These people are the worst! We used a room divider for a year and had a scheduled appointment for it to be picked up. No one showed up, and no communication on the day of. Finally heard from them the following day and were told it was a mistake and someone would come asap. Again no one came, and no one responded after numerous phone calls and emails. Two days later and we are still waiting for a response. We are moving out of our apartment tomorrow and will be hiring a contractor to remove the wall instead. Such a hassle and annoyance with the added expense and inconvenience. AVOID AT ALL COSTS. This is truly unacceptable. I needed my temporary walls removed. Cathy Vendrell, their installation coordinator, initially scheduled a removal date. But on the day itself - no one appeared. No phone call. No e-mail. After reaching out to her multiple times by phone and e-mail, I still didn't get a response. The company basically ghosted me and did not fulfill their part of the contract. I now have to hire a a demo crew to remove the walls - that's $500 leaking out of my wallet. I've been reading some reviews here on Yelp from several people having a similar experience. It took our condo close to three months to review and approve our temporary wall installation and Eli (Project Coordinator) was very patient throughout this time. First day, a team of four came right within their ETA and they hit the ground running. The team lead (Andre) began to take measurements right away as I confirmed the description of the wall needed. The installation was smooth but when it was time to remove the wall, no one showed up despite booking an appointment a month in advance and confirming multiple times. After they didn't show up, I was ignored by Cathy, the installation coordinator, for days and could not get in touch with her. I was skeptical because it's NYC and we have so many shoddy and sketchy construction and service providers. But these people were great. Cost was decent and they scheduled in just a few days--and on a Sunday!! They went way above and beyond my expectations: Arrived early. Cordial and didn't talk your head off. Respected the walls, floors and furniture. Cleaned up after themselves many times during the process. Not that much sound, all things considered--they're putting up a wall after all. Dealt with our difficult ceiling (many pipes and fixtures) and extended the wall all the way up at no extra charge. Other places refused to deal with our ceiling. Though they made no claim to soundproof quality, I'd say about 80-90% of sound is muffled, and this with mostly single-paned glass for the wall. They came back when I had a minor issue that I hadn't brought up while we were arranging the work--came the next day and fixed it for free. The end product looks great and we couldn't be happier. Process: Two nice guys arrive early. One measures. They both come in with the appropriate studs, doors, panels, etc. There are a lot of materials, so make sure they have room to put it all down or lean it safely. They BUILD the wall on premises, so make sure you have at least the recommended 4 feet clearance on both sides. I'd suggest more than that, if you can swing it. Occasionally they will leave to retrieve more materials and on breaks, etc. Keep in mind that these are temporary walls, so they won't be as 100% fitted as permanent walls. They came very close, and most people won't notice any difference. But if you look very very closely there are minuscule sliver gaps where our existing walls and ceilings are uneven and the temporary wall couldn't quite match up exactly. All in all, much more professional, cool, and accommodating than just about any other service provider with which I'd dealt in NYC. read more

And the installers absolutely reeked of cigarettes whenever they entered my apartment, and they were putting/leaning their materials on my brand new white nursery furniture without asking if that was okay. I had to ask them a couple times to not do that and ended up putting sheets over the furniture. Also, a couple times they left my apartment (I think once to get supplies and maybe once to get lunch), but they didn't tell me they were leaving, where they were going, or when they'd be back, so I was sitting there for close to an hour each time wondering where they were. The guy that use to respond to my emails years ago was great. He answered all my questions. Unfortunately, the current person that's female was selective in what to answer instead of answering all of the questions, acknowledging it at least or a simple yes or no. I asked twice so I'm no assuming. For the sliding door, the door didn't actually lock after a short period. The Hispanic crew assigned to me definitely discriminate females. We've been trying to get a temporary wall installed in our co-op apartment, and needed an estimate for the work for approval. Unfortunately our board didn't approve the first design. When we asked Room Dividers for two other estimates with different designs to try to resubmit after consulting with an architect, Room Dividers asked for a $200 deposit to prepare the estimate. I'm guessing it takes about 5 minutes to fill out the estimate and email. I was pretty upset when they sent this reply: "if you are just wasting our time, pay for it." The wall design would have cost $2200 in business for them. I'm pretty shocked that they decided to take this line. Co-op boards are frustrating enough, and you'd think a vendor would be understanding with enough experience in their line of work to be nice to clients who already have obstacles they are trying to overcome. read more

