A while back, I was helping a friend move into a house about a block away from Rolling Bay Auto when one of the moving trucks refused to turn on. I tried every trick I could think of, but it wouldn't turn over and the steering column was locked. I was also very inconveniently parked somewhere I couldn't stay and had no way of contacting the property owner, so I started to panic a little. I called Rolling Bay and they not only sent a tech out right away to fix the problem/troubleshoot, but because it was a very simple solution they refused to charge me. Do not bring your car to Rolling Bay Auto. I can't believe their yelp rating. I spent $1000 getting my drivable car 'fixed' and two weeks later, it wouldn't start at all. They refused to take responsibility for their work and I ended up having my car towed to another repair shop that actually fixed my car. Do not go here. Quotes are completing laid out and totally understandable. They have drop off service back to your home or work which is a big plus. They looked at my car, told me the issues, explained to me that it might be a warranty repair and that I should contact auto maker and see if I could get it covered, even though that meant they would not get the job, I would have to take it to the dealer. From my experience, I would not recommend anyone to do business with this company. Here are the reasons why: I took my car to rolling bay because my battery wasn't charging, and they told me that it needed a new alternator and it would have to be a factory alternator and they were going to charge me over $600. I thought it was a little high so I had someone else look at it and all it was, was a $2 fuse. The second reason was that I was having trouble with the brakes on my vehicle and after they investigated they told me it would cost $2800 to fix the breaks. And again, after some investigation it was just a bad caliper on the left rear wheel. I would never again bring my vehicle to them. That was just my experience. read more

The shop is in my neighborhood so I thought I'd be a good neighbor and support them. Three years ago I had purchased 4 tires and had alignment done by them. They did a good job but after having my car all day and telling me my car was ready at 4PM, I walked the mile to their shop only to discover they "forgot" to do the alignment. Their service writer was not apologetic in the least and suggested that I come back the next day. The alignment tech had to stay late to finish the job that evening. I went away greatful to the tech and quite annoyed with the service writer and whoever runs the place. I vowed to never to go back. This week I needed to have another alignment done on short notice as I had travel plans and a tight schedule. I'd noticed that the shop had been completely remodeled in the last year and so I foolishly thought I'd give them another chance. They seemed prosperous in our relatively small island town so they must be OK, right? Perhaps my first experiance was unusual... NOPE! The quality of their current work has yet to be revealed but I'll never go back because of their "doing you a favor" attitude and rediculously high rate for a simple two wheel alignment. The service writers were not friendly but the tech I spoke with was polite and very knowledgable. When I picked my car up and paid the absurd bill, I didn't even get a smile or a "thank you". I found my car parked across the street, unlocked and backed into 2 inches of mud and grass. Thanks guys, I get the message. My partner takes her $porty car to the dealer in Bellevue for service. They are expensive but at least they know what customer service is! I gave Rolling Bay Automotive a second chance but they won't get a third. This place is a rip off. I'd heard that from several people, but due to a unplanned trip to Oregon and the need for a quick oil change prior I called and made a appointment to have the oil changed. I was quoted $50 over the phone, which is awfully expensive for that, but I figured I'd pay the inflated rate based on my immediate need and not worry about it. They did the work quickly, which is great. However, when I picked the car up my bill was $64 rather than $50. WA sales tax is $4 of that difference, but when I asked the guy at the counter where the rest of the charge was from he said "supplies" (oil?). Dude, if it costs $60, tell me that when I call. I never change my want oil due to the disposal hassle, but I've never had it done where the oil and filter weren't part of the fee. I wish I knew enough to maintain my own automobile, but since I don't, I must rely on others. For the past ten years I've counted on Ranji at Rolling Bay Automotive. Now that I have a newer Prius, Plug-in, I needed to do some shopping around. Mandy was cheerful and competently articulated the required checks to maintain the Prius warranty. Yes, she was abundantly familiar with the 0W-20 oil and the change interval of every 10,000 miles. She recommended the 6K maintenance check. The work was completed early in time for me to make my appointments, which I appreciated. While I waited, I noticed that Mandy confidently processed orders for parts with various auto part shops, worked with drop-in customers, and still handled phone calls, without getting the least bit frazzled. I had to bring my vehicle in twice for the same repair which was mis-diagnosed the first time. I felt the charges were on the high side, probably on par with a dealer which usually is more expensive than a independant shop. Not so in this case... On the plus side, the second repair was effective and the vehicle is still running properly a few months after the repair. My advice is to use these guys only if money is not a big concern for you. They seem to cater to a class of people who have lots of cash. If you are on a budget you probably should go elsewhere for the repair - assuming you know of a reputable shop. read more

They did an oil change and lost the oil filler cap. I did not realize this when I picked the car up and we left the Island early the following morning on a long trip. The car was running abnormally and upon opening the hood I saw that the filler cap was not in place. It was nowhere to be seen in the engine compartment. I stopped at the nearest dealer on our way to Oregon, and fortunately they had the proper cap. When we got back to Bainbridge, I called Rolling Bay Auto, explained the problem, and asked for a reimbursement. They said they would have found a cheaper "generic cap" and wanted to see the my receipt from the dealer before they would reimburse me. The OEM cap cost all of $17.00 or so! Needless to say, I never went back to these guys. If I could give them zero stars I would. read more

