This place is much larger than it appears on the outside. They've made great use of the space. Tons of gift items, some are gardening related and some not. The native species that they have is a very expanded collection. You can find virtually anything that might be of interest to you. They also had a tremendous selection of soil types so again, you can get just about anything you might want. The parking is limited, but there is some street parking available as well. The prices seem on the high side, but the quality is high as well. Very helpful young person offered assistance. read more

Updated review time! I've been a Garden Fever customer since roughly 2004. They were amazing then. They are amazing now! Two years ago, the original owners retired. They sold their operation to a former employee and spouse. And I'm pleased to report that Garden Fever is as fabulous as ever! Things I love ... The "new" Garden Fever has expanded their native plant and herb selections--woo hoo! Also, the "new" Garden Fever is--or at least it seems to me--offering more free classes and workshops. For instance, last fall/winter, I attended a truly stupendous, free class on how to care for mason bees. Spoiler alert: mason bees are work than you think--and totally still worth it! They also are maintaining all the things I've always loved, such as a fabulous, curated selection of seasonal annuals. Gorgeous shade perennials. And gorgeous sun perennials as well. I often buy my veggie and herb starts there, too, as they often carry some of the weirder/cooler varieties. So many thanks and appreciation and love to both the original owners and the new ones. One of my favorite garden shops in Portland. They are smaller, but often have a broad selection of plants. Today, they had a huge variety of witch hazels, more than other local nurseries. Also a good selection of camellias. If you're looking for a house plant, don't forget to go to the upstairs loft. Wow, what a very bad and unwelcoming experience I had today in this place. Walked in to inquire about bamboo health and best care questions, gentleman up at the counter said he will call one of his other coworkers to assist me up in the garden area, so I walked up there and waited. Finally this one lady walk up and ask me what I needed, I began to explain some of my issues and while I was in the middle, she cut me off and told me to go somewhere else for advice. I was taken aback by this response and it was rude and dismissive, so much so, that one of the other workers there heard her and began to give me advice on what I was inquiring about. I know for a fact he could hear the bad customer service she was giving me. This next part might make some of you feel uncomfortable, but I am a person of color and this whole vibe felt like she didn't want me there. Hard to explain, but if you have loved ones that are BIPOC or you are, you know what I am talking about. She just glared at the young man that intervened as if to say, leave us alone. He did back away and I could tell he really wanted to help me. I did purchase some items and checked out. I am a repeat customer and had good experiences here previously, but not today. This store is under new ownership from the last time I was there. I'm interested in all thing house plant and they have it all. They have a very wide variety of plants, including a variety I'd been looking for. The staff is knowledgeable, friendly and quickly found a product I didn't know the name of, only the function. They also have many pots, many handmade, and also gifts like flower-related puzzles, cards, etc. They provide the conditions tropical house plants want--warmth and humidity downstairs and upstairs the drier conditions for succulents. I first came upon this plant haven when I was shopping for a peace lily, and the shop by my house only had one plant available at the time (plus it seemed like it was priced pretty high for the medium size it was). I called Garden Fever, and a very helpful, friendly woman offered to set aside any of the 3 types of peace lilies they had on the floor, also providing me each of their sizes and price. I promptly went to go pick one out and was pleasantly surprised with their selections. I chose one of the Domino Peace Lilies that was actually bigger and $10 less than the one I found at my local shop. It has easily become my favorite plant in the house. I love how strong and healthy it is, and the roots are beautiful! I picked up a couple other small plants, a small watering can, soil, some bamboo sticks and some decorative glass for my clear vases -- all on the same trip. Kid in a candy store, I was! This is obviously a superb one-stop shop with a lot of options and pleasant associates around. The last time I was in though, I selected a Pachira money plant. A couple of the leaves are damaged, but it was the only Pachira they had, and it was just too cool to pass up. I asked a male associate if I should be worried about the damage when I went up to the checkout, but he said it was "just" mechanical damage. Still not exactly sure what that means, but I thought it was a little odd that they don't offer to discount such things. He also told me that these plants like to be in dry soil and to only water every 2 weeks, draining each time. I also thought this was a little weird considering the humongous trunk, but listened to his advice for a couple of weeks. The soil just seemed way too dry to me, and the leaves were already curling when I purchased it, so I looked up the care instructions on my own online. Turns out Pachira's really like moisture, and you're supposed to water them far more often, keeping their soil moist. The leaves curling means they are being underwatered. He was right about the draining, but I am a little peeved he gave me false information. I also have no idea if the damaged leaves will ever recover or heal -- that would be nice to know. Despite this most recent experience, I really love this shop and will continue to come here for a variety of greenery needs. I will just make sure to double-check the care instructions given to me moving forward. They just have so many beautiful, interesting plants in all shapes and sizes that I've never seen before. I was so hopeful when Livingscape took over Garden Fever. I absolutely love their shop on Vancouver, and have never felt rushed or less than welcome there, and the staff there always acknowledges me, says hi, and engages in conversation about plants. Unfortunately, "Livingscape friendly" has not yet taken root here (yep, pun intended). None of the outdoor staff acknowledge you when you walk by, and the inside staff, while smiley, definitely come across as anxious to get you out of there ten minutes before closing. I was there at 4:50 looking for something specific, and after walking by multiple employees outside, clearly searching for something (not dawdling or "browsing") I finally asked someone 8 minutes before closing. They made a point of saying they "close in about 5 minutes." So I just decided not to get what I was looking for. read more

