All I could think about was a foot-long from the Dog House. After a great cruise and a stop at the museum at Dover Air force base I made it to New Castle. Making the merge onto RT13 I could the sign ahead of me. Parking can be tough but there was spot out front. I did notice the sign has changed, again. My father had been taking me here since 1969. It was our place to go on our Saturday trips from Jersey since it is a sales tax free state. After walking in I couldn't help notice how the inside had changed (last time here was 2021). If you think it has a nostalgic feel now, you have seen it in the '80s and '90s. They have taken down all the hand painted signage and replaced the menu board with a modern one, dang. I just hope they don't plan on franchising the place. I managed to grab a seat at the counter and in no time I was placing my order. All in all, the food is still done the same. Dogs split and grilled on the flat top and the fries are great with their own signature seasoning. I had a hot sausage with pepper hash and coleslaw. It had a snappy skin, decent heat and was delicious when paired with the sweet coleslaw and pepper hash. My friend ordered frank and tots and reported it to be delicious and filling. My son had a regular dog and we all shared a big pretzel with beer cheese. I had an IPA named Thank Frank that was about average for a West Coast style IPA and my pal had a couple of their darker offerings that he wasn't impressed with. Our server was nice and gave a great recommendation to add the pepper hash. She wasn't the fastest at coming to check on our beers so we bailed. Apparently this is where they come on Fridays, to repair themselves while they repair the city. It explained everything. Service was swift and attentive, a minor miracle given the crowd. I began with a Scotch egg, an item that seemed to have wandered in from another story entirely. I ordered it for that reason. I had always imagined my first Scotch egg would be eaten in an English pub under low ceilings and older regrets. Instead, here it was. Perfectly crisp, warm, and generous. The universe does not ask for permission. Then came the main event. The menu is an atlas of hot dogs. Domestic. International. Proteins in tube form arranged like possibilities. There is even an invitation to build your own, which I accepted. I attempted to recreate a favorite from Crif Dogs, a thing called the Spicy Redneck. Bacon wrapped dog. Pickled jalapenos. Coleslaw. Simple in theory. Destination Dogs improved upon it in every way that matters. The bacon crisped with purpose. The jalapenos spoke clearly. The coleslaw behaved. The hot dog itself seemed proud to be there. All of this, plus a 16 ounce beer, cost me about twenty five dollars with tip. A small price for order in a chaotic universe. Five stars.
