Neurology appointment in Waipahu, Oahu, Hawaii... When I took my cousin for his Disability Determination appointment, the doctor (Dr. Aaron) recommended that my cousin get a neuropsych evaluation. I told my cousin's PCP (primary care provider) that Dr. Aaron recommended that cousin should see a neurologist. The PCP's nurse made the appointment with Dr. Ray Romero. Located in the same Plaza as Fratelli Express, Dr. Romero's old-school office has a free shared parking lot. We walked in, took a seat, and filled out 4 pages of paperwork. Soon after, the receptionist weighed my cousin, took his vital signs, and showed us to the exam room. The first round of questions came from a Medical Student that Dr. Romero was mentoring. She was quite thorough... and so was Dr. Romero when he entered the room. I liked him. He has a good nature about him. After an assessment, cousin was scheduled for an EEG and a follow-up appointment for the results. We're looking forward to returning! read more

An employee staff Cory I think is her name was the worst customer service person I ever spoke to at this office. Very rude, yelling and refusend to follow Up on medical documents. I hardly said anything and she started raising her voice at me and won't give me a chance to explain wha I need done. I highly recommend anyone who is need of a neurologist to see Dr Romero because I can say that he is really good with his patient based on my experience as one his patient. Coming here also feels like home because most of the employees here is Filipino and speaks the language (Tagalog) which is nice so that I won't forget the language. Lol. Super experienced wise person that has skills beyond normal due to his dedication in his medical field for so many years. Yes he is old school taught yet has also kept up with technical times better than most. His treatment office was old yet sufficient. He was able to test and determine nerve non signals in my legs that no other doctor could establish! Thereafter I was able to get proper treatment for my severe lower leg nerve pain which now is totally under control. I thank God for this mans help. I will go to him again. I now have other nerve functioning issues to other muscles that are from new auto accidents! read more

He doesn't even listen to what we have to say. Stubborn and shushed me. Don't your waste time. We already had an MRI and a diagnosis from Pali Momi. He completely dismissed it. He came to his own diagnosis that's completely wrong. He did no other testing. He just changed our original diagnosis. It's not even related to our problem. Around the time of the presidential election, he asked us to vote for his preferred candidate. It was completely unnecessary and unprofessional. If you want help, go somewhere else. read more

0 stars if I could. I'm still livid about my experience today. I just asked my pcp to refer me else where, I won't be coming back! I never met a Doctor (Ray Romero) to be so RUDE and wise! I told him my concern about why I wasn't taking the medicines he prescribed... here's how it went... 1) The medicine he prescribed for my tension headaches wasn't helping much so I stopped and stuck to ibuprofen (I know it's bad because I was taking it frequently) then he said "if you don't want the medicine I give you, you can stick with ibuprofen and keep ruining your liver and kidney." In a sick jokingly way! Like the tone of his voice was disgusting! 2) I didn't take the other medicine that "prevents headaches" because it said it was for depression.. GUESS WHAT HE DID?! He fucking pulled a fat book out, which lists all types of medications and side effects. He reads one and he goes "see there's crazy side effects with every medication. If you want to listen to what you read and not take what I give you then..." and I stopped him there, I said "ITS NOT THE SIDE EFFECTS THAT STOPPED ME ITS THE DESCRIPTION." Then he goes "LET ME FINISH." (WE WERE ABOUT TO GO AT IT AT THIS POINT!) And he said "well obviously I know you're not depressed so why would I give it to you?" Then he giggles! ARE YOU SERIOUS?? Then he has the nerve to ask me "do you want me to read another medicine's side effect?" I told him "NO!" I wanted to snap so fucking bad! This appointment today was just horrific. I've had vertigo for over a year so that's why I went to visit... he sees nothing wrong and said to keep sticking to pills... but I'm only 22 and it's pretty sickening to take pills on the daily.. he laughed and said I don't really need to refer you to anyone but if you want then I guess (he then said he'll refer me to a nose ear and mouth specialist or whatever) I didn't say thank you.. and I usually do after a doctor sees me. Lol and HIS STUDENTS IN TRAINING TODAY WERE laughing along with him. I get it, I didn't take the medication and I stopped one of them because the other wasn't helping.. but you shouldn't talk to your patient like that! I FORGOT TO MENTION HE TURNED TO HIS STUDENT IN TRAINING AND SAID, "you know what's funny, people want to be seen but don't want to take their medications." And they both laughed. Absolute awful experience with Dr. Romero. I spend more time on the road than he does with me in the room. I went to him for treated because a herniated disc got worse after PT attempts. He prescribed me meloxicam which did nothing. After a few visits of no improvement, I asked if we can get some imaging done to find the cause. Went and got an X-ray and it didn't show anything. I asked what's the game plan, we still need to find out why I'm in so much pain. His response, "do nothing. If you start looking for more you can be making it worse for yourself." What the hell kind of answer is that?! I'm in pain and his treatment so far has done absolutely nothing but waste my time. I've had to request additional mri through my primary care and am currently seeing another doctor because Dr. Romero feels like he's just milking my insurance. read more