I just had the worst experience with them coming to remove the walls they installed. I have a storage bed from West Elm (made from solid pine wood - I just looked it up) and it is very heavy. I remember when I moved in it was super difficult to bring it up my flight of stairs. There was space between the wall and the bed but the guy said there wasn't enough space so he had to move the bed. I told him the bed is heavy and to be careful. He then pulls the bed from the foot of the bed. Because my room is small I was basically trapped on one side of the bed. As he was pulling the bed wasn't really moving and I noticed it was separating from the headboard. When I went over to look I noticed he was splitting the wood so I yelled for him to stop. I told him he had split the wood and my bed and he immediately said it was already broken and he was pulling gently. There is no way he could have been pulling it gently because I know how heavy the bed is. I contacted the company and they said they aren't liable because they aren't movers and the area should have been cleared. My response to that is, you guys were able to put up the wall with my bed in it when we paid a couple thousand for our walls, but if you can't remove it (when there's not $$$ involved) without moving the bed then tell me you can't move it and that I need to get movers to move it. At this point I was frustrated and upset but whatever shit happens. THEN the guy who broke my bed started saying my bed is cheap and it's not real wood and that's why it broke. He also continues to make the claim that it was already broken and I am blaming it on him and that I was a horrible person. At this point I was so angry I was almost on the verge of tears. The bed is heavy AF so that's why it can't be particle board (a la ikea) and because it's so heavy you couldn't have just gently pulled on it. The fact that the wood split from the screws is because the bed was being pulled. On top of that he comes after to inspect it and said he can fix it by putting in some screws. -_- if you didn't break it why are you trying to do a quick fix by putting in some screws, which won't work because if wood splits you can't just patch it up? I honestly cannot believe the experience I just had. The company then said they won't charge me $150 for having the wall for more than 3 years...even though my bed was worth 10x that. In retrospect this feels like a bogus charge because they end up throwing out most of the wall anyways. Yeah, it stinks my bed was broken and I basically got compensated 1/10 of it, but what really makes me angry is that there was no apology and remorse. Instead they questioned my character and blamed me. I would beware and make sure you take pictures of your stuff before they come so if something happens they can't just say it was broken before. I am moving into a new apartment in Gowanus that is an open studio set-up and therefore requires a wall to divide the living space from the kitchen. I looked into temporary wall installation services and finally made the decision to use Room Dividers NY. I filled out their online dimensions paperwork and discussed in great detail what I wanted with their online sales representative, Eli Roth. The wall was installed last Thursday and, after the two intallation contractors arrived, I realized that they really didn't seem to understand the job as it was supposed to go down. After going back and forth for about an hour, we finally settled on modification of the original plan (a partial wall which will allow me to still install a compressible door. I paid $700 for a partial wall and several hours of work, but I had to settle for a white wall when I made it clear that I needed a brick or a Japanese style wall (now I will be stuck repainting) and on top of it, the sheet rock that they used suffered several places of visible damage. Rather than fill in the damage with caulk or turn it so that it was not visible, the damage is clearly visible along the edge of the wall and it is something else that I will have to fix. As a result, I am giving them 3-stars. I will review my review when it comes time to un-install the wall and I see if they manage to do it without damaging anything. read more

So far so good! I was able to get a very basic L shaped wall with a door (10.5 ft x 9 ft) installed in about 3 hours! I couldn't believe how fast two guys put it up and painted it. Cost: I got quotes from four different companies and Room Dividers were the cheapest of the legit companies (some companies seemed sketchy). I was able to pay with credit card online which I loved (no extra fee for doing so, and I get credit card points!). I asked whether I could get a discount if I paid in cash, but they said they offer no discounts. Scheduling: I scheduled the wall install with about 18 hours notice! Layout: the installers did not offer any sort of advice or recommendations for the wall or surrounding area. I had a bunch of questions and had expected them to be able to give me advice like, "usually this layout works" or "the door should go here" or "the standard opening should be __ ft to allow room for furniture to go in and out" etc. I can see that for liability reasons the installers can't give advice (there was also a bit of a language issue), but I should have had the room exactly planned out before they arrived. The company website offers a Room Planner tool that's great - definitely use it! Installers: on time, very polite, not super strong English but fine enough for our purposes. The team I had said they'd put up hundreds of walls together, and it showed. After, they swept and wiped the floors and cleaned everything up. IMPORTANT: Really heed the 4 ft rule (clear out at least 4 ft of space in both directions around where the wall will go). They bring in LOTS of stuff and will use LOTS of space. I thought I had cleared out way more than enough space for them, and they still needed to use the entire free area of my apt (including the entire kitchen) for prep room. read more

