I moved to Austin back in August of last year, I had tried Milk and Honey. Worked out once but after they basically butchered my hair color. It got dry and turned green. I decided to give Ron King salon a chance. I already knew I was Gana be paying a little extra than any other salon but to be honest it's totally worth it. JAI was my stylist. Not only was she super down to earth ( not what I expected from a high end salon) but I was able to comfortable tell her that I can not spend more than X amount of money. Basically I was going to a high end salon on a budget. She was totally cool with it and exceeded my expectations. She's super great with color and cuts. Your hair is an extension of you. You know that. When you turn yourself over to a stylist it is with so much vulnerability. Now, it should be understood, that while my hair is important to me. VERY. I am Hispanic and it is very much part of my identity. That said, I'm pretty simple, roots, highlights. I don't really mind much who I see when I'm at a GOOD salon, say in London or New York etc. and honestly in Austin, I have had very good experiences. But ONE YEAR latter from the horror story I"m about to tell you and I am still fuming. Fuming not only because the long tresses that were once considered part of my brand have torn, shred, and broken away from my head but for how I was treated by Ron King himself. I had been going to the salon for about 8 months. Seeing anyone available - a great benefit for a salon owner - with the trust that they were a) well-educated b)were following the "profile" and formulas they purport to maintain on clients. I am almost 100% grey and did have at the time a problem with roots too dark and needed more hightlights to break up the color. I was entrusted to Javier. I explained maybe some "rat tail" highlights would be good. IF you go to Ron King you know that they have a "color bar" which has no mirrors and shows movies so you are not bored by the color application. I work when I get my hair done so I did not pay any attention whatsoever while my hair was being tinted for highlights. What happened next is every woman's nightmare. I noted that the highlights had been processing for some time but trusted none the less. But at the shampoo bowl when successive shampoos and toners where applied I knew I was in trouble. When they finally took me back to the mirror, I was horrified. My hair, ALL OF MY HAIR was a pale orange yellow and falling off in my hands. (see photos) I FREAKED OUT. Ron King showed up and a) asked me how long I had wanted to be a blond b) told me not to pull on my hair c) not to brush it or put it in a pony tail and d) said this is what happens when you don't see the same stylist all the time. I left there with the promise that they would strengthen the hair and get it back to healthy...within six weeks. I went back the next day. they treated it. Again told me no styling, no pony tails etc. and most importantly NO COLORING for at leat 6weeks. Meanwhile my hair was falling off everywhere. On the second visit they said they would help me to restore my hair by offering treatments etc. That lasted all of 4 visits. My last visit they said that was all they were going to comp. TODAY. ONE YEAR LATER. My hair is F#CKED. It's a shitty shoulder-length stretch of brittle hay. it depresses me every day and I fume every single time I go to have it done. The only thing worse than having bad service is the owner not standing behind the service they offer. If you are happy with your service there, great. If you have an inkling that you are being shafted with bad service and bad technique, you are. Bad business. read more

I'm very disappointed with the professionalism of this salon. I was quoted $125 to have my microlinked extensions tightened. But when I arrived I was told the price would START at $500. You can't retract an already quoted amount. I moved my entire schedule around to fit this appointment in and they didn't even have the decency to call me ahead of time to let me know about the drastic price increase. If so, I could have avoided wasting my time this morning. I'm from Los Angeles and wouldn't even dare to pay that amount to have my extension tightened--such a rip-off! read more

This place is great! I have been getting my hair colored by Eddie for years and he is the absolute Best! His smile and energy are so contagious and his passion for hair really shines through in his work! He turned me on to balayage and I haven't looked back! Do Not Go HERE!!!! Went to see Ron King for nothing more than a GLOSS, they took the towel off and my hair was FIVE shades lighter and fried to a pulp from ROOTS to ENDS!!!! At this point, after blown out and looking like I put my finger in a light socket, he decides to just start "cutting into it" I stupidly gave RON a chance to fix it TWICE!!!!!! It's so bad no one will touch it. I believe Ron King is all an act and he really pretends to know what he is doing. He talks a great story, he pretty much tells you the way he thinks it should be and does it. If you don't like it, he will try to convince you that you do. FRIED, PINK or whatever else.... Ron does little of the work himself. It's a ontinuous pass off to other employees and every employee, although friendly, is a puppet and afraid to speak up. I recently made an "emergency" appointment with Kati, a curly-hair specialist, after I got a bad haircut at another salon. I'd never been to Ron King, did not know Kati, and the haircut I'd gotten two days earlier was the first professional cut I'd gotten in over two years, because I kept getting bad haircut after bad haircut, and I was terrified to go back to a salon. Kati took a lot of time working with me and my hair. She walked me through how she thought I could best condition and dry my hair. The dry haircut, on my natural curls, was very minor, in my eyes, which was a huge relief. (I was very afraid I'd have to lose another inch or so of length to cut out the bad haircut.) After Kati's haircut, and following her advice on conditioning/drying my hair on my own (even without using any product or diffuser), my hair looks better now than it's ever looked in my life, and I'm so glad I found her (and Ron King). Kati and the staff (shout-out to Diane, who helped me make the appointment) at Ron King was very nice, were not at all snooty or stand-offish, and treated me very well. It was the most expensive haircut I've ever had, but it was worth it. (I never thought I'd say that!) My hair is now what it was meant to be, so my hair and I thank Kati. read more