This review is for the doctor himself; be advised that the reception desk staff is a different story, but I wish my appointments with my doctors were as thorough as this one. He is often off-island, so you get rescheduled. He has med school students (interns?) in the office and he quizzes them about the patient's condition/vitals/meds, etc. I'm all for it if it means the next generation of doctors are anywhere near this man's style of care. Now, about the reception desk staff: I went in once and a young male and female were both on their smart phones as I was standing right at the counter...and for quite a while. I recently received a voicemail I could barely understand; I had to play it twice. Oh OK. Reschedule. I came to this doctor through the recommendation of my pcp. Dr. Romero is a specialist in Neurology. This review is based on my experience at that time. Initially, when I called to ask for directions I got confused by what the lady on the phone was saying. I knew that it was in the same parking area of Nandings, but wasn't sure if it was located in the two story building right across the lot. It is actually the one story building in the back next to what I believe used to be Planet Waipahu. So if you were facing the main road, it would be tucked in the back right corner...next to a separate parking lot (for employees i think) The doctor shares a space with a different doctor, so Dr. Romero is in the back office. It's either there is no other doctor or they just have different days (I haven't seen the front office open when I' ve been there) Dr. Romero seems like a good, well educated doctor. During my visit, he actually had what seemed like recent graduates? (They had white coats)-about 5 of them, come into my room and explain my diagnosis to them. He even quizzed them a couple times to see if they know/understand it a bit more. My diagnosis was the first I heard of, but surprisingly fairly common. (I don't have it anymore) I actually found it pretty awesome that he passes his knowledge to quite a few of these graduates that are just about to embark in this career. Afterwards, they left the room and was he able to access the reason for my visit. He knows what he is talking about and I am confident in his abilities as a doctor. He gave me a bunch of information and he made me understand my why's and how's of my diagnosis. I hope to not have a need to come here again. But he is a doctor that I will (and have) recommend(ed) to others if that need for him arises! read more

