband and I tried the jambalaya. It had a slight kick to it, which I really liked. The portion was very filling. I'm sorry that I do not have a picture of the food because I was too hungry to pause and snap one. I have been wanting to try this food truck for a while and finally the location schedule matched up with mine. I went with the Voodoo Boudin Balls and they were AMAZING! The 3 balls that come with the order were larger than any others I have had, were well cooked throughout and the sauce on top was great. There was a little kick but it was not too much. In every other instance that I have had boudin balls, it has been as an appetizer or accompaniment to my meal. In this case the serving size was large enough that it was enough to fill me up for lunch. There was very little wait after ordering before they were ready and these without question were the best boudin balls I have ever had! My wife and I regularly choose Cajun or Creole food when we dine out and despite having some quite good options before none have really come close. I was very tempted to get a 2nd order to take home but managed to resist because I am trying to watch what I eat more than I used to. Regardless I will be checking the schedule regularly for the next time that the food truck will be close enough for lunch (hopefully it will be more often). read more

Went to the storefront grand opening today and had a great time! They had live music going and a great crowd! The food was fantastic! Tried the boudin, gumbo, egg rolls, jambalaya, and the bisque! Once again, I had an incredible experience at Roll Cajun Boudin. This authentic Cajun food is made with love and so flavorful and fresh. They put intention into every bite and truly care about their product and the costumer experience. You should not only eat here because the food is incredible (especially the crawfish bisque and jambalaya), but because the staff and owner are so caring and kind. When I told the owner about a charitable fundraiser I am organizing, he generously donated a gift card and t-shirts. He also took the time to get to get to know the customers at the food truck event at Siluria and even personally delivered the food to us inside while the food truck was outside, even though it was busy. As someone from Louisiana, finding food that actually tastes like home while I'm in Birmingham is not easy. I miss it all the time, so I'm picky when it comes to Cajun food. That being said, Roll Cajun Boudin Truck seriously delivers. Their jambalaya, gumbo, and especially the boudin balls are all so good. Everything is seasoned the way it should be and doesn't feel like a watered down version of Louisiana food. It actually reminds me of home, which is rare to find here. On top of that, the owner and team are amazing. They're welcoming, passionate, and you can tell they care about what they're serving. They even hosted an event I was a part of a few weeks ago, and the food there was just as great. Yesterday i tried Roll Cajun Boudin. I had never been and was assuming it was maybe similar to Papadeaux or something like that. It was opposite than that and was not fancy but I appreciated that. It is a great place to go when you just want good food without all the extra stuff and it is a place you can go without having to dress up or anything. I decided to get the boudin balls and they were absolutely amazing. They were crispy on the outside but soft and full of flavor on the inside. It was not greasy or anything either which I appreciated. I also appreciated that the food was well seasoned instead of just being really salty. The food is definitely filling and heavy though, I must say, but that is kind of the theme and point of southern cuisine in my opinion. My friend and I tried Roll Cajun Boudin for the first time yesterday, and we went all in with the Grand Boudin Man's Feast. Honestly, there wasn't a single thing we didn't thoroughly enjoy. It was incredible from start to finish. Every bite delivered bold, authentic flavor, and the portions were more than generous. The service was just as great as the food. We had the chance to meet Matt, the owner, and he's as real as they come. An awesome, good old Cajun guy who's clearly passionate about what he does. My husband and our baby came tonight for the first time, and unfortunately it was a huge letdown. We were seated pretty quickly after we walked in, but about 10 minutes after we sat down our waiter and the owner came to our table asking if we could move to a table next to the stage to accommodate a group of 14 that just walked in. We were a little hesitant as we had our baby with us and the live music was about to start, but the owner was so nice and offered to knock 10% off our tab for moving. Our waiter seated us at our new table and said he'd be right back to take our order. 20 minutes went by before he returned to even take our drink order. The table of 14 who came in after us had their drinks ordered before our waiter returned. When our waiter finally did come back, we went ahead and ordered our drinks, along with the boudin egg rolls, and 4lbs of crawfish. The boudin rolls came first and they were amazing. The first two pounds of crawfish came shortly after, but we still didn't have the two beers we ordered. Another 10 minutes went by and we finally got our beers, but no water. I wasn't too surprised though, because the girl behind the bar was also waiting tables and running food. Every staff member looked in over their heads. I'm from the Mobile area, and I am a big lover of crawfish, and I know what good crawfish tastes like. The crawfish we were served was overcooked and waaaay too salty. It tastes like they just boiled the crawfish in a bunch of Swamp Dust seasoning and then poured melted butter on top and called it a day. There was no depth of flavor, just salt, which was unfortunate because we still didn't have our waters. We also only had one napkin between the two of us and had to grab a bucket for shells from another table because we didn't see our waiter again for about 40 minutes after we were served. Our next two pounds of crawfish took another 30 minutes to come out. The restaurant itself was nice and clean and the live music was good, but it seems like they are severely understaffed and the crawfish tasted like a New Yorker made it. read more
