Polite. Pleasant. Personable. Professional. Efficient. Timely. Effective. Could a dental practice BE any better? Not that I've experienced. From the front desk staff to practice manager to dental assistants and Dr McKay himself, I have a difficult time imagining how this practice could possibly be any more delightful or responsive. In addition to routine cleanings, I've had a couple of emergency dental situations this past 18 months (involving root canals, implants and crowns). Never the definition of 'fun', but, gosh, they collectively make it as pleasant and palatable as any dental experience could be. I've never waited more than 5 minutes past any scheduled appointment time; they've fitted me in their schedule as immediately as an emergency arose; they'll take a conservative 'let's try this measure first' approach, stand fully behind their work( or is it art? ) and remind you by email, text and/or REAL HUMAN (yes, that STILL can happen these days!) call of your upcoming appointment, however you'd prefer. Want to watch the news in your dental chair? Or meditate instead to lovely serene music? Or be inspired by lovely philosophical quotes? Have complete silence and disengage from the crazy world for a bit? Engage in chit chat, or not. Cup of tea or coffee? Your choice. No problem. They've really got client service and satisfaction down to a very fine art. I very highly recommend. Let me start by saying I HATE going to the dentist! I get major anxiety and panic attacks the moment I sit in the chair . I was in major need of a tooth extraction and was in serious pain and i called several places . Just From my phone call with gale I felt at ease and confident I should go here. She was so nice and understood my emergency. They fit me in right away and Dr lai was absolutely amazing she was gentle,took her time and was very sympathetic to my pain. I felt zero pain during the whole procedure and she kept asking how I was doing and explained to me everything she was doing. I feel so much better after being in pain for 3 weeks . I have been going here for over 35 years. My hygienist, Gita, is amazing. Her kind, warm, and caring demeanor makes you feel comfortable immediately. She does a great job each and every time I see her. She's also really fun to talk to. I can't imagine seeing anyone else! My dentist is Dr. McKay. He's really nice, fast and almost painless. I have had a lot of work done and he's always professional and caring. The entire office staff is friendly and very accommodating. You're in great hands with Dr McKay. This was my first time getting anything major done by him. I was lucky to be squeezed in the same day for a tooth ache which turned out to be a bit more than I expected. Dr McKay explained his findings and within about 30 minutes we dove into a root canal. I have never had this type of dental work done before and felt confident and trusted him that this was the best course of treatment. I can say it went so well. Dr McKay and staff took great care of me and it was relatively painless. Now I am home hours later and expected some discomfort but nothing crazy. I swear he could have done this blindfolded. My relationship with this office started out okay, in fact super pleasant and awesome as far as personal compatibility goes, but quickly unraveled over the course of the last 2 years. This place is a mirage when it comes to dental care. Sure, if you have perfect teeth and just need a cleaning every so often, then by all means go here, but personally, I have found them to be terribly insufficient in all other areas and not as detail oriented as I'd like from someone who is supposed to provide a service primarily dedicated to extreme detail and care. I had an issue that went unnoticed for some time until I brought it as a concern up during a cleaning at the beginning of the year. I then found another dentist for a second opinion, who I chose to switch to (as previous care provided by the office of Albus and McKay was both faulty and unsatisfactorily completed according to my current dentist.) The shoddy work and false trust of Toluca Lake Dentistry has resulted in me needing to not only replace the crown that was set in by this office LESS THAN A YEAR after it was completed (naturally a second crown in less than 5 years on the same tooth is not covered by insurance), but also undergo both a root canal and gum surgery as well, the latter of which would not have been necessary had the office of Albus and McKay taken care to not set the crown structure below the gum line in the first place, poorly shaping the remaining tooth structure (which has since had to be rebuilt) and potentially exposing me for periodontal disease down the line, and therefore requiring an additional and costly surgical procedure. It has been both financially expensive (to the tune of nearly $3,000 on top of last year's $1800 or so, and that's with insurance) and mentally and emotionally exhausting as I have undergone batteries of medical tests and missed many days of work trying to figure out what was making me feel so sick and tired. Having a dentist take a peek in my mouth for less than 5 minutes during an hour long appointment, tell me everything is okay, collect his country club dues, and send me home has happened with this office more than once. I have also had to redo the work on the space behind my front teeth, as the fillings this office did less than a year ago had decay under and around them. This whole ordeal has cost me over $5,000 when all is said and done due to this office's poor work and lack of further diagnosis after work was completed. Aside from being in pain for half a year plus after having my crown work done, and being told that "it was just settling still", or "some sensitivity is normal for months after, even up to a year" any time I questioned my discomfort, I take issue with the way this practice is run overall. Many times I have found myself in this office waiting in the chair to see the dentist longer than I actually am in his presence for, and have spent the vast majority of my time with the nurses/hygenists instead. I'd like to excuse it as "that's the just way it's done these days", but based on my current care provider, I know this to be untrue. From the moment I step into his office until the moment I leave, I am with my current dentist for almost the full duration of my appointment- close to 95%+, as opposed to this office's 5-10% in person time (on a good day.) It seems Toluca Lake Dentistry is all about the volume game. For the amount of money that dental care costs me and my employer, I expect REAL consistent care from the person in the office with the most training, and rightfully so- I only have one mouth, and am a person, not a number with a dollar sign attached. Also, it seems that I was switched to Dr. McKay without my consent, as he is the last dentist who saw me during my previous two or so visits, and quite frankly? His lack of empathy and overall personality towards effectively communicating with patients sucks. He comes off as defensive and confrontational when presented with questions about alternative information, which doesn't bode well as someone paying for his services. I have since switched dental care providers to someone who can treat me more satisfactorily, with better care and empathy, and will encourage others to do the same. My best regards to the nurses and hygienists that continue to work at this office- you have all been extremely pleasant, and I commend you for standing by your captains on this ship, whatever sorts of pirates they may be. read more

