the sign used front says "nothing fancy, just good food." i tend to agree. located in a small town off I-40 and on the famous Route-66, i knew when we pulled up we had found something special. you walk into an unassuming and small dining room. we were quickly greeted with warm chips and fresh salsa. additional hot verde and roja are available-- don't miss the verde! we had a daily special sirloin and fries on the american side, and a relleno and a taco from south of the border. we only came in for a snack along the way but this turned into a full dinner. portions large but not ridiculous. they serve beer and rita's but we were on the road so stuck with aqua. we got out for less than $20. we came in at six or so and were the only ones here, and left half an hour later to a quickly filling dining room. it's a small place, but don't miss it on your way west! read more

I liked this local place. Our server was probably new. She messed up on our order and another tables order while we were there and another couple walked out while waiting to be acknowledged. Divey little highway joint (in a Good way! This is what I look for) local loves. The fried avocado was really good, but it was supposed to be shredded beef and it came out with ground beef (huge damper) I didn't bother saying anything. We stopped at Rooster's for lunch, not having looked up the posted reviews. It was primarily Mexican food, but with other selections as well. It was Sunday noon, and they were doing a good business. My wife had a simple enchilada plate, but I couldn't resist several rather unique offerings. I settled for a "stuffed avocado" plate, which I had never seen anywhere else. It proved to be a wonderful choice! There were 2 large avocado halves, topped with ground beef, lettuce, etc., fried in a light batter, and an enchilada, with small portions of rice and beans, all covered with a choice of sauces. It was delicious! The chips were warm and crisp, and I wondered if they were homemade. The salsa was very tasty and quite hot, but after a few mouthfuls we got used to it. It was a little on the expensive side, I guess, but not that much, and it was much better than the usual warmed over offerings you get at most Mexican restaurants. Rooster's is a great place to eat in Vega. I went on Sunday after church and it was super busy. The plates before us were not cleared for about 10 minutes because there were few people working there. Our group of 6 stopped here for dinner and to overnight (at Bonanza) on our cross country road trip from St. Louis to San Diego. We enjoyed it throughly. The food was very good, steak was tender and flavorable and the Mexican dishes offered a lot of variety and were all yummy. Even better, the people there were friendly and may us feel at home. Went in close to closing time (8pm), and offered to find another place to eat. We were told no problem, and there was another group of diners who hadn't been served yet. They were out of the first 3 items I ordered, and I wasn't ordering anything strange. Finally settled on a beef taco and chile relleno ala carte. The server didn't know what ala carte meant, so I explained it to her. That should have tipped me off that we were about to experience poor service. After delivering the food - including the crustiest relleno I had ever seen - the server never returned to the table. I went up to the register to order a second beer, and mentioned to the server that we would appreciate her stopping by the table. Nothing. I didn't see another employee anywhere. I finally called the restaurant on my cell to request someone come to our table! Our server still didn't return - instead the other server brought us our check. We will never return, and the only reason for 2 stars was the tasty beef. Hoped for better. read more

Have always enjoyed Rooster's and evrything has always been top notch. This time however...Went on Tuesday for happy hour with free calf fries. Crowded but not too much. Found seat, waitress came and took drink order. Asked for calf fries and green sauce for chips. Took awhile but got a small basket of calf fries. Ordered barbacoa plate. Didn't bring green sauce. Asked again. Finished beer, got second asked for more calf fries and green sauce. Took awhile, brought second small basket of calf fries. Told us they were out of barbacoa. Ordered two specials. Asked for green sauce 3rd time. Finally got plus brisket tacos. Asked for third basket of calf fries and told they were out. Waitress erased board with specials as they were out. See a trend here? It was 30 minutes after happy hour started when we got there. Not a huge crowd. Two waitresses. So not many calf fries. Ask for a full basket up front. Ask if they have what you order up front. Ask for green sauce up front and remind until you get it. Food ok as always. Service not so much. read more

Oh my Goodness. This is some of the best Mexican food I ever had. Their menu had a good variety. The chili rellano stuffed with Chicken and covered in red sauce, paired with a chicken enchilada with the sour cream sauce is extremely tasty. The service was excellent and very friendly. We went into Roosters and stood there for 5-10 minutes in the entry way. The waitress looked at us. The cooks looked at us. No one acknowledged us and there were tables that could've been cleared for us. They just wouldn't serve the out of towners. The service was on point, even though the kitchen was struggling. Their chips and white queso are pretty damn good, and their rice is some of the best I've had in a while. But man, the kitchen is so, so slow. It took nearly half an hour from order time to delivery time, and there were at most 6 tables in the place. My order was wrong, but well prepared. I can't complain about flavor, the flavor on everything was good, even though I wasn't a huge fan of the enchiladas. After having the price of my order corrected I showed the manager in charge my Yelp check in and the 10% off coupon I got for checking in. His response was "I don't know anything about that." So, they don't honor Yelp discounts for checking in. Just in case you were excited about getting 10% off. read more

We happened by this place on a road trip as a last minute place to grab some dinner. We walked in about an hour before closing and were greeted and seated immediately. Service was quick even though the waitress looked like the only one taking orders, delivering drinks, etc. We made our order and it was brought out to us quickly. That's when we had our only real issue. Two of the 4 plates we ordered came out incorrect. However, the waitress was super apologetic and made one of them right immediately. We didn't mention the second one, but my wife and I agreed that it turned out for the better. The dish we got was absolutely delicious. May I recommend getting their white queso on ANYTHING you get the option for. It was amazing. We ended up with the stuffed sopas instead of the flautas and it was the right way to go. All of the other food was delicious as well and the prices are definitely fair. Did I mention we were out of there in less than 45 minutes? That's gold level efficiency for a sit down dinner when trying to drive halfway across the country. I would go back there anytime and recommend it to anyone. read more

We were surprised to find such great Sonoran Mexican food in such a remote area. We are from Southern California and used to have great Mexican food. Can't come out here every time, but this was really good. It really surprised us. The owner was very gracious and came around to make sure everything was OK. Our server was fun and attentive.
