Can't believe this was my first visit in all my years of Portland gardening (!) great place - crammed with an amazing selection of plants/ veggies/ shrubs/ perennials as well as annuals for all sorts of growing conditions. Came for the large bags of organic rose fertilizer, couldn't resist plants I've been considering ( reintroducing after the harsh winter we had a couple years back)... I purchased a gardenia last Feb. , 2 months ago and it has not been doing well. The leaves are upside down, the edges are curling and several edges are brown. I have returned to the store a couple times to discuss these issues but I repeatedly got told it will get better as the weather gets warmer, I need to water more, etc Bringing it back was not encouraged. Well it hasn't improved. I sent an email so I could fully explain and provided photos. I didn't receive a response. So I called the Holgate location and Christine answered. I ended up holding for about 25 min. but she called me back and apologized. She was quite accommodating and didn't even wait for a full explanation. She asked me to bring it back and mentioned that she'll leave a note for everyone to know that she had authorized this. When we brought the gardenia back staff told us that we can only have store credit and not a refund. I asked to speak to Christine and after a wait Tony came instead. He was hostile and was trying to normalize the sick plant, giving reasons like, it's from the freeze, it needs watered, which is all not true. He was intimidating telling me that I was rude on the phone. I challenged him on that because that also is not true. He softened his stance when I told him Christine apologized to me. Finally we asked for our money back and he complied, giving me a sick grin while handing me my money. I've been a customer for 36 yr. After this, I'm no coming back. read more

My last boss purchased a gift card to Tony's Garden Center for me as a parting gift. I think he just typed "gardening Portland" into Google since he knew I liked gardening and since he's not from here and therefore not familiar with any nurseries. I hadn't really heard of Tony's before receiving this gift so I wasn't sure what to expect. But this place is awesome! Quite large, rivaling Portland Nursery's size, with a wide variety of plants. They have a section for natives towards the front, discounted plants that need some TLC right by the door, many many greenhouses for younger or indoor plants, lots of bigger trees to choose from - but they don't break the bank! I spent the whole gift card (hehe) but I'd love to come back here to keep an eye on their stock and add to my yard and houseplant collection. read more

Warning: Do not get this place confused with Tony's Tavern in NE Portland! I was trying to take an Uber to the other Tony's but ended up at this one by mistake. This is a Garden Center not a bar. However, the staff was very accommodating and although they would not serve me a drink on account of me being under 21, I ended up leaving with a house plant and a smile. I give them 5 Stars, but it really felt more like a 4.5 Star place because they were not selling Schlitz Cocktails. Update: since people are asking, a Schlitz cocktail is a can of Schlitz beer served with whipped cream and a cherry on top. It is my favorite beverage for when I've been a good boy and I want to treat myself. Try it sometime! But you'll have to do it at a different Tony's, not at this one. The staff at Tony's has always been friendly and super helpful. If they aren't sure about something they will call Tony or get him over to answer your need. Their selection which of course waxes and wanes depending on season and if they get sold out is most often very plentiful of choices at good prices. Want tomato plants? Let's say they are 4.5...not a 4. Huge, huge selection. Don't be afraid to visit the greenhouses towards the back of the property. We went basically for annual flowers. Almost too many choices! The plants were beautiful. This is our first year in Oregon, so I cannot comment on plant longevity. People in the front area were very helpful as were the check-out person. Picked up a bag of wild flower seed also...hard to find otherwise. It's a great place to wander, look, get ideas. Don't be afraid of the crowds as there is plenty of space for everyone. Why the .5 pt off of a 5? Prices are a little higher than I expected. Still, we will be back! read more

This is a really cool garden center. We were just there looking for vegetable plants, got some beautiful kale and lettuce plants. Take a look at my photos, they've got large shrubs, flowers, trees... just about all kinds of plants for your yard or garden. Their catnip is so fine, it has to be kept in a metal cage, cause the local cats come and eat it. You can't make this stuff up! We noticed some of their items were less expensive than those at Freddy's. They deliver large items, check for details. Nice people working there, they immediately asked if we needed assistance, very friendly. Even if you didn't want to buy, it's worth seeing all the cool plants and flowers! We've been coming here to buy (myself) Mother's Day flowers for my porch. They have Buy 2 get one free hanging planters. They're more like something you'd find elsewhere for $75 value or more! They are HUGE! The first 3 we bought last year, could have lasted until frost, but we left for a vacay . . . and trusted our youngest to come take care of our house, and neglected our hanging plants! But, that's not Tony's fault, and we will continue to buy flowers from him. read more

Tony's was a really great find! One wouldn't think that finding plain, ordinary compost would be so challenging, but Tony's has several varieties front and center as you enter at very reasonable prices. Shopper: July 2021. I love Tony's, but found it unprofessional for the younger staff to talk smack about customers in front of other clientele. They also gave a person a hard time for "not hearing them". Poor customer service in my eyes. Also, a lot of standing around the cash register chatting instead of helping shoppers. I had to wait in line, when they were not busy, just wanted to get assistance. From what I saw this morning, a lot of getting paid to stand around and cop an attitude with customers. Fantastic selection and reasonable prices. Bought four hanging geranium baskets last year and they even survived through the winter. Look great on the front patio for a second summer. I was buying a large amount of a ground cover (180 plants), and Tony's gave me a break in price ($3.75/plant, compared to $4.49/plant at Portland Nursery) because I was buying so many. Neither Portland Nursery nor Tony's had the plants in stock, but Portland Nursery said they would put them on their "wish list" and might be able to get me the plants in the next 60 days; Tony's had them ready for me to pick up in 5 days. Also, the woman I spoke to on the phone was super-friendly and helpful. I went to Tony's on the recommendation of my gardener, and I can see why he recommended them. I'll definitely be back! read more