Great staff. Extremely helpful and accommodating. I had to have an emergency wisdom tooth extraction and they helped me get an appointment straight away. I was nervous as I Have a fear of going to the dentist but once in the chair both the assistants and Dr. McKay kept me clam and explained everything. The extraction took less then 2 mins the longest part was getting numbed up! Will deff be using them as my regular dentist from now on. read more

I did not have a good experience at this office. I made an appointment as a new patient. A filling I had came off and I was in pain especially when touching. I expected as a new patient to see the dentist, to have some X-Rays taken and give me some information about my teeth. That was not the case. After making me wait for 40 minutes finally I was taken inside and was told that I was there for a cleaning. Really? No doctor, no assessment and straight to "pocking" my teeth???? I have very good PPO insurance and I think that as a new patient a doctor should have assessed my teeth before cleaning. I just left and I do hope they do not charge my insurance for the visit. I went to Dr McKay office in Toluca Lake for the first time this month. From my initial communication with the office and the reminders of my appointment both by text and email, this office left a flawless impression. As I entered, I was greeted by an amazing professional staff from completing my paperwork until I was seated comfortably in the chair for my dental x-rays. I am not a fan of dental xrays but the assistant was upbeat and made the entire process go by so fast. I left my appointment with a happy mouth and pocketbook. Dr. McKay is, hands down, The BEST! I had suffered two botched dental procedures and was reluctant to ever trust a dentist again before I met Dr. McKay. I was in searing pain for months and determined to never trust a dentist again, yet desperate for help. I decided to consult the internet for a solution (diet modifications and prayers was not going to fix this problem). I came across Dr. McKay in my search for "root canal and tooth extractions". I filled out a form on their website for pricing information and received a call immediately. It was only 7am. That was impressive. I spoke to his assistant in Toluca Lake. We discussed my case and she was confident that they, "could save the tooth". I was weary at first, but the yelp reviews encouraged me to give him a try. I couldn't be happier! His staff was incredible; so welcoming, professional and accommodating. I was a walk-in without insurance and they were willing to help. I was sent to Dr. McKay's Glendale office (BEAUTIFUL!!) to have my emergency root canal done right away. The staff there was even more awesome and took care of me. When I arrived Dr. McKay greeted me like a person (not a patient), sat down and explained everything we needed to do. His warm disposition eased my anxiety. He stressed that I would be PAIN FREE. I appreciated his candor and humor. He and his assistants were meticulous in their work and checked-in often to see if I was OK. Upon walking out of the office I felt a deep sense of relief- No more pain AND my tooth was saved! I even scheduled a cleaning for the next day because my experience was that positive. The doctor was fine, but the office was not. I called to explain I have a wisdom tooth finally coming through my gum well into adulthood, which probably needs to be removed, and they said I needed to do a consult before referring me to their affiliated oral surgeon. I went to this consult and got a full set of x-rays which were nearly $200. Then Dr. McKay looked at the x-rays and looked at the tooth and said, "Yup, that should come out. Go to the front desk for your referral." That was the entire visit. I called the oral surgeon's office to whom I was being referred and was told the x-rays that Dr. McKay's office took were not done well (never mind they were very painful to take, in the first place) and would need to be redone. I asked their receptionist if I even needed to see Dr. McKay to get the referral and she told me, "No, you could have just called us. We do everything you need." So now I get to pay for x-rays twice while having wasted my time on the first office visit. This was all about increasing their billing and not about taking care of the patient. read more

