Almost 100 years old, probably needs to change what doing. The rooter had very little flavor. The root beer float is served in rather small styrofoam cups. The hot dogs were very poor quality meat. The house "chile sauce" is basically ketchup with a small amount aof something unrecognizable mixed in. It is a true drive-inn and have friendly carhops and t-shirts for sale. So you know those places you went to as a kid and hold a fond memory so no matter what they are awesome? The Root Beer Stand is one of those places for me. I am not talking about 5 star food here but its nostalgic to me and so many memories as a child that no matter what, it will always be great. When I was a kid you could go up there and get a root beer in this little mugs that were miniature versions of a beer mug, I always thought I was so cool drinking out of those. I don't think they have those anymore but seriously if they did I would order a small one just for the memory. I always order the chili dogs, which is not the top chili you'll ever get with dehydrated onions (if you want them) but again... I love it for the nostalgia. The buns are steams which I actually really love. They are not giant hot dogs so even for me it takes like two sections to down 2 hot dogs, but I am always in such a hurry to eat them. The Root Beer Stand is such a big part of Kalamazoo and Portage history that while in town (and it's not winter) you have to stop in. We have been going to the Root Beer Stand since my daughter was a toddler (she's 40 now!) When she was little, we loved to throw popcorn on the hood and watch the birdies eat the popcorn! When we go, I still have to share part of my hot dog bun with the birdies for memory's sake! Every summer we make sure we take a trip to the Root Beer Stand for chili dogs and "burp beer"! I know a lot of people don't like the chili sauce on the hot dogs -- is it the best in town -- no! They do use Kosher hot dogs -- I have to give them that, but they do look like they have been sitting in hot dog water for awhile. I always order "light onions" because the onions are the little sliced cubes and they tend to spill in the vehicle. My husband gets the ham and cheese sandwich, and he likes that. Of course, we always have to get a large root beer each. It is truly the experience and the memories for us -- not the dogs. read more

Very disappointed. The chili was extremely watered down and no flavor. My wife get the ham and cheese and I'm pretty sure the cook just waved the cheese applicator over her sandwich. The chili on these hotdogs was by far the worst chili I have ever tasted. It was basically just pure ketchup and tomato paste. It was lacking salt, meat, or any flavour but tomato. Both were extremely skinny small hotdogs. The chili is more like a glorified Ketchup with barely any meat in it. The root beer was good, but they don't offer a diet version They don't sell fries, just popcorn or small bags of chips. The prices are extremely cheap. Maybe that adds to its charm It was a place to go to once, to try it out. But I doubt I will ever go back.
