I've lived in the Little Portugal area of Mile End, Montreal for 5 years now, and I don't know how I missed this spot for so long. Thank god I found it because one large chicken + chorizo poutine can feed my hungry wife and I and we even have leftovers! The fries are fresh, crispy, and the gravy is made with drippings of their own rotating rotisserie chicken. The chorizo sausage is barbecued to perfection. Did I mention they give you a lot of food for the price!? They also have a beautiful bakery with Bolas, strawberry cheesecake, and other fresh-made bakery items. They also have great service, with friendly cashiers, and the quality of food is 6 out of 5 stars. It's my favorite place and I come here almost once a week. They are passionate about their food and generous, and if you don't feel like paying up-the-arse for delicious Portuguese chicken Romados is the place for you. It's homey, they have spicy and mild Piri Piri sauce to choose from, the fries are tasty but not too salty, Chicken Salad is really delicious, and furthermore, they have family options, rice, potatoes, and you can order a half or quarter chicken, as well as other options like soup and barbecue pork (also very good). Anthony Bourdain brought me here. What do I mean by that? My husband and I watch his old episodes where he visits the location we're headed to and do our best to try those spots. And let me tell you, he's yet to disappoint. Romados is like simplicity at its finest. A good old chicken and rice dinner with an extra punch. When I say punch, I mean the chicken will truly knock you off your feet. We had the Portuguese chicken and it was incredible. The meat was extremely flavorful and moist. It was nothing "fancy" but absolutely delicious. The Portuguese chicken came in a family sized meal and we have so many leftovers that I fully intend to eat and savor. Ew. The food here was nasty. Chicken was bone dry, everything else lacked flavor. The salads and spices tasted lukewarm and nasty. I paid a lot and barely touched my plate of any of the food here. They bill themselves like a Nando's Peri Peri but I hate to say it, Nando's might be a chain, but at least they know how to grill chicken, bake potatoes, and prepare rice and spices properly. Hands down the Best Portuguese chicken I have ever tried. If you eat chicken, try this place, this is a Must. Delicious juicy chicken, fries and salad served with a hot or a mild sauce. The setting is not fancy, but it's cheap, delicious and generous. I tied this classic Portuguese Rotisserie when we went to Montreal last year. There was a long line up, it took me more than 1 hr to get to the ordering counter. There are 2 lines, one for walk in and second for order pickup. Yes you can order in advance and skip the long line. I got it packed and also got few egg tarts. Went back to our hotel and ate it after 2 hrs. I was blown away, the chicken was so flavourful and juicy. Even the egg tarts were good. I will definitely go back there. The rice is really delicious! I was surprised to encounter such tastes rice here, which only made us sad we got the fries. The salad is pretty small, just a nice side when you need a break from the carbs. The chicken itself was really delicious and tender! However, it's really salty in my opinion. So good! Romados has perfected their chicken, and even though you don't see the chicken in this picture, it's hiding under all those fries! You get a good portion of fries and salad and rice too, and couldn't even finish all the fries. We got two half combos, and three of us couldn't even finish it! So much food. When you're in Montreal, you definitely need to stop by a Portuguese chicken shop. Fortunately, there are plenty of restaurants serving fresh rotisserie chicken with freshly baked Portuguese egg tarts for you to feast on. I should have gotten some sauce on the side for the chicken. Poutine here is great. They load up on cheese and gravy for your fries, which is always welcome. The egg tarts were very tasty. Small, local shop known for their chicken. We came into the shop around 9pm. There was still a line and the place was super stuffy. It was already hot outside, but the heat from the grills made the store even warmer. Came here to pick up a 1/2 chicken combo plate. It comes with their famous Portuguese chicken, salad and a ton of fries on top. I really mean a ton of fries. For ~15 CAD it's a ton of food. The chicken was really good and tender. Unlike most of the reviews, I didn't come here for the infamous Portugese peri-peri chicken... it was the familiar aromatic smell of a certain Portuguese dessert which enticed me in. Despite being a fast-food style restaurant/take-away which (judging by the rush) looks very popular, Romados also has a separate section and counter for their baked goods, particularly specialising in Pastel de natas. For those of you who have not had the pleasure, these tarts consist of a sweet creamy custard nestled within a crispy flaky pastry shell - heavenly! I couldn't leave without grabbing at least a dozen! The girls serving at the counter are very courteous - I asked to pick out my natas as I like them more browned/burnt on the top and she kindly agreed. They also throw in a white bun. Anyways, what to say about the Portuguese chicken? Delicious. ENSURE you get the spicy sauce because it makes all the difference in the world. - Natas ($13.00 for a dozen) - no trip is legit without an order (or dozen) of natas. It's $1.45/each but gets cheaper the more you buy. So light, flaky and creamy. Wait on the long line for your shot of chicken rotisserie goodness, we are all equals here (unless you call it in for take-away in advance, get ready for the icy stares from lesser men and women, or has the tragic distinction of being a vegetarian...in which case, I pity you). After you are done, take your chicken-y goodness to the Parc De Mont-Royal, or sit down on the bench outside. Francine (I think that's her name) would come out once in awhile to greet you and ask you how you are doing in French (I think she is the wife of Fernando, the owner). Now add a healthy (to the cuisine, not to your heart) amount of cheese curds, properly set up so it's not cold, and then add some very warm and spicy chicken gravy on it. It's Poutine as it was meant to be at the good places - it's pure and well crafted. No silliness like guacamole, no bell pepper sauce, no hot dogs, no smoked meats like the has-beens at Resto La Banquise. Just good, crispy soft greasy salty spicy dirty mess. Like embarrassing good sex that leaves you itchy and sweaty all over. Yes. It's that good. d) Sumol - I know it's not an exclusive of theirs, but shots of Sumol should be poured while enjoying their chicken. It's citrusy, it's effervescent, it's cheap(ish), won't give you a weird buzz like Guarana, and it's not coyingly sweet like those godawful American sodas. Just do it. e) Pasteis de nata - the quintessential Portuguese custard/egg tarts. There's a reason why they are ALWAYS sold out by 7p. It's soft, it's crispy, it's savory, it's better than 90% of the tart practitioners in North America (and I should know - I hit the joints in Newark often). Just buy some, and then try the other places in Montreal (a certain stall in Marche Jean-Talon comes close, just like some of the Chinatown bakeries on Rue De La Gauchetiere, but it's just not quite the same). You'll see WHY it's better. Value - $9.50 for a half-chicken meal, served with fries and tasty fresh salad. Piri piri sauce optional (but highly recommended), or just fine by itself. I dunno, the last time I ate at a Yelp 4+ stars rated place in MTL I had to fish out at least a Borden (AKA the Canadan Benjamin). Here I whip out three Macs and got me some loonies and a toonie, that's good for me and the lady, plus we got leftovers good for breakfast the next day. How about that. If that's not value for the Canadian dollar, I don't know what is. So yeah. If you are in Montreal and just so happens to be in the Plateau, GO. Pick up a Turkish coffee from Cafe Replika nearby, savor the evening, admire the street murals and await your turn with chicken goodness. read more