DO NOT GO TO THIS DENTIST! The staff is mostly nice with the exception of Roxanna who is a nightmare! She has the worst bedside manner and insults you while smiling and laughing! I had to have a back tooth removed and she told me my insurance was the worst she had encountered and didn't cover the extraction. They then charged me upfront for the procedure, I called my insurance a few days later to find out i did have coverage for the extraction. They overcharge for procedures and make you feel ashamed if your teeth aren't perfect. Why is shaming allowed in 2019? The doctor is arrogant and rude, I will never go to this office again. Dr. McKay is amazing! Along with his staff especially the lovely Roxanne. I had an accident while on the job and couldn't find anyone to help me on a late Friday night. It was an emergency situation where my front teeth had been chipped and were falling out. I was so scared and didn't know what to do. I was referred to Dr. McKay who answered his phone that night and was kind enough to take me in the next morning right away. Roxanne handled all the Workers Comp information, health insurance and all other paperwork they needed right away. She is so pleasant and made me feel extremely comfortable. I was sobbing while in the office because I feared that my smile would never look the same again. Roxanne and Dr. McKay calmed me down and made my smile better than it did when I had first come​ in. Long story short I have switched from my dentist and now call Toluca Lake Dentistry and Dr. McKay my new home and dentist. Glad-handing chair-side manner does not make up for the fact (and corroborated, unbidden, by subsequent visits with dentists in different offices, and with my orthodontist--while I was looking for a new regular dentist) --does not make up for the fact that the crown Dr. McKay put into my mouth is about one third, or more, smaller in height and circumference than it should have been and now I have to deal with a lisp, sibilant S's (or a whistle), a reservoir of drool, and what feels like a marked asymmetricality inside my mouth, as well as an imbalance in my jaw, my bite. Speaking, and biting, chewing, and eating are definitely and uncomfortably changed. What was a perfect acting/voice/speech machine, adept at sounds and dialects and accents, now my mouth has an internal structural problem that never before existed and so never needed any structural speech-production remedy in my life, before Dr. McKay touched my teeth. Now I deal with a noticeable lisp, even a whistle, when speaking and when reading material out loud--any time I vocally communicate. The emotional fallout is heavy. Then there is the question of whether or not I took the three molds--my property--from the office, or, as my memory tells me--that I left there, saying that "this conversation isn't over." It's a "he said/she said"--so I have no proof of (and so no legal recourse for) the office destroying my molds, which would have been the actual physical proofs of Dr. McKay's crown being the wrong size and shape. A few months later, when I called the office to say that I wanted to retrieve my three molds (the one Dr. McKay had made, plus two molds that were added later to that box: one from a new dentist and one from my orthodontist), I was told that I took all of the molds with me. I don't think so. Like I said: "he said/she said;" It's the word of Dr. McKay's office (protecting itself) against my memory, my word. I am sorry that Dr. McKay ever came into my experience. Dr. McKay, to whom Dr. Albus sold his practice (where, previously, I'd been a satisfied patient for more than twenty years, and so trusted that the quality of work would not diminish with Dr. Albus' retiring), was not the dentist for me. If I could leave no stars for Dr. McKay, I would. Dr. McKay is more than a disappointment. In my experience, he is a destroyer of perfect speech production. He threw my bite (and eating) and my speech way off with his careless work. read more

I am the penultimate British chickenshi*t man who is terrified of dentist. This stems from British dentists, or should I say torturers, from when I was a kid in the 1950's. No, I didn't have Austin Powers teeth, thankfully I have fairly good teeth. But, as fate happens, I broke a tooth a few weeks ago. I was referred to Dr McKay by a close friend and plucked up courage and went to him. I have never ever been treated so well in a dentists office. His staff were excellent, professional and caring. The doctor himself is calming, he explains everything beforehand, he tells you what's he's doing and does it quickly. Although I have to have nitrous to relax me for the drilling, I still was fine in the chair. Today, after three weeks with a temp crown, I went and had my new permanent crown inserted. Again calming, caring professional staff who knew to numb me before novacaine shots and the good doctor made sure everything was in place correctly. I was in and out of the office today in just under an hour. Will I go back? You bet I will, hopefully just for cleanings, but I will recommended Dr McKay to everyone I know. read more

Hate to do this. Never leave bad reviews, but they left me no choice; so I rather make sure future patrons have the transparency I wasn't afforded. Upon booking an appointment online; I was contacted to make sure that my Insurance carrier was accepted (I get it, then need to make sure they're covered before wasting they're time) I submitted my info, green pass go. what they failed to tell me was that while its accepted , its out side of my network, so I would have out of pocket costs. Through out the visit I was asked multiple times 'how did you hear about us' etc. to which I responded every time that it was just convenience as I live down the street. There were multiple times times where they could have been transparent with me about my insurance. True, in the end I could have known better so its my fault, but it speaks volumes to how they do business: *before you enter lets make sure your insurance clears......if it does'nt pay in full; doesnt matter, they got theirs you'll figure out the rest* reeks of desperation and nickel and diming. There charges didn't reflect what my insurances did, to which I called and found out they made a mistake. on top of which they added a PPE fee after the fact. Im all for protection during these stressful times, and the people working there should be treated with protection and safety....but after how they handled everything, it was too much to now after the fact slap a fee on. Didnt help that when I said it should be removed because I was never notified, the woman tried to guilt trip me saying I don't want them to be protected. Tell you what, next time....first be upfront with your customer and not so concerned with only lining your own pocket before you ask your customer to be concerned for you. The penny pinching and thin veiled guilt shaming wasnt a great look for this office. read more
