You don't get luxury lounges or glossy magazines, but for taking your car to someone who know's how to take care of it properly they are awesome. I was there today (as a new owner) and was recommended by multiple sources. They are really excellent and really seem to care about their clients and the cars. I've owned a few cars and been to many mechanics and I will very happily keep taking mine to these people. They also have a sales division, but apart from admiring some great looking car's i've not bought any cars through them, however I did spy a very nice 993, and the price seems very fair...

Booked in for a pre-purchase inspection of a '83 944 and off the back of the report bought the car. Took it back in later to get an immobiliser, central locking and stereo fitted. Collected it but was told that speakers needed replacing and would take a few weeks to order - then when I drove it away found the air-con wasn't working any more. Went back to get the speakers sorted and air-con fixed. Phoned up and was told to come in the next day to pick it up - turned up and got blank looks from everyone - was at a different garage as they couldn't find the problem with the air-con. Got a call later saying the air-con wasn't broken by them and they couldn't see what the issue was - I got pretty angry as could only have been them - working when i took it in, they open up the dash for the stereo, then broken when i pick it up. Called back later and told they'd fixed it - they'd knocked out the earth when fitting the stereo... Then it got fun - went back to pick the car up after hours as they'd left it out the back with the key hidden. Got in the car and first thing i see is the passenger seat is ripped to shreds. It was already pretty UV damaged, but was complete apart from one small tear - its now in pieces where the mechanic has had his knees in it trying to sort the aircon out. Phoned them up and they deny everything - don't even remember what it looked like when i brought it in and reckoned it was already torn - even though their own pre-purchase inspection report mentions nothing about it. Then I notice the heater is pumping out hot air continuously - they've open up the fan heater when trying to fix the aircon and somehow buggered that up as well - cant be turned off and temperature cant be turned down, so a gentle burning breeze is pouring down onto my feet all day. Then the stereo cuts out every time there's a spike in the volume... Their offer to give me free seat material was useless - didn't pay for the speakers and don't want them touching the car ever again. I've gotta accept my car is 30 years old, but when you've chosen the most expensive garage on the northern beaches because you think they'll have the quality to stand by their prices you got to be gutted. The WORST thing about it is the total lack of integrity in trying to deny they were the cause of the aircon break and the torn seats - zero respect for them after that. Am sure other peoples experiences are better otherwise they wouldn't be able to charge the high prices and wouldn't still be in business, but i'm finding another garage.

I rang around a few places, and the people I spoke to just didn't know that much, said that i would need to bring it in etc.... Speaking to these guys they knew the problem, and suggested a reasonably priced solution. When I took it in they took care of it, and did a great job, and told me what to watch out for to prevent it happening again. They are in an old school garage near lane cove national park, and its not too bad as you can walk up to Chatswood while its being serviced. I would highly recommend these guys as they are specialists, and care about the work that they do.

Anyway, it just kept going - way past the point at which Bruce told me that every time I filled it with fuel I had overcapitalised it. Keeno first stopped driving it, then refused to be seen in it. If a client saw it the rule was to deny any knowledge of it. Didn't seem to matter that it was always parked in one one of the firm's marked spots. At the end nearly everything was broken, mostly by me, but Binga helped from time to time - he took care of the radio. The upholstery on the roof came away so that all that was holding it up was the interior light. It was like driving around in an Arabian tent. The suspension collapsed. "Fully lowered!" said Binga, impressed. Chatswood Brake and Clutch always took it in - I never got told "we're all booked up till next Tuesday". Bruce just said "Bring her in". He would find cheaper parts, but if it was important he would explain why they had to be genuine. He showed me what needed to be done and if it was too much we would prioritise it. I never once thought he was ripping me off. I hate to think what would have happened if I had taken it to a dealer, assuming they would let it on the premises. My guess is the business plan, vision, mission statement, values pledge and parts and labour guarantee would have been nice to read but the bill wouldn't. I could usually get a loaner for the day from Bruce - try that at a "Dealer Authorised Service Centre". Chatswood Brake & Clutch work on more prestigious cars than the Suba (like Keeno's) but I reckon they had a soft spot for it. Bruce understood it didn't need too much spent on it - that it had a pretty good self fixer that only failed at the very end - when then steering gave way ...and I sold it for $500. Highly recommended mechanic - and not just for brakes and clutches.

I have never once had a service or repair from Barr Automotive that was not perfect, first time. My previous car was an old car, and hence constantly required repairs, and Barr always fixed the issue first time. I have not even once had to return my car after a service or repair because the repair was not quite right. Barr Automotive is local to me, but I would travel 50km to get Igor of Barr Automotive to keep my car running perfectly, safely, and legally. My highest recommendations go to Barr Automotive if you need the best services and repairs in Sydney.

She has the run of the place and she will lie where she wants and chat with whomever she wants. Gary is trustworthy, a good mechanic, and easy to talk to. Its been two years now and all three of our cars and my mums are all looked after here. There has never been a problem and he is reasonably priced. I made the mistake of getting my car serviced in the carpark where I park in town. Bent over deluxe. Never again, back to GDR for me. Nothing like a trustworthy mechanic.

I took my car to Franks Automotive in Marrickville and spoke to Peter about the issue; Peter organised to have the car looked at straight away and told me that the Tyre just needed a plug as it had a nail in it. 10 minutes later and a free bottle of water while waiting and I was on my way and just saved myself $400. Thanks guys great service and honesty I couldn't recommend them enough!
