I haven't been here in quite a while, but I wanted to give them a shout out and say what I know…read moreabout them. I cannot do them justice since they have many programs here to help members of our community that I haven't worked with. I have volunteered here a few times when I was a student through UW-Milwaukee. I helped bag groceries to be handed out to members of the community who needed help. They work very hard to create a balanced bag nutritionally each time such as protein, breakfast items, meat/ eggs, fruits/ veg, dessert (if they have any), soup, pasta/ rice, and a few other types of items I'm forgetting. When they have fresh fruits and vegetables they place them out for people to pick from. They also let people pick out bread items. The number of bags people receive depends on family size. They also have baby food items for those who need them. I also organized personal cleaning supplies (keep the good stuff, throw out the bad/ expired, put out the smaller stuff for people to pick out for free when they came to pick up food, etc). I thought this was really nice of them to have available, many people looked through the baskets once I started filling them. The staff is very kind to those who come in needing assistance and try to help. The area I worked in was basic but clean. They treat the community members that need help with respect (I've seen orgs where they don't treat people very well, this is not one of those orgs!). Great place to help the local community and for people to receive assistance. I've only scratched the surface as to what this nonprofit does for the community, check out their website. Time/ money/ personal donations brought here are not wasted!

So I can go there once a month. I have generally found the employees to be pretty great. Liz is the person I most often see when I first go in. We arrived for a 3 hour shift which was to pack food boxes for seniors. There were two other companies there as well, so we had a good number of people to get the job done! Overall, they were very organized, energetic and motivating and answered any questions we had. At first I thought, how will this work with everyone knowing what to do? But you know what, the way they do it everything just moved along like a well oiled machine. People helped each other without asking and we just kept on packing those boxes. At the end, I think we did 925! They do require everyone stop for a 20 minute break halfway through and encourage you to stay hydrated. I'd highly recommend this as a volunteer opportunity with an employer group or even solo or with your family. What they offer the community is well needed and it's an rewarding experience.

I have gone to this event for nearly 20 years, both as a patron and volunteer. Originally they had only handmade bowls from hundreds of local artists, but now there are a few additional items as well as a silent auction. Vendors from around the county are on hand serving up samples of soup.

My husband and I enjoy coming to this event…read more The 1st year, we picked our own bowls but years after, we decided to do the grab bag/mysterious bowls because we didn't want to wait in line. We come every year because it's fun to try all the different soups that restaurants bring. It has a been a good way to try something that places that we've never heard of (and a good way for restaurants to promote business). There are different kinds of bread there as well for people to eat. I've used it to get the left over soup on the bottom of the bowl that I couldn't get with a spoon This year, they had commemorative spoons that they sold for $10. We enjoy coming too because it's a good cause and why not support a cause that raises awareness about hunger. It's nice because you get 2 tickets with your purchase of a bowl. You can buy extra tickets for more soup if you are still hungry and want to try more soups So here's my suggestion: go. Get a bowl. Eat soup. Support a good cause

To visit a food pantry as a client can be hard and at times embarrassing, having to admit a basic…read moreneed can't be met without help. I am a volunteer at The Food Pantry, and I see these clients every week, and can share that the volunteers and staff here are compassionate and welcoming. Clients can receive assistance once a week (Mon-Sat) by signing in and being assigned a volunteer shopper who will show them all the items and quantities available for their household. And the nicest side effect is the friendships I see forming as clients, staff, and volunteers work together to ease hunger. The work in the background that keeps this Pantry running smoothly is impressive, from the legal requirements to the goal of near-zero waste. What is not fit for human consumption is shared with farmers to feed their animals. Cardboard is recycled and plastic wrap is turned in for reuse in other weather-proof items such as furniture and decking. The dumpster is rarely filled with such careful oversight. If you are in need of food and are a resident of Waukesha County, which is a very big county, The Pantry is here for you. Bring an ID, and proof of residence, such as a utility bill or rental lease. If there are more in your household, bring ID for them also, such as birth certificates for children or school ID. We also have a pet program to help feed your cats and dogs, avoiding food-insecurity for everyone in your household. If you want to donate food, personal products or pet food, we are grateful. If you are male and homeless or without a place to sleep except maybe outside somewhere, show up…read morehere Monday, Wednesday, or Friday at 1:30 PM. You will be asked to give your name, social security number, and birth date. Then show up the next Monday, Wednesday, or Friday to be interviewed to be put on the waiting list. Provided that you are not a sex offender, you will be put on the waiting list. You will be let in within usually 3 - 5 days depending on whether any current resident leaves. The Guest House does not have meals every day, and they rarely have breakfast, but there is a refrigerator filled with sandwiches if you are hungry. This is a slight drawback, but it is not the end of the world as there are a few other places where a person down on his or her luck can get a free meal. There doesn't seem to be a required bedtime. The lights in the dorms go out around PM, but you can stay in the basement or the main lobby room indefinitely watching TV if you like. Everyone has to be awake and out of the building by 7:30 AM. There is a chores board that they write different names on each week for people that are responsible for different daily chores that week. Each resident is assigned a case manager who will help each resident gain employment and a place to live. It is a good place, and I found all of the staff and volunteers to be good people that treat the residents like people as opposed to treating them like less than people which staff at another area homeless shelter does.

They made me not passing drug pee test on the stall when I had hernia condition which I can't stand d and pee same time because of hernia. they don't give a fly about your health problem. it was a rip off so I walked out because of their unfair and picking on me just because I complain to my case worker about the staffs weren't doing their job right way, they weren't friendly to me sometimes which is not in professional way work supposed to be when I respected and follow their rules 100%, they don't give a crap about it. Don't ever come to this Mission ever. Staffs don't treat us friendly way, they give attitudes and make people upset and angry. Staffs don't give a crap if your belongs had been stolen, and do nothing about it. Case workers at Mission does excellent job and respecting me being deaf, communicated with me in right fair way by writing down and spoke through the phone as translator into words, they had patience with me which is impressed and respectful. Staffs aren't respectful at all. They need to replace unprofessional staffs like Will, Jeffery, and white guy, skinny one. Other staffs was friendly and nice, respectful to me expect Will, Jeffery and white guy for carelessly communication with deaf people. Terrible staffs ever. I'm planning to sue them with ADA laws.

This is a non profit organization for people who have mental illness. It doesn't matter if you have…read morebeen struggling for years or a short period of time. Grand Avenue Club is the place that will always be there for you. It isn't a place where we have therapy groups but we do help each other out when there is a need. We work together to keep everyone healthy, doing things such as yoga, meditation, advocacy, and other more subtle ways. It's hard in the beginning because you come into a large building with a bunch of people that you don't know. But everyone is very friendly and helpful and you make friends quickly. You can find job training, learning help, you can possibly make an entrance into the workplace with GAC's help. There are so man benefits to being a member that I can't list them right now.