This is one of the most respectable and kindest places we have experienced in getting our truck fixed. We were getting off the ferry from Seattle and our back tire got stuck on the ramp. Pulled over and looked at the tire we noticed we were not able to drive on it too far. Looked up the neared place to get it fixed. We found Rolling Bay Automotive. I called to see if they could help with the expectation that they would be booked and not be able to get me in. Instead they empathized with my urgency and got me in that day. My car was quickly diagnosed and repaired in time for my trip. It saved me the hassle and expense of renting a car. They didn't have to set everything aside to help me out, but I'm thankful they did. We can't say enough good things about Ronji and Rolling Bay Automotive. Really top notch service. We've had car repairs done at almost all the auto shops on the island and after our first experience with Rolling Bay we won't go anywhere else. RBA has serviced all three of our vehicles and all repairs went smoothly with no hiccups. The shop is well equipped, clean, with great customer service. I had an issue with my radiator and they did an imagery test to show me exactly what was going on. Instead of suggesting I dump money to fix it, Ronji explained how I can monitor it and plan for the cost of a new radiator down the line. I find this to be honest service. They could have easily told me I needed to replace the radiator the same time they replaced my thermostat. I appreciate this kind of service! read more

Apparently, I should have read the reviews on here first before taking my car here because it definitely felt like a scam/rip. My car had started acting up and not started one day(only 56k mileage though). It started the next few days after that, but I decided since it needed the routine oil change anyway, that I would take it in to see if they could find anything wrong with it first. The owner told me they would check it out and let me know what the situation was before they did any work on it. Asked if I could leave it overnight and I agreed. He assured me multiple times that he would get back to me the same day or the next day at the latest(his promise, not my request). So I waited and waited, and never heard anything back. Finally, on day #4 I called to see what was going on, since I had heard nothing, not even a text. They told me they had started it up many times and it started up fine, so I could come pick it up, with no apology for complete lack of communication on their part. When I got there the girl on duty said they would charge me for half an hour of labor. Seemed reasonable at first, except when I got the bill it was 65$ (which is more than their tier 2 oil change). I asked if she could explain or justify this single labor charge(no parts/service), because to me 65$ seems like a lot just to turn on my car that was already working, and her explanation was, I "needed to pay them[mechanics] something." So not only did I have to pay 65$ for them to just turn on my car, with no communication on how much they were going to charge or any explanation, but I had to call -them- back 4 days later just to find out what was going on. It would have been one thing to have called me within the 2 day agreement and been up-front that my car was starting fine and asking me if I wanted them to keep trying and how much it would keep costing me. But not even trying to get in touch with me, basically felt like a really shady way to try to justify holding my car for extra days (beyond the agreement) to get to that high of a bill for "labor". I had some other things (brake fluid/tires) that I would have liked to gotten done all at once with an oil change, but needless to say I won't be spending anymore money there with these kinds of bogus charges. I really wanted to support the local small business, especially since the location is very convenient for me, but I can't recommend it based on my experience. read more

Let me start by saying that I've never written a review of any establishment in my entire life. Unfortunately, my first review ever, comes from a place of being swindled and yelled at. I feel like I owe it to the community to let them know how dishonest and rude they were. I was told they replaced a fairly major part on my car that had been in there three different times for the same issue, and was never fixed. I had three other people confirm my suspicions that the part was never replaced, but was still charged for both parts and labor. The man at the front desk looked me straight in the eyes and lied to me. He also became quite defensive and aggressively raised his voice at me when questioned of the work NOT done. I will never go back, and I am so disappointed that a small neighborhood shop could be so horrible to their local customers. read more

I have taken many cars to all the different repair shops on the island over the last 17 years. For anyone not interested in leaving the island for repairs, these guys are just fine - i can't get excited about auto repair, so "just fine" is about as high as my standards go. I would not get tires there, as I will pay more for a Les Schwab warranty anytime. However, i have called around and compared prices for brake and engine work and they win. Plus they are nice guys and local, which is important to me. I have had them make "optional" recommendations, and whether to do those is just a judgement call. I have had the dealership insist work is necessary twice and Rolling Bay has disagreed - that gained my trust forever. read more

So, continue to take my car out to Bainbridge Island, Because I know it is in excellent hands. They always make sure of what I want done before doing anything, and get everything done in a timely manner. I'm giving them the benefit of the doubt with two stars. We have taken several cars there over the years. No question they are expensive and don't exactly inspire trust with their recommendations of questionable or unnecessary services. Most recently had an oil change and was recommended air filter, fuel filter, and belts. I never blame anyone for recommnding an air filter, and replaced it myself. Talked to the dealer, and they say fuel filter is lifetime--if you're not having problems, don't replace it. There are 3 belts on the car, one of which requires dismantling the front end to replace. No one else I've shown it to can see the wear or damage to the belts they mention. Their estimate was $475 for those 3 belts, higher than the dealer. Kitsap Tire in Poulsbo quoted $325. I have had this experience regarding high cost with other services in the past. Bottom line--shop around. And don't take their service recommendations at face value. Note: I'm still a customer, as their work has always been performed properly (not always professionally--once our car came back smelling like cigarette smoke). They are by far the most convenient for us, so for oil changes and the like, they still get my business. Check Val-Pak if you're looking for coupons for them. By the way, they have an A+ with the BBB and resolved the one complaint listed with the Bureau. I don't think they are a terrible shop, but I dont' trust them and that is no fun. If anyone does have a serious complaint, I strongly suggest the BBB. read more