Waste of my time going here. Waited 40 minutes to be taken to the back, another 20 minutes for someone to come in to do an exam, and another 10 minutes for the actual doctor to come in. In all I was there for over 1.5hrs for 15 minutes of actual exam time. I was referred there by my doctor for further evaluation/testing of my constant migraines and the correlation with other concerning symptoms only for this doctor to tell me I have a migraine...which I already knew...and ignored the other symptoms. He was condescending, mocking and rude. If that wasn't enough to earn a bad review...after my vitals were taken, the nurse led me to an exam room that was literally just vacated by a patient. I waited for her to clean the room and examining table...instead she left the room and closed the door. I sat in a chair instead since I noticed the paper on the table had already been sat on, there was a large drop of dried blood on the table, the pillow partially under the unchanged paper also had blood spots. There was an empty vial laid on its side with a syringe next to it on the nearby table. There was no sign of gloves, cleaning supplies, sink or antibacterial gel. I refused to get onto the table or touch anything in that room. I informed the doctor who did not seem surprised but I'm hoping he had stern words for his staff. UPDATE: Received his report from my doctor and it was full of inaccuracies and some fabrication of things he never asked or conducted. He left out many things he said to me and his "diagnosis" and revised his "evaluation" to include things to address my doctor's original request. I was referred to Dr. Romero by my podiatrist for nerve problems. I have been to see him 3 times, each time I had to wait at least 1 hour to see him with no apology. Furthermore, his office repeatedly failed to refer me to the physical therapists they were supposed to, the didn't follow up with me on my MRI results like they said they would, and he did a really bad job of explaining my condition to me and then got upset when I asked questions about it. While Dr. Romero himself seems caring, the quality of care with this practice is terrible. The office staff rarely answers phone calls from anyone including other healthcare providers. My pcp kept trying to contact their office with no success so I had to personally drive to their office just to speak to someone. As for Dr. Romero, I addressed my concerns for MS symptoms that I was experiencing, yet all he could say was that he did not know what was wrong. He did not even attempt to look into it further. I then had to convince him to have an MRI just to make sure everything was clear and he agreed. I waited 5 weeks only to find out that the staff did not even send the refferal in the first place. After the MRI was scheduled I waited 2 more weeks, and then 2 days before my MRI it was canceled because the department said the Doctors notes were not sent in with the refferal. I continue to decline in health while getting the run around and no help from this practice. If you want your health concerns addressed, phone calls answered, and time not wasted, I highly suggest you find a different provider. read more

Dr. Romero spent quite a long time with me, listened to me explain why I was there and the symptoms I experienced. He then gave me a very through exam and thoroughly explained his diagnosis and recommendations. I felt very comfortable with him and with his overall professional demeanor. On the other hand, his front office/reception staff is quite the opposite. Just be prepared that they are not too professional or courteous. First of all the front dest guy didn't say much not even hello or I'll be with you shortly. Then I waited about an an hour and 15 min just to be taken my weight and blood pressure. Waited in a room for another 15 minute finally ask a nurse if the doctor was coming and said " his with a patient right now and 1 more before you" so finally I walk out wasted my day waiting for a doctor. I would like to give this Dr no stars, but Yelp won't allow it. PLEASE AVOID THIS DR AT ALL COSTS. Very unprofessional bedside manner! His office is next to a PORNO STORE, Suzies to be exact and this is the' landmark' the staff told me to look for when I asked for directions. He was rude, laughed when I told him the electricity he was sending up the nerve in my arm hurt, very badly and said I was the ONLY person who EVER had pain. Very wrong! He made me feel bad because I was supposedly the only one who had pain, but it really hurt-hurt enough to make this big man almost cry! When I asked him to try again, he grabbed my arm, with all the needles in it, and slammed it down on the exam table I was lying on. He said I was such a big guy, that I should be able to stand it. Well, it just plain hurt and I couldn't stand the pain from electricity in my nerves. He was insensitive, uncaring, and very unprofessional. He got up abruptly and left the room after 5 minutes, and said he couldn't do the test on me because I shouldn't be having pain and inferred that I was 'faking' the pain-which is very strange thing to say to say in this situation. He never explained the test to me, and even though I am a physician, I was not familiar with this type of test. When I asked him before the test, if there would be any pain, he flatly said none at all-which is not true, AND I am not the only one to have pain during this test. So I have been getting bad migraines for years and Dr Romero has helped me by giving me a medicine that isn't a pain med that rid of them. But for the past month I have been getting a worse, new kind. I went to see him and told him about it. He looked at the meds I take and told me "these two meds you are taking should help with that type of headache". I asked him "then why am i still getting them?" and he said "well, I will give you something". I told him "just not a pain medicine" and he said "that is all there is" and I told him I cant because I get them daily and I would get addicted FOR SURE and he laughed (in a mean way) and said "yeah, you will".
