Great Tex-Mex restaurant in Amarillo. We went on a Saturday right when they opened. The place wasn't busy but people consistently streamed in. I had a chicken burrito off the lunch menu. It was huge and tasty. They also have great salsas. Didn't get any drinks but they have a really good looking margarita menu. read more

The food at Abuelos is super good. I order three cheese enchiladas with sour cream sauce, rice and beans and they send home some chips and salsa with us. The service is super nice because if you ask for chips and salsa to go they'll send some home with you so you can use it for a snack. The ambiance is so good and idk why or what the word means. read more

Oh my goodness! This place is fantastic! We drove through amerillo and found this "little" gem. The service was fantastic and the food was magnificent! This place has some of the best salsa and naco cheese that I have ever tasted. The plates were massive and very filling, my boyfriend got the grande and I have the quesadilla. Both were delicious. An interesting thing they do is they put the cheese on the outside. I 100% recommend this place. read more

Food was absolutely amazing, my husband said they even cooked the steak perfectly to what he ordered. The inside of the building is beautiful and I loved the open space. Salsa was absolutely delicious and they have some for people who can't handle spice too! read more

Abuelo's ALWAYS hits the spot! This time I had the La Grandeza Frozen Margarita (house Margarita) and the Enchilada Platter (cheese enchiladas with Chile con carne). We were driving from CO to Austin and overnighted in town. We got takeout and it was good. We ordered from their website. We pulled up and they brought it to our car. A few years back I would have given Abuelo's a 5 star with no problem. But recently, many of their entrees (especially with chili con queso) have gotten much too spicy for me. I know the young people love it, so I understand. I just have to be much more selective when I order. read more

Slow hostess came in alone tried to persuade me to sit at bar , then told me that they had to bus a table which was not correct. Went over to a few other employees and were talking about me being alone . Waitress was nice and friendly. Overall would come back. But they need to treat business travelers not like creeps. read more

I had a party at the Event Center in September. I just want to say Abuelo's did a STELLAR job. Everything was perfect. It couldn't have run more smoothly. Sam, who is the Event Coordinator, was so communicative and nice and I'm so happy. If you need a place for a party, I highly recommend Abuelo's. The room was great. If you're running short on time, consider another place. Unfortunately after waiting 15 minutes and the host making zero effort to bus a table he was waiting for to seat us (family of 5), we ended up leaving. Also, the host was very unfriendly and couldn't have cared less. It was really the vibe from him & the extremely long wait when we were the only ones waiting that made us leave. Oh, and he seated 2 people that came in after us into a booth (that we could've fit in as 2 of our kids are small). So that was annoying. Anyway, good luck if you pick this spot. read more

First off we have been coming to this restaurant for many years. Last Friday night we had a party of 7 (not unusual to have large group). We got there at 7 pm at 7:50 we were still waiting. Went to check on issue. Meantime everyone before and after we arrived had been seated. The staff told me the manager Jarod would not put tables together as they had asked him to. So when I spoke to him and asked him. He told me he was working on it. In the meantime there is another party of 6 to be seated as well. On purpose he seating the party of 6 first and looked at us like I'll show you. The whole family was ready to leave at this time. We stayed. The waitstaff was great. Don't want anything from you just need to clean up attitudes. I understand staffing issues I work retail as well. To top it off we asked for the special bread pudding to go and it was horrible. I wasn't aware it was to have ice cream on it. I hope you can view this picture. It will be a while before we come back. read more

Off putting to start. It was a party of 2 and we went after the typical dinner rush of 6pm. It wasnt busy and half the tables werent filled and yet had to wait an hour to be seated. Then after seating we got drinks immediately. Then waited 20 minutes for the waitress to take the order. Then about half an hour for the food to come out. We ordered the taco plate and the 3 enchilada plate, 2 chicken, 1 beef. The enchilladas on the tortilla part was rock hard on the ends. It makes me think it sat in the window for far too long. the beef was alright aside from that but the chicken was extremely offputting. It was like the juice from refried beans was used in it and overall wasnt up the decent expectations. Waitress asked how the food was and I said it wasnt good. she brushed us off and laughed then left. Other wait staff had been seemingly listening to our conversation as one of them was standing behind us that I didnt even know how long he was there. Just felt incrediably off. Also when asked for to go boxes the waitress brought them then left again for about 10-20 minutes and finally came back with the check so we could leave. The total was 60$ and it wasn't very good. It was about 8:30 pm before we could leave. Will not be back. read more

