Let me start by saying I am the WORST dental patient in the world. I dread going to the dentist…read moreand haven't been to one in over a decade. There were times in the past where I had to go through multiple hygienists due to the fact that it was impossible to take x-rays because of my gag reflex. Recently, I discovered that I had a chipped tooth in my mouth and was afraid to check it out. A friend of mine convinced me to go and see Dr. Wong as she goes to him for her dental needs. She insisted that he's really good and "it won't be that bad." A week after dealing with getting food stuck in my chipped tooth every day, I finally decided to give in and made an appointment. To my surprise, they were able to see me the same day! I went to their office which is conveniently located in Saint Francis on Liliha Street (with lots of parking) at 4pm and Wilma greeted me kindly. I completed my paperwork and provided my insurance information to them. Darci came out and promptly assisted me with my x-rays. After evaluating my x-ray, she told me that I would likely have to remove my wisdom tooth. What!? That was not the news that I wanted to hear, but Darci reassured me that Dr. Wong was good and I wouldn't even feel the shots (I found that hard to believe.) She said that he gives little kids shots all the time and they are fine (I am worst than a little kid when it comes to dentists and shots though.) I went to the waiting room to await the prognosis. Dr. Wong came out and introduced himself. He confirmed that I need to remove my top wisdom tooth and advised me that it would be an "easy extraction." If I did not remove the tooth, I would have tooth aches and other issues in the near future. Dr. Wong was able to accommodate removing my wisdom tooth immediately. I did not want to go through any pain but I was already there and had I left, I may not have returned until it was too late. I asked Dr. Wong if it would hurt and he insisted that it would not hurt him at all. I felt relieved because my main concern was the doctor's pain tolerance level. He reassured me that it would be fine. I decided to go ahead and get it over with since I was there so they got me situated in the chair to start the procedure. Deedra and Dr. Wong explained to me what was going to happen and to my surprise, I didn't even feel the numbing shots. They got me all numbed up and were ready to start the procedure. Dr. Wong went to work and before I knew it, I had one less tooth in my mouth. I honestly didn't even know that the procedure was complete until he showed me the extracted tooth. After seeing the removed tooth, I felt fortunate that I took it out. All in all, it was as painless as could be. Deedra gave me thorough instructions on how to care for my wound after the extraction along with the necessary supplies including gauze and pain killers. I went home and followed the instructions and didn't even need to use any pain killers. The staff at Dr. Wong's office even followed up with me to make sure that I was okay the next day. That was awesome as I don't often get any follow up from my dentist. All in all, it was as great of an experience as I could have asked for considering I spent the afternoon at a dentist removing a wisdom tooth. You could say that it's like "pulling teeth" getting me to go to the dentist but this time, that is literally what happened. My experience with Dr. Wong and his staff was so great that I am actually going to see Darci for a cleaning in the near future. Good luck Dr. Wong, I'll be back!

This practice is what the Aloha spirit is truly about - my gosh, what doctor that you know or have gone to actually answers his/her own office phone and helps you make an appointment? UM NO ONE - except HIM!! Extremely knowledgeable and friendly. If your looking for a doctor that actually cares about his/her patients I recommend him. I'm kind of sad that I've lived and passed by this office for the past 5 years and never made an appointment sooner? Well, now that my family knows his practice is close by I'm sure that he will be our family dentist for years to come.

Dr. spends time talking to us about how we're doing and what's new in our lives. It's nice that they care. He is thorough and answers any questions that I may have. It's hard to get a last minute appointment, but they always try to accommodate you especially if pain or some kind of emergency is involved. Other than that, you need to book months in advance to get a cleaning because they are that popular! Dr. Tanaka's employees are always friendly and offer great customer service. When it comes to billing, he always tries to work with your dental coverage and is very considerate when charging you for work done. You can work out payment plans if necessary or pay with credit card, check or by mail--he just goes the extra mile to ensure that you are accommodated. He recently put in a porcelain cap for one of my molars. It was an easy procedure, I didn't experience any discomfort and the cap feels and looks great. Mahalo doc!

In this case, my favorite dentist, Dr Emory Young, my favorite office peeps and my all-time, iron-clad, extremely caring and talented dental hygienist Suzie! I was there yesterday for a cleaning before I dashed off to a fancy gala event. Since I last wrote my review, I must admit I have strayed to another dental location out of sheer laziness and not wanting to drive to town...big mistake! I don't want to bad-mouth (get it, 'mouth'?) the other dental office but let's just say I wasn't very impressed. Once you've had a really stellar experience it's hard to expect anything less. Should I break it down for you? Honesty: my mouth had fallen prey to a dishonest dentist who ruined my teeth promising and assuring me that capping all my teeth with crowns was a good idea, even if my teeth did not need crowns. Ever since he messed me up, I've needed gum surgery and root canals. Dr. Emory Young is the total opposite, he won't try to sell you things you don't need. You'd think dentists are supposed to be honest but watch out for the ones who tell you your whole mouth should be crowned. Communication: Dr. Emory is great at it. He will explain everything in plain English. Maybe he'll tell you about his surfing experiences or his smart talented daughter too. He's easy to talk to and makes you feel at ease. You can ask him anything and he'll give you a straight answer. He always makes me laugh, and that is hard for a dentist to do (childhood trauma with dentists...gives me nightmares) Awesome cleanings: I'm not just saying Suzie is the best on the island because I've been going to her for years, but because I've had my teeth cleaned by other (ahem) dental offices that don't really do such a thorough job. I've had one hygienist tell me "wow your teeth are so clean" and proceeds to rush through the cleaning because, apparently my teeth are so clean they don't need deep cleaning? She also told my husband the exact same thing so I'm thinking she tells everyone the same thing? Clean or not, you'll get your money's worth with Suzie. She will take the time to examine your face from the outside in. She actually found an abcess on my gum on a routine cleaning that was painless but turned out to be a huge deal. If it wasn't for Suzie I may have lost the tooth. Ease in making appointments: Suzie has Saturday cleanings too! Call way in advance :-) I could go on and on but just make that cleaning appointment and see for yourself! You're welcome.

As the spouse of a local doctor I hate having to write a review like this but considering how bad…read morethis experience ended I feel it's necessary to provide the following opinion to help prospective patients of Dr. Austin Choy make a better informed decision about seeking treatment. I blame myself in part for not asking enough of the right questions up front. If I had, I would have known he was not the right doctor for me. Unfortunately, I experienced judgment over the course of treatment, then disrespectful and ugly behavior to get rid of me. It appears to me that Dr. Choy preference is for simple, straightforward, easy patients that don't have any kinds of issues and that's not me. Which he knew. I was extremely upfront about my health issues, medications that affect my teeth, and the fact I genetically have bad teeth on Day1. He had every opportunity upfront to say we were not matched, but he didn't. I understand the Why he didn't want me to continue but, he handled the How very poorly. It was so bad, it's why I need to write this review. Some doctors are passionate about caring for and helping others. That is not what I experienced and have little confidence that you would experience it either. For others it's just a means to an end and those doctors want as easy a life as possible. Ask the right questions so you can decide for yourself which one you want treating you.