I leased a temporary wall from them for 3 years, and when I scheduled an appointment for them to remove my wall, it took them a total of 15 minutes to take the wall, they swept my floors, painted my ceiling, and they brought my original deposit from 3 years ago without me even having to ask! I live in a condo in the city and the building management is very strict. They require insurance to be faxed ahead of time, a special kind of flooring covering, and only a small window of time for the workers to come in and install the wall. I tried working with one other prominent temporary wall company, but they respectfully declined their service due to all the hassle my building put them through. I was worried I wouldn't be able to find any temporary wall company that would put up with my building, but Room Dividers came through! So they came in to take down our wall, which lasted so well after a year and four months. Review about the wall itself: the insulation they put in isn't necessarily "sound proof", but our TV was on the other side of the wall from where my bed is, and it never once woke me up or bothered me if my roommate or guests wanted to watch TV or listen to music. There is no need to pay more for extra insulation, I promise. This time around, I was the one to be home, and honestly, I was on pins & needles to see what the holes - if there were any - would look like and if they would cover them up. The guys came early, went straight to work, and had the whole wall taken down in less than 30 minutes. You can't even tell that there was a wall up without searching really hard for it. They did sweep up after themselves, but I do recommend going through behind them with a wet Swiffer to catch the dust, and be sure to look for any spare screws they might have missed. They then went to work fixing the minimal holes that were left behind, and had that all fixed back up within about 30 minutes. The coolest part: I had hung a few pictures next to the wall, and they even filled up and painted over the 4 (small) holes that I created, without me even asking for it! The second coolest part: They even remembered my roommate and our mothers from when they originally came in last summer! (They actually "accused" me of not living there last time, even though I was only at work.) The whole experience thoroughly impressed me, but these last two details were only cherries on top. If I ever need a wall again, I'm going with them. read more

Room Dividers NY installed a basic wall with swing door today, which I only scheduled yesterday. They had to work around a window. The workmen were prompt, courteous and careful as they brought the materials up to our unit. My father observed them the entire time and said they were fine craftsman, taking care to do everything just right. He even learned a few new tricks (which says a lot for a 60+ handyman type!). Now, at the end of the day, their van got booted (meaning I advised them to park in a bad spot). We were glad to pay the fees, as it was my fault, but the company said they would pay it. Wow! We are so happy that we hired Room Dividers to build a wall for us. We called them right on the 24th of December, came in their office/ showroom to actually see the sample of the wall and doors (we would like to see them before making the final decision). And it's amazing that they would be able to schedule to do it 2 days later, 12/26. We were sooo excited!!!! The cost is very reasonable to compare with other company. $1150 (cash) for a 7'x9' wall with a pocket door. The pocket door is absolutely a plus for us, since it looks neatly and save so much space. We shopped around 3 or 4 others before deciding to go with Room Dividers. And we are soooo happy that we did it. The team are very nice and professional. They came in on time and it took them less than 3 hours to do everything, including painting to match the color of the existing walls. Inquired about an install of a 115"x 135" wall to which i was given a quote of $950+tax. Upon emailing back to confirm this rate and schedule an install I was told that rates have since been increased and they would not honor the rate that was given to me; even though no where in the email does it state that the rate is subject to change or that they are int he process of raising their rates. My roommate and I used Room Dividers for a temporary pressurized wall. It was fine while it was up but when she moved out we had the wall taken down. Unlike the review by Grace, they did not repaint the ceiling. And they broke a wooden windowsill that was up against the pressurized wall. It took me a million calls to get the owner to agree to send someone out to fix it and when they came all they did was try to paint over the cracked wood - as if that would cover anything up! I looked around for a company to divide a very large room in my apartment into two rooms and got a number of quotes. Room Dividers NY had the best price and I was able to schedule an appointment easily. Two men showed up on time and promptly loaded everything in. It seemed impossible that they would be able to build a t-shaped wall with two doors and a sliding window in between before 5pm which is the deadline for doing work in my coop. They worked diligently finishing just short of 5pm. They followed my floor plan exactly and the rooms look even better than I envisioned. I had done my research on pressurized walls, so I was aware that they are not perfect-there are some minor gaps where the walls meet the radiator that I will fill in with heat resistant foam and it's not quite as finished looking as it would be if I had hired a carpenter for permanent walls. But this took about 6.5 hours, cost a fraction of the price and can be removed if I decide to sell my apartment and the new owner doesn't want the wall. I had a great experience with this company. They were incredibly responsive, sometimes answering my email immediately, and have a useful tool on their site to create an exact floorplan. I was also able to pay by credit card on their site which was a plus. I would definitely recommend them. My only suggestion for them is to offer low voc paint at a higher price. I usually use it when I paint to reduce the paint smell and forgot to mention it in this case so it will take a while to air out. If low voc is a concern I would suggest mentioning this ahead of time or perhaps painting it yourself. read more

Very impressed! Setting up installation was easy & painless, and customizing the partition itself was great (I wanted extra shelves, two bookcases side by side, etc). Pressurized walls are technically illegal in many buildings, and Room Dividers offers enough alternatives. I compared prices between a couple companies and this one was definitely the most cost-effective. My partition was taken down today, and I'm happy to report there were no scratches or holes at all left on my walls/floor/ceiling.