We had a very disappointing experience with our recent visit. When we arrived, the restaurant was empty on a Friday night at dinner time. That should have been our first clue that we made a bad decision to go to Abuelos. The food has really gone down hill from the last time we were in. First, my son's Sprite was only carbonated water. When we asked for another one, the waitress explained that there wasn't anything she could do because it was on one system. Ok, fine I suppose. Next, my wife ordered an enchilada plate with eggs, but the eggs did not come out with the meal. They were finally sent out when everyone was nearly finished. The food itself was bland and tasteless. The charro beans seemed over cooked or that they had been sitting out for a while. The papas tasted like premixed mash potatoes with cheese. Even the chips and salsa were just ok, chips had been over cooked and the mild salsa was a bit more than ketchup. The service was mediocre. On top of all this, the food was very expensive, especially compared to other local favorites. With the myriad of other Mexican food options available, it is highly unlikely that we will be back for some time. read more

Our meal here was seriously delicious! Stopped in on our way through town and had the El Jefe margaritas, as well as the fajitas. Everything was super flavorful-- the grilled orange in the margarita was extra amazing. We will definitely be making this a regular stop when we come to Amarillo! read more

Tave our waiter anticipated our needs like a waiter at a Michelin star restaurant. The green verde salsa was best i have ever had. This place is the king of classic tex mex with all their dishes. Recommend to anyone who lives here or just traveling thru. Worth pulling off the I 40 for! read more

Horrible experience. Couldn't wait to try this restaurant so I went on my 50 th b day. Waiter was inappropriate with his remarks towards my son in law. And daughter. Food was horrible. Tasted like del taco. My bill was 68. $. I should of just gone to Del taco. The food would of cost me 1.50. And I wouldn't of had to put up with inappropriate remarks from a waiter. This place was the first I got to eat at in Amarillo since the whole pandemic situation had been going on. This place is so cool! I love how everything by is centered around the water fountain. The wall art and sound of the water fountain provide such environmental comfort and atmosphere. The dishes were so huge in portion. I think I each time I went I had enough food to have another meal at home. I love how they provide the shakers for their margaritas also. Definitely recommend them! read more

The margaritas were ok. But the wait was terrible. We went in at 12:50pm. We waited 15 minutes before drink orders. Another 20 minutes before getting our order in. 30 minutes before our food came out. Kid's chicken was cold and over cooked, tortilla soup had a hot bowl but cold soup, and remaking food had various levels of being hot to cold on the same plate. Probably our last time to go here. But the margaritas were ok. A little expensive, but ok. read more

This is a very hit or miss restaurant. Sometimes the papas and beans are the perfect side dish and other times, they are so crusted onto the plate from the heat lamp, that you can't even take a bite of it. Way too much mixer in the margs for my taste. Tacos were good except for the brisket in one, which still had the membrane in it. Yuck. Be sure to order chips without salt, because it seemed like they dumped the entire shaker in a basket. Even if you like salt, it's way too much. The bartender did provide us with fresh, unsalted chips (she was great, by the way). Got the bill and was charged full price for the marg. The manager refused to do anything even after I told her that they should honor what they told us, which the bartender fully admitted to. The manager made excuses rather than own up to their mistake. We come through Amarillo periodically, but that's the last time I give my money to this location.

Visiting my girlfriend and her family in Amarillo led me to trying some of their favorite places in…read morethe city. My girlfriend's mom was especially excited to take me to El Tejaven while I was visiting. This dinner was a celebration of my girlfriend's sister playing in the top All-Region orchestra. It has nothing to do with the food itself, but I want to mention it because she did a great job performing and I think it deserves to be remembered here. It is the reason we went in the first place. It was a busy night at El Tejaven before we arrived. A group of 32 was just wrapping up dinner. Thirty two people. At that point, just cater, dawg. It took about 20 minutes after arrival to get seated, but it likely would have been much quicker if it were not for a group that size. Once we were seated, we were served chips and salsa. The salsa was spicier than I was prepared for, but it was good. The chips were excellent as well. Most people at the table ordered margaritas on the rocks, while I got a dressed Dos Equis on draft. From what I tasted, the margaritas were solid. For appetizers, we ordered the small queso and the small ceviche. The queso was standard but good. The ceviche, on the other hand, was exceptional. I could have eaten a large bowl by myself. I was pretty hungry, so I ordered the Orden de Tacos, which comes with four tacos on corn tortillas. I got all of them with al pastor. I also added a side of rice and beans, which normally comes with the three taco order but can be added on for the four tacos. The tacos were very good and exactly what you want from street style al pastor, especially with the cilantro and onions. It comes out to roughly four dollars per taco if you do the math. The rice and beans were both great and I ate all of it easily. The plate also came with a side of guacamole that had a nice kick, which I enjoyed. Living in Austin with family in San Antonio, it is easy to find good and authentic Mexican food. That does not always seem to be the case in Amarillo, so it is nice to know there is at least one spot in the city that feels authentic and not overly gringoified. My girlfriend's family knows ball.