Taken several vehicles here and always had similar experience - they are very convenient, but after the last fiasco, it simply isn't worth it. wrong diagnoses (yes, plural); inflated costs; dishonest about estimates (they'll quote you the cost of the part - but neglect to mention the labor or the diagnostic charge); poor communication (no calls when they said they would; like to blame my spouse for not understanding her); and they seem to love to take advantage of people that aren't knowledgeable about cars. A drive to Poulsbo - or even Seattle - is worth it. read more

After listening to a litany of lame excuses that attempted to justify the amount on the bill in-front of me for standard service at Rolling Bay Auto (RBA), I got back to work and fumed over the invoice...on the bottom of it is their motto, "We're twice as good and willing to prove it". I read that and had to write this: I have had three recent experiences with two different vehicles at RBA and was beginning to wonder if this establishment was ripping me off. I did some web research and started to ask around. The cost for work that my coworkers had done was a resounding, and consistent, $200 less than I paid. Unbeknownst to me at the time of my research, one of my coworkers had also been a loyal RBA customer and was also beginning to wonder about the cost. Even my neighbors expressed their disappointment in RBA when I told them about my experience and had already instituted "an outright ban" on any family member patronizing RBA, this in spite of the fact that they are within walking distance - they too had been taken serious advantage of. In case you need more convincing, I requested a quote for the same service from another local establishment which came in $201 less. All of the above resources matched within just a few dollars what I found online from the manufacture - RBA is twice as expensive. The workmanship appears fine, but not twice as fine. RBA's reputation has never been one of superb quality, but they will certainly be known far-and-wide as scam artists if they keep this up. One has to wonder if the costs of RBA's recent remodel is being slapped onto the backs of their customer...now former customers. read more

These guys made my day! They were fast, friendly and very helpful. My car sprang a leak on the ferry coming from Seattle. Triple A towed me to this shop where the gentleman at the front desk quickly realized my dilemma - I needed a quick diagnosis to see if I should stay or be towed back to Seattle. He pulled someone away from their work to see if they could give me quick answer. They guy hopped up on the tow truck popped the hood and decided it was an easy fix so I unloaded the car and within 40-50 minutes I was back on the road. I appreciated the fact that they stopped what they were doing to give me such a quick answer. They were so helpful and nice on a day that was not shaping up very well. There were two previous postings regarding Rolling Bay Auto (RBA). One reviewer had rated RBA a two, having given them the benefit of the doubt. I had ranted and rated RBA "1", or baaaaad. Wondering what happened to those initial reviews. Still, I feel strongly enough after reading Fred R's review to reiterate my rant... In a relatively short time-span our neighbors, two co-workers, and I all came to the same conclusion: RBA was ripping us off. I really got angry when I got a bill and read something about RBA being "twice as good and willing to prove it." After several consults with experts (as in auto mechanics) and knowledgeable friends and neighbors it was obvious that RBA is not only below average, but they are certainly TWICE AS EXPENSIVE. Several things to look for: 1) Unwanted and unwarranted repairs and replacements (they are keen to replacing windshield wipers whenever possible; 2) Excuses when asked to justify the cost; 3) Lots more excuses justifying even more costs; 4) If you are a woman, as my wife will attest, lots of jargon and non-explanations followed by excuses and a bigger bill. Watch out for these guys. And Yelp, where pray-tell, are the other scathing reviews??? read more

I brought my van in for a general inspection and service today. The shop is clean and presentable, the staff courteous and the turn around within one business day. The front desk employee informed me of pricing for labor and parts after the general inspection. Since the quote came to more than $1500 I opted for half of the services offered. Upon pick up, I discovered that the technician hadn't screwed in the glove compartment nor area below the temperature settings. The screws, screwdriver and coverings were left in a pile between the driver's seat and passenger seat after being handed the car key. Since the shop closed up for the weekend I finished the job at home. I was curious because the technician wrote down that I needed a new battery and that the voltage of my current battery was at 12.2V. At home I tested the battery with a diagnostic tool and it read 12.79V. When you fork over a heap of cash ($845) to invest in the security and safety of a family van you would like to be confident that everything stated on the invoice was properly & thoroughly completed and moreover necessary. That said, I would think twice about taking one's car to Rolling Bay Automotive. Yes, it's a local business but that doesn't mean you can get away without paying attention to detail. It doesn't take much to pop the hood and go over with the customer what has been installed and/or changed out and then take a wet rag and wipe down the motor after completion. *For certain services on a car like tightening six bolts which takes 3 minutes - their fee is astronomical.* read more
