I went to Rooney's with a big group. We ordered a bunch of appetizers (fried calamari, bbq pork ribs, tuna bruschetta, and Brussels sprouts) to keep the price low. I also ordered a New England Clam Chowder for myself. All the appetizers we ordered were flavorful. The bbq pork ribs had a nice kick to them. My only gripe is with the Brussels sprouts which were a bit soggy. Cocktails were reasonably priced (~$10, $11 each) and strong so you definitely get the bang for your buck. I was surprised by how much I liked The Misunderstanding. If you like ginger beer, there's a good chance you'll also like it We sat indoors because there was a terrible heatwave, but we were still able to enjoy a view of the beach. I'm taken aback by the average overall Yelp rating for Rooney's. Speaking for my friend and I, we had a positive first time experience. She suggested Rooney's since we were specifically going to be by Long Branch beach and our goal was to enjoy good seafood with an oceanfront view. That's when Rooney's stepped in. Considering it was the Memorial Day weekend, it was nearly 3/4 filled when we arrived late afternoon. Rooney's is a large restaurant with 3 seating options--indoor, an enclosed beach view section or literally outdoors on the patio. We really wanted to eat outdoors but only if it were10 degrees warmer and not so windy. We sat in the enclosed beach view section and was lucky enough to be right by the window. The view was quite beautiful and we were anxious to indulge in a great seafood meal as we looked over the menu. There were many options from appetizers, burgers and raw bar to entrees, sandwiches and the fish board. At one point, we became indecisive but then quickly settled on some great choices due in part to the waiter's recommendation. Seafood dominates the menu so if you love it, you'll be in for a treat. Here is what we ordered to accompany our delicious Kris Pinot Grigio wine (along with a complimentary basket of pita chips and homemade hummus): Fried calamari--when it was first set on the table, I thought it looked over fried and would taste oily. Looks are deceiving because the appetizer was delicious. Warm and tender ringlets and tentacles of the squid served with a wedge of lemon and a side of marinara sauce. It was a good sizable portion--too bad we couldn't even finish it all! For main, we both decided on the Fish board. This was unique because you're able to customize your own entrée. Select a seafood (mahi mahi, shrimp, tuna, salmon, trout, branzino, local catch) then a cooking style (pan seared, grilled, blackened or broiled), then a sauce (lemon butter, sweet chili/garlic, salsa verde or angry sauce). Finally, 2 sides: either garlic mashed potatoes, broccoli, mashed cauliflower, wild rice, asparagus (extra $3.50 charge) or brussel sprouts (extra $3.50 charge). That's it. My friend ordered the salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and broccoli prepared broiled with lemon butter. My selection was mahi mahi, blackened (since I love spicy), with mashed cauliflower and broccoli florets with a side of the angry sauce. The fish was a good sized portion at 7 ounces. The Fish Board was highly recommended and I could see why---we enjoyed creating our platters with the ability to select vegetables and cooking style/sauces. The fish itself was ocean fresh and prepared well while all the flavors combined were exceptional. I enjoyed how the mahi mahi was seasoned nicely, perfectly cooked while still flakey. The mashed cauliflower was also a hit while the broccoli was tasty with a slight crunch to it but definitely not undercooked. There was a mishap as our entrees were being served to the table which was the waiter accidentally spilling the side sauce of my entrée on my lap. Even though I had the napkin over my lap, I had gotten some sauce on my never worn pants. This was slightly inconvenient and another waiter brought over club soda so that I could take care of my pants before any stains set in. I had to do this before eating. My friend and I thought that a complimentary dessert would have been a nice gesture. But didn't happen. In fact there was another accident at the table next to us as well. I believe there were so many patrons and it got pretty crowded that the waiters seemed to be bumping into one another at times. After our satisfying entrée (really stuffed at this point), we shared a Lavender Mint Crème Brulee. The waiter advised us to eat with caution since it was hot but it was actually cold in the middle through and through. Slightly disappointed with how that turned out, but we didn't feel like sending it back. If it were served warm, I'm sure it would have been more delicious! We noticed that the mint dominated the lavender flavoring. Despite a couple hiccups, I consider my experience and meal at Rooney's to be excellent. In my opinion, it had a lot to offer--delicious, well prepared food, stunning décor and atmosphere and good service. We spent a few hours and a decent amount of money but considered everything a very good value for all the food we ordered. I recommend and would definitely return again! read more

The Char Grilled Oysters is what we looked forward to most when returning the second time. They are delicious! Had excellent service both times with friendly staff. Did you know of the top 100 brunch spots in America, only one Jersey restaurant makes the cut? Obviously had to take my friends here. We tried some delicious cocktails including Rooney's Bloody Mary which was huge and came with a shrimp, a pickle and three olives (highly recommend). Tried the mussels and Nashville chicken thighs - both amazing. The fresh catch of the day was golden tilefish and you can get all fishes on the menu cooked any way you want with any sauce you like. I got mine pan-seared and with chimichurri. It was yummmm! We also tried the salmon, the beet salad, a burger - no complaints at all. I can't recommend Rooney's enough for the fresh seafood, the most spectacular ocean views and the live music (which is yet to come back but I hope it's soon this summer ) read more

