We went to the Juneau Pharmacist and purchased some "on the shelf" ointment. We went to the Pharmacy Window inside and inquired about it's effectiveness. The woman Pharmacist said yes, but to couple it with a warm cloth and a Green Tea Bag. Sounds a bit strange, but here 24 hours later, the Stye has shrunken significantly, and my wife is on the road to recovery. You go in there now and all you see is tourist stuff. Not to mention the tourist take so much of our stuff and make it challenging for the locals to get what they need. One drug store for downtown Juneau is just not enough anymore.

The Juneau Drug Co. is an easy, short walk from the cruise ship docks, making it an excellent choice if you need something fast. They have all sorts of souvenirs, snacks, and drugstore items. The place is stacked to the ceiling with everything you'd need. After a couple of days at sea tearing up the dance floor, I had really bad blisters that actually made it difficult to walk. In search of band-aids, I found exactly what I needed at Juneau Drug. Now, I paid a premium for them, but it was great to get relief. Note that they also have a very large section of seasickness meds too (at a very high markup). For the convenience and the well-stocked shelves, Juneau Drug gets a solid 4 star rating.

I'm a 48 year old man on a cruise stop, buying a 6 pack of beer. I might look a little younger than…read moremy biological age, but no one has mistaken me for a minor in a very long time. With a smile I place the beer on the counter. The woman behind the counter, a short overweight lady I would guess to be in her early to mid-30's just scowls at me, before asking for my ID (it's been a long time since I was carded at all). With a smile I hand her my Canadian Permanent Resident card, issued by the federal government of Canada, whose border is about 30 miles away from where I was standing. She inspects it quizzically before handing it back to me saying "it needs to have an expiration date." Confused, I take the ID back to inspect it, and again cheerfully, I point her to the bottom of the card with the expiration date, and my birthdate directly above it. She again looks it over like she can't really read, hems and haws and acts like maaaybe she is going to ring the order up, but maybe not. Here's where I made a mistake apparently- I jokingly said "my 21st birthday is over 27 years old, what exactly is the issue?" and shrugged, she immediately shoves the ID back at me and says "I'm not going to serve you." Shocked, I ask to speak to the manager, but I notice there is a customer behind me so I ask her to please take care of him first since she had been wasting our time for a couple minutes now. She ignores that and leaves him waiting while she gets the manager. I'm expecting the manager would have half a brain and some sense of customer service unlike the clerk, but the also 30-something manager young enough to be my daughter looks at the ID and says "we're not going to serve you." I should have asked whether she thinks I'm under 21 years of age (preposterous) or that my federally issued Canadian ID is fake (ridiculous), instead I just left empty-handed as she said "we do things differently in Alaska." Yeah, apparently you do.

There's a massive parking lot with plenty of spots, a full-service pharmacy, and an on-site fuel center too. Since this chain is owned by the same one that runs Kroger and Smith's I was excited that I could earn rewards points with my purchase! The store has a big deli and bakery with fresh items, and has all sorts of local and national brands. The prices are on the high side (this is Alaska, after all), but they carry just about everything you could ever need or want. There's even a small section that sells generic Alaska souvenirs if you need to pick up something for the folks back home.

After over a decade of filling prescription medication at this pharmacy, a prescription was filled…read morewith a nontypical form, large capsules instead of small tablets, without contacting me before or notifying me at pickup that this change was made. Once the medication was picked up it could not be returned, I cannot swallow large capsules, as is common among older people. When I went to the pharmacy to ask why I wasn't contacted in advance or notified at pick up, I was told they didn't have time, Moreover, the pharmacist blamed me for leaving the pharmacy without checking the medication when I've been filling it and taking it as a small tablet for over a decade and without knowing it could come in a different form. I was also told that I could break the capsule and pour the contents in water. I returned the medication to the pharmacist who said he would destroy it. To me this is inconsiderate and demonstrates the lack of concern for the welfare of their customers. I did not receive a refund or useable replacement for the prescription medication I returned.