Get a Ron for the price of a Carla! Ok, all fairness to Ron, he MAY be even more magical than Carla, but I'm pretty good & satisfied with my Carla. I moved here from LA five years ago. LA knows hair. If I liked only one thing about LA (and I'd say that's a fairly accurate number), it's their hair proficiency. Hearing that Ron King was a curly-haired magician, I made an appt at Bo Salon (as was) on SoCo, with no inquiry as to cost. New to Austin, I thought, "It's not Los Angeles! How much could it possibly cost!" hahahaha! Last words of the uninitiated. Ron gave me a real star cut, first snipping at seemingly air, while my hair was dry, actual curl by specificl curl, in a very Hollywood movie manner....like a preeminent gay abstract artist leaning forwards and back periodically, to take a fresh look, then splash another streak on the canvas. Even in LA, I hadn't been snipped with such exacting deliberation, posing as carelessness. I felt giddy. Then I was washed (well, only my hair) by an assistant, after which Ron returned with another assistant, and had me flip my head over to allow my long sinuous locks to dangle, inches from the ground. He patted them with *paper towels* (to avoid frizz), then applied copious amounts of curl product, then had me flip my head around wildly to get my curl on. Afterwards, my hair looked better than at any point in my life, except that one time when I was 22, and someone told me my hair was "the universe". And that he wanted to live in it. The Ron experience was $350.00. Actually $400, because I said yes to a mani-pedi while there. A cardiac-event number for me. I fearfully revealed it to my husband, trembling in fear. He looked at me and said, "Money well-spent. Maybe you could just cut your hair once a year." It was that good. When does a husband tell his wife that $350 is an acceptable amount to pay for a haircut? Ok, the once a year part would've been tough, but still! Despite that endorsement, I still couldn't return. Just not my kind of budget. UNTIL! Ron opened his own (glorious) place! Downtown! Ron King! And I called, with little belief, but a lot of hope....and YES! He had indeed trained other stylists to be like him! And YES! They cost less! Specifically, he recommended Carla to me and she has been my hair's life partner ever since. Not only is she adorably perky and genuine and fun, she also knows how to walk with scissors!! All around the universe of my hair. Thanks, Carla. Every one of my curls loves you. Ron King himself suggested I have Lydia cut my hair. I have had long, boring blond hair for over a year now. Lydia was great! She understood that I wanted my hair to stay as long as possible, but still have a style. She made my hair look gogeous, and she styled it to perfection. This review is a bit overdue. The truth is, I've been thinking for several weeks how to accurately express my experience with this salon. Bottom line- my wedding would not have been the same if I had selected any other place. This may come across as a dramatic statement for just hair and makeup services. However, that's the point I want to make. It was NOT just hair and makeup services they provided. Leading up to my wedding, I probably saw April (my amazing hair and makeup artist) more than I saw my own family. I was so busy and the only time I was able to sit down and escape the chaos was when I was getting my trial hair/makeup sessions, hair dyed, or styled before all the pre-wedding events. I even wrote my vows during one session! It sounds funny to say but April was almost like a therapist with her calming voice and the way she would help me stay focused on the big picture and remind me not to stress about little things (all while she created art out of my hair!) Then came my wedding day. Let me preface by saying I have AMAZING friends and family. But the truth is EVERYONE is running around like crazy trying to get ready before the ceremony. April was there, by my side, and provided the much needed support to calm my nerves. Right after she secured my wedding veil, just before I walked down the aisle, I remember looking at her and asking, "how am I going to do this??" (I was so nervous I didn't even think I could walk down the aisle!) She looked at me, smiled, and calmly said, "by only focusing on having fun." Because of those words of wisdom, I had a COMPLETELY stress free wedding. Nothing went wrong.. and if it would have.. I wouldn't have cared. Because it's not the flowers or the design of the cake you remember after your wedding. It's whether or not you had the night of your life. Which I did. And because of my carefree attitude, everyone else did as well. Well, I've already written a novel and I haven't even gotten to how amazing my hair and makeup looked! I initially came into the salon with three up-do ideas that I liked. April consulted with me and was able to identify what I liked from each of the three looks. She then created a custom up-do that blew me away. I think I received more compliments on my hair than my dress! Bottom line- prior to my wedding, I had no idea how important it was to choose the correct hair stylist. I can now say, without a doubt, it is one of the most important decisions you will make for your wedding. You WILL NOT regret your experience with this salon. I can't imagine how different my wedding would have been if I did not have April by my side. She was my rock. AND she is the most amazing, talented hair and makeup artist you will ever meet. read more

Check out Henry! Henry cut my hair for almost three years, while he was living in San Francisco. I am very particular and almost neurotic when it comes to getting my hair cut, and I can honestly say that I always left feeling great about Henry's work.