We werent overly excited to come here given the 3 star rating, however, we were absolutely blown away. The ambiance, drinks and especially the food were a 10/10 today. Tequila spritz cocktail special with strawberry and prosecco. Absolutely perfect, not too sweet, great flavor, refreshing. Chopped salad, delicious! Would absolutely get again Manhattan clam chowder, perfect Angry lobster - this thing a beast. Huge, tons of meat and cooked to perfection. Absolutely fresh. A bit messy. Sat overtop of linguini in a chili garlic olive oil which was a great compliment. I have to say the beat lobster dish i have had. Amazing ambiance, food, and service. We made dinner reservations for my wife's birthday and had a great experience here. Our waitress McKenzie was amazing and her service was exceptional. They even had a birthday card on the table. My wife had the lazy poached lobster which was excellent! I went with the Brazilian lobster tail which was broiled to perfection (a rarity in most restaurants) with some awesome sides. My son had the wasabi tuna which was very tasty. We were frequently visited by Dan and Darryl who made sure everything was to our satisfaction. Coconut custard pie was on point as well. We plan on visiting again soon. We loved it so much we went back a second time for dinner last night! They are so accommodating to our family with two kids. The food was DELICIOUS and the view was stunning. Went Sunday night for dinner. I've been there dozens of times. Food and service are reliably very good. Unfortunately, this past Sunday, the wonderful ambiance was ruined by a guy came to the bar dressed up like a well known politician with a fake security man. He was loud, and distracted other patrons as well as the wait staff (some of the wait staff wanted pictures with this person). My girlfriend and I came down to the shore to enjoy the beach. After we were done, we looked up a restaurant by the beach, and Rooney's had great reviews on Google, so we decided to try it. As soon as we arrived, we were well greeted, the decoration looked nice, and the waitress acknowledged us promptly. My girlfriend asked the waitress if they could make a pineapple coconut mojito (a mojito with Malibu rum and pineapple juice), and the waitress said she would check. She came back with a "mojito," which was rum with mints and club soda. There was no lime in it nor the pineapple. So that was the first turn-off. Secondly, the bread was served very hard and dry; it seemed to be there for days, and even the butter was horrible. We decided to start with appetizers, so we ordered four pieces of the jumbo shrimp cocktail and Tuna Bruschetta. The tuna was subpar, and the presentation of the jumbo shrimp was carelessly done; it seemed that everything was thrown at the plate. After that, we decided to skip the entree. We told the waitress about the mojito, and she took it off our bill. So overall, the service was excellent, but I wouldn't recommend this place because the food and the drinks didn't have the quality we paid for. We don't mind spending money on good drinks and great dining experiences. So if you are looking for a nice view but horrible food, that's the place. Just not worth the value they charge. read more

This is for brunch. We usually go for New Year Day brunch as it's traditionally been a massive buffet. This year no buffet but Rooney's outdid themselves. We didn't realize the price fixed menu replaced the weekend brunch buffet. Massive amount of food ranging from French Toast to Pastrami cured salmon; a side of bacon, andouille sausage & potatoes, bread basket, oyster shooter & a tray of Cannolis, Biscottis, fresh strawberries & home made whipped cream. What a fabulous seafood-centric brunch to close out the summer. Dining outside with a view of the beach is gorgeous. Service was great. They have their own lot so parking was a breeze. The menus are all digital. We started with raw oysters and a round of drinks. Also got the truffle fries for the table. Everyone got something different but I believe we all got a spin on seafood. We started off with a dozen oysters and the chopped salad, both were fresh and tasty. For my dinner i ordered the halibut broiled with chimichurri sauce broccoli and smashed potatoes, my boyfriend got the broiled salmon with lemon butter and the same sides. "This is the best salmon I've ever had" was his review and I can say the same about my dish. My halibut was cooked perfectly (not too rare and not over cooked at all) and the sauce was incredible great portion size for the price. Our server was awesome as well. We were 2 couples who didn't cancel for New Year's Eve dinner. Rooney's was the perfect place on the water. It was not crowded but they did have a jazz band and adequate help. We were in a lovely room and it was quiet enough to hear our friends talk. The venue was elegant and festive for the celebration. The bar was gorgeous with TVs all above. The football games were playing. The live music was so soothing. Our waiter Chris was attentive to us and very patient because we wanted to spread our dinner out so we could celebrate at midnight. We had crusty warmed bread with drinks and lots of appetizers. Mussels, mozzarella sticks, stuffed artichoke and oysters. All were flavorful and hearty. After we ordered our entrees: Wasabi Panko tuna steak , skirt steak, Halibut and shrimp Arrabiata. No one had any complaints. Everything was fresh and delicious. We couldn't have picked a more elegant venue for a special dinner. We all had Cappuccinos and a pistachio tartufo to share. Thank you Rooney's for this lovely memory.
