They are now the place I try and go even if it's slightly more, simply because of the kindness, camaraderie and knowledgeable staff. Deb was able to forward me to a site to pull product numbers.  Once provided, she assembled the order within 24 hours and I was called when it was ready to pick up.   Pick up took about 5 minutes.  My order was loaded on a flat and someone helped me load the car.  I appreciated the efficiency of the transaction. read more

I've rode my bike past this little shop a few times and often planned on stopping. Today I had my chance, and I had my three year old daughter with me. We were both excited to check out another local garden supply store and this one looked pretty nice. The shopkeeper was on the phone when we pulled up and I heard him say "Can I call you back, I have a customer," which I thought was very cool, but then he proceeded to be rather stuffy and cold when I began asking questions. I thought there was a nursery on Williams street that had the name of Roots also and was wondering if they were affiliated. He seemed to be a little put off by that and looked up the place on the internet and pointed out to me that I was incorrect. Fair enough. I wandered around and looked at the mostly greenhouse oriented fare, but also with a decent selection of soil amendments, trying to chat with the shopkeeper and my daughter. I must admit, I was in a very good mood, the day was beautiful, my daughter was beautiful, the whole wonderful day was ahead of us and I was feeling gregarious and fun. This was apparently not the correct way to be in this store. I came across a bottle of... I couldn't quite make it out because there was a price tag obscuring part of the bottle. It looked to me like it said "TCP Booster," and while I assume it was actually "TOP Booster", I said, "Wow, I bet this TCP Booster flies off the shelves". The shopkeeper stopped dead in his tracks and said, "I'm sorry I don't know what that is. What is TCP?" I replied, "Well, you know, it's the psycho-active portion of marijuana." At this point he pointed at a mess of paperwork behind his desk and said, "It's illegal to talk about marijuana and I'm going to have to ask you to leave." At this point I laughed a bit and continued looking around. The shopkeeper said that he wasn't joking and that I had to leave to building. I was dumbstruck, but I gathered up my daughter and we walked out of the shop. This all took place in Portland, Oregon, where it is legal to have pot if you have a medical marijuana card, and as far as I know it is not illegal to mention marijuana in casual conversation, or even intense conversation. This gentleman led me on by asking "What is TCP?" and when I explained, proceeded to kick me out of his establishment. I'm not sure what their policy is on saying taboo words within the confines of their establishment, but a sign out front telling you to leave your first amendment rights at the door would be nice, or perhaps the shopkeeper could tell everyone right when they walk in not to joke about "the evil plant", while he puts his tightly clenched fingers to his lips and glares at you while he simulates puffing on a joint. Needless to say I am not going to go back without and explanation and an apology. I don't want my gardening supplies shopping to feel like the "No Free Speech" zone at the airport where talking about bombs will get you tackled and treated like crap. UPDATE: Hah, stupid me, I was corrected by the store owner that it's of course THC, not TCP that is in marijuana. Well, there you go, confusion begets confusion. I still think the proprietor should have let me know that it was not allowed to talk about the evil weed in his store, rather than booting my ass out. And if I had continued to speak of this devil plant? Then I certainly would have deserved getting kicked out. Ignorance of the law is no excuse, they say. But ignorance of the DEA's arbitrarily designated "no say" list in hydroponic stores? Come on. I didn't even know it was a "hydroponic" shop in the first place. It's called "Roots Garden Supply" for christs-sake. Whoops, can I not say "christ"? Hope I don't get kicked off the internet. Last Update: Well, I gave the proprietors an opportunity to apologize for my mistreatment and they decided to go on the offensive. My perception of a good business is one that is aware that their patrons might not be aware of all the laws that are pertinent to their particular business, and to be a little flexible with that knowledge. Another thing I look for in a decent business is professionalism in dealing with disgruntled patrons. I got neither of these with Roots. I wish them the best of luck, but if they continue to treat people with this kind of disrespect I don't expect them to last very long. read more

Someone once asked me "Are you a shower, or a grower?" Well, when it comes to plants, at least, I'm definitely a grower. Our little garden out back has in years past played host to peppers, tomatoes, beans, tomatoes, kale, tomatoes, collards, tomatoes, raspberries, and more tomatoes. Seriously, something about tomato plants... they love our soil. The unstoppable Hilary B is the impetus for most of this, but I do have to say that without my watering and planter-box-building skillz, we wouldn't have what we do today. And fortunately to this point, we have gotten everything we need (starts, compost, etc) from local nurseries. Recently my mom (a much more average gardener than I) got her hands on some hydroponic/outdoor natural liquid plant food she liked, ran out, and then couldn't find any in her hood. She asked me to grab some for her here, and Roots came through as one of the few places that actually had what I was looking for. So I made my way up to N Interstate and found a well-stocked shop full of everything an avid indoor gardener could need. A huge selection of liquid nutrients and fertilizers, all sorts of equipment that I'd have no idea what to do with, and a couple of friendly guys running the shop. They got me what I needed and even threw me a discount even though I didn't have a frequent buyer account. Cool stuff. I look forward to heading back in some time soon as I seek knowledge on what organic nutrients I could add to my soil to get things growing even faster. It's gonna be a short summer, and I sure as hell would like to maximize my pepper production! read more

