I found Roman's Jewelry during my search for the perfect engagement ring for my fiancé. I went a few different places looking for something unique, nature-y (to match her love for plants and hiking), and without a diamond (at her request). I found Romans by searching google for "local jewelry shop in Folsom". I had a custom ring in mind and other shops weren't able to find it do what I was looking for, but Roman's was on the job immediately. I'll start by saying everyone I worked with was extremely helpful and not at all pressuring-- the whole experience was focused on what I was looking for. I primarily worked with Inessa, who listened to what I was looking for, helped me with some ideas, and gave me an estimate. I felt the price was very reasonable for what I wanted, especially for a custom job. They made a CAD mock-up, and I came by a few times to approve various things along the way. The engagement ring turned out beautiful-- so detailed and intricate. My fiancé loved it (attached a picture). With how great Roman's was, it was really important to us that we get both our wedding bands there as well. We found them both a few months later at their Placerville location (which was perfect because we both love Placerville). My ring is really cool-- sort of a metal/marble look. Last, I want to mention that they'd also worked on my dad's Seiko watch which had stopped working some time ago. Estimates I got from other places were crazy expensive because they would have had to ship the watch to Seiko, but Roman's was fully able to work on the watch for a great price. Romans did not seem to be too well organized. I received an email with an estimate to repair my watch. I approved the estimate. Then, the next day, I received another email with the same estimate to repair my watch, which I also approved. Then two or three weeks later I received a phone call asking me if I wanted my watch repaired. About three or four weeks later I received a call or an email saying my watch was repaired. My daughter went to pick up my watch for me. She was dressed casually but not sloppy or dirty. The jeweler behind the counter bypassed her to take care of another customer. When he started to do that a second time my daughter spoke up that she had been waiting before the other two customers. Then she was treated abruptly and a bit rudely. The watch is working properly, but they didn't bother to set the date in the watch. read more

The most awkward stuffy environment with no customer service. Walked in to ask about a piece of jewelry and look at the estate pieces (I purchase A LOT of estate jewelry.) Four employees were standing behind the counter, not a single one said hello, or greeted me. I walked around for a little bit and then decided to look at them and was finally asked if I wanted to look at something. I asked if the jewelry I brought in was real, was told both pieces were costume. Then I went to another jewelry store who acid tested my gold piece and it turned out to be gold. It just is hollow, light and in need of cleaning. So no only was I treated like an inconvenience in their store, they were wrong about the authenticity of a piece of jewelry I brought in. If you're looking for excellent customer service skip this place because it's not here. read more

Precious Gems Jewelers I wanted to do something special for my wife on our 10th wedding anniversary. So I started to shop for an anniversary ring to be welded to her current marquise style ring. I first went to Roger's Jewelry and the service was great as always. I found a nice ring, but it was just a little more than I had to spend. Chad gave me the specs of the ring that I liked and I headed to the internet to look for other Folsom jewelers. Only one jeweler, besides Rogers', had a positive review and that was Precious Gems Jewelers. I entered the store and after three minutes the young lady finished up her phone call and greeted me. I showed her my wife's ring and I explained that I was looking for an anniversary ring to be welded to it. Having come from Roger's I knew what I wanted and found something comparable pretty quickly. I asked the price and she looked at the red tag and said $490. Knowing most jewelry is negotiable I asked if she could knock off 10%. She said she'd check. A few minutes later she returned from the backroom and stated, "Yes we can do that." "Great," I said. She then peeled back the red price tag to reveal a yellow price tag. "Oh, actually, it's only $370," she said. "Wow, you just made my day," I said. Smiling, I curiously asked, "Do I still get the 10% off?" She stepped away and came back and said, "Yes, $370." She didn't say, "No, sorry it's $370 + tax. She simply said, "Yes, $370." I then asked, "Does that include sizing and welding?" "Yes," she replied. "Perfect." She then rang me up and said, "OK that will be $399." I was a little surprised, I thought we had negotiated $370, but that's fine, still a lot less than the $490 + tax, so I was good. "I'll be back with my wife tomorrow for the sizing and welding," I committed. The next day, the morning of our 10-year-anniversary, I presented my wife the ring and she loved it. Off to Precious Jewelry we went. A different young lady measured my wife's finger. After a few trips to the backroom to discuss sizing and recommendations, she drew up the paperwork. At that time I asked for one last confirmation that sizing and welding were included. She again asked us to hold on as she disappeared into the back; moments later she returned and stated that there would be a charge for welding. I mentioned the lady from the day before stated welding and sizing were included. Again she went into the back. My wife and I could hear two people discussing the situation. I could hear the owner, I now know to be Roman, state to the sales lady, "She said sizing was included. She didn't say whether welding was included or not." I asked him to please come out from behind the glass so we could discuss. About 3 minutes later he emerged. I restated my case and added, "if welding was not included in the price, wouldn't I have been quoted the price?" He shrugged. In fact to that point I had no idea of the welding cost. I mentioned welding no less than 3 times during my purchase. Not once was I told there would be a charge and in fact I was told it was included in the final price. He mentioned he remembered me from the day before and how he already honored the mistakenly marked price. I mentioned that I am glad he honors his marked prices, but that doesn't seem like a favor of any sort, that just seems like the right thing to do. Further, I didn't know it was mistakenly marked. After some back and forth I said we'd just take our money back and we'll be on our way. He pointed to the white paper on the counter and said, "No exchanges or refunds. You can get store credit." I suggested that this is poor service and I'll state as such on Yelp! He laughed and said, "Do what you have to do." "You don't care about poor reviews?" I asked. "You're blackmailing me. So no, I don't care." "Blackmailing?" "Yes, you're offering a good review for a free service." "Actually, it's the opposite of that," I explained. "I am saying you're going to get a bad review for bad service." He shrugged again. It's my contention, looking back, that the ring was marked with the wrong price. Not sure why it had two price tags, but it did. When the sales lady stated the lower price, Roman was probably unhappy and now he was using the welding to make up for his "loss." If the sales lady from the day before would have quoted me the price of the welding and included it in the overall total, I would have gladly paid. But to go back on a verbal agreement is poor service and possibly illegal. This awful experience is now or 10-year-anniversary memory. Precious Gems Jewelers could have had loyal customers for years to come. It's quite unfortunate. read more