Probably a great place for people interested in growing one type of crop specifically. I'm not interested in that type of crop and found the experience too awkward and the prices too expensive for my outdoor gardening purposes. Too bad, this place is easy walking distance for me. I do have to say, though, that the fact they made a stone-facade 70's building look cool is truly remarkable. That's worth one star alone. read more

I really enjoy the space it is bright and inviting . The staff is super friendly and willing to go the extra mile to provide excellent customer service. You don't even have to ask for help carrying heavy items to your car they offer ! This is a locally owned business with a owner that really cares about the business and customers . Just stopped in today and got exactly what I was looking for. In a town with so many (though very nice) superficial boutique "nurseries" it's nice to have a shop in this neighborhood to get this kind of larger/utilitarian supply. Admittedly, I did check out Fred Meyers down the street before I made my purchase, but to Roots' advantage I can say that they were actually less expensive than Freddy's, and not at all corporate evil! If yelp had a negative star option I'd use it for Roots. My experience with Roots was a new low in "customer service". They won't stand behind their products and, in my case blamed me. I called the mfg. and their rep. said he'd never seen anything like the photos I showed him!? If you want to deal with a anything for a dollar company these guys are for you. Otherwise don't waste your time or money with these overpriced hacks. I should have know who I was dealing with when I saw they had a shelf full of General Hydroponics products a full 2 years after Monsanto (the planet killer) bought the GH company. Shame on you Roots. Best grow store I've ever shopped at. All the staff are very nice, well educated, and always take time to answer questions. And also not in a know it all or condescending manner, actually but genuine . Prices are competitive, and store is always well stocked. If they don't have it, they can usually have it there by the next day. I love their selection of organic products, makes my shopping easy. Instead of having to go to multiple locations, they have what I need all under one roof. I've never had a bad experience and have been shopping here since 09'. That speaks volumes. read more

Love this place, stopped in about a year ago for a big super soil recipe I had researched about and they helped me every step of the way! Great prices and recently I called in for some advice regarding reusing soil for fruits and veggies and they had great advice and a friendly demeanor most employees don't have when being asked a question over the phone that is no way profitable. I've been coming here for years.. Yes some random employees are not the brightest but many more make up for it. Neil and rich are great and the business is well stocked or will order what you need. Deliver prices aren't bad at all compared to other places. The prices are a bit high but I think you get what you pay for with the service and knowledge of the employees.. read more

The people that work hear are down right the dumbest people i have ever tried to work with. I think everyone there is either stupid high or just stupid uneducated. I tried to use a business acount card with the business name on it and was told they would not take it because the name on the card (business name) did not match the name on my id. funny thing is my name is not the business name. God you guys are so so dumb. When i called and asked for the manager the employee called me a bitch. Take it from me do NOT shop here this place sucks and on top of super bad customer service they dont give a discount like ever EVERY other hydro shop in town. Favorite garden store within 30 miles. Not only did they hook me up with free samples for my 1st grow (which had great results), they gave me a discount on the few products I did buy, and took more than an hour out of their day to talk with me about my grow issues. 5 of the employees stopped what they were doing to talk with me! And they even examined a plant sample under a microscope to confirm a certain pest. Such great guys. I've had terrible experience with all the other ships around and I drive 20 miles just to go here. read more

Do not go in there on a Monday I've been going into roots for 2 years they've been very good the last couple of months I've noticed the employees losing weight being very very short with me they sold me a CO2 tank today told me to calm down I was the first customer in there because I had asked for it they were not open at 10 and I walked into the door was open and the gate was open and they are rude to me these guys are assholes they care only about themselves I was dressed nice nobody else was they sold the CO2 tank to the guy behind me there was one left but they pretended to sell it to me and I left thinking I had a full one just to spite me. This is unfair I did not think I even offered to give the right of way and offer the customer a ride to the closest store to get a CO2 tank yet these people told me to calm down overreacting to me just replying that I think I should be entitled to that CO2 tank since I was here 15 minutes before you open so then they pretended to sell me the tank took my money and sold it to the guy that was there after me smiling at my face I called them back and they said yeah I sold it to the guy after you and I said why and he said we're getting more and soon I said I've been working with you for a long time I'm sorry you're such an a****** I will never do business again with you I think you have some personal problems all they kept saying is Monday Monday Monday so I guess the customers that go in there on Monday if you're dressed nice or you or you're looking better than them expect to be treated like s*** come out to Lake Oswego looking like that try to run a business like that in another place Step It Up roots read more