This place is a great little gardening and nursery store with everything you need from plants to tools, garden décor and books. When my daughter had the planting bug, we came here. I've been to the store before, but for whatever reason, I really enjoyed it the last time I went. It looks small on the outside but it's a lot bigger on the inside. Everything is neat, tidy and laid out very smartly. One side of the store has gardening tools and various dirts. Upstairs, you can find gardening and home décor. The staff is helpful and friendly. My daughter got herself a few plants, a couple of pots and satisfied her gardening bug for now. They don't let kids under 13 years old in. Couldn't go in with our 4 year old. That has nothing to do with covid. Edit: To clarify, the reasoning is to stick to a number of customers in the store during covid restrictions. They were using an appointment system but now accepting walk-ins. I can respect small business doing what they need to to stay in business. And I'm all about covid guidelines. But I'm telling you right now, I'll let my wife and daughter walk in while I stand outside to keep numbers down. And no one drives more purchases than a 4 year old picking things out in a store to buy. So why the arbitrary age limit? Just say one per party. Or two per party. Seems like they were allowing more than one at a time when we were there. What if a family with 5 teenagers walks up? They all have purchasing power? A 13 year old can purchase something more than a 12 year old? The reasoning of a specific age doesn't really make sense. If you go make sure to call ahead to check their rules first. Seems like it was different than what their website says. They say they're changing the policy next week. Cool. Stay safe everyone! read more

I shop here all the time. High priced, but nice stuff and nice owners. Today, I had an unpleasant experience with an employee. I'd bought two clematises, one that I took to the cash register and another one that I'd seen on my way in and told them I would pick up on the way out. When I went to do that, I was told that the other clematises were set aside for someone else, and the employee asked me curtly if she could see my receipt. I showed it to her, and then she brought another clematis to my car that was not as nice as the one I'd bought. I asked if I could get another one, and she said she'd see and briskly walked off. I asked if I should wait at the door, and she said yes. No pleases or thank yous from this person. After I got home, I called and asked to speak to a manager. I told him the story. He seemed to know all about it, and said it was a misunderstanding. OK, the fact that the plants were already sold was a misunderstanding--the rudeness and lack of service were not. I know people are hurting for help these days, but I don't like being treated like a thief when I've just dropped over $150 at their business. read more

Terrible, I can't even say customer service because I would have had to have been acknowledged for us to even begin with the idea of service. I came in with my sleeping baby in a stroller and walked around the store looking for a house plant. I had some questions, but I couldn't get anyone to look my way let alone help me. I honestly wish I lived in this neighborhood so I could come here everyday haha everyone is so incredibly nice and they have such an incredible indoor and outdoor plant selection. I am exclusively an indoor plant collector at the moment because I don't have a yard haha and this place fits the bill. I called prior to my trip over asking about a particular plant (silver splash) and they had ONE left. I had seen about 5 of them a week before so I knew I was lucky that there was one left. If you are looking for seeds, plants, garden decorations, garden tools, boots, gloves, hats, planters, fertilizer, fountains, terrarium supplies, how to books, lanterns, etc, look no further. This is now one of our top choices to visit to add to and care for our ever-increasing brood of plants at our place. I thought we entered a tiny shop with some garden decorations and I was confused because he had definitely described the place as a nursery. Then we proceeded to the back. I was blown away by the diversity of their stock. Lots of signs describing exactly what everything is along and interspersed throughout the place were signs with tips on caring for specific plants with the crazy weather we have been having. Not only that, they have an informative board on DIY garden projects and offer classes. Great for a novice like myself. Everywhere we wandered, it was easy to spot a helpful employee in the event we had a question. One such employee even came to help carry my boyfriend's armful of plants up to the front so we could continue shopping unemcumbered. Let's just say the puppy dog eyes I got when discussing if we really NEEDED a Thai basil plant were unnecessary as soon as I saw the price. The prices are VERY reasonable here. I shop at local nurseries to avoid this kind of stuff but these are the same practices that the big box stores employ Small native plants section. It's basically a forgotten corner in the nursery which is unfortunate considering how vital native plants are to wildlife. This is the absolute closest "garden center" to me in my neighborhood. "Center" isn't quite the right word--this place is tiny, but jam packed with over-the-top-serious-gardener business. I am not an over-the-top gardener. I have a few expensive garden shears (mistreated) and the occasional bag of organic "soil amendments" might find it's way into my trunk--but really, I am just not die-hard enough to call myself a "serious" gardener. At least not yet. But I play like I am one, because I love flowers almost as much as I love food. Well, almost. My Portland backyard urban garden in the summertime is something to behold. No tidy, well clipped, manicured hedges for me--oh no! It's sprawling free-for-all, crazy assed wild plants and flowers all having an orgy and laughing and carrying on back there. You'd think I fed my garden beer, all the flowers are so darned happy and joyous. it's quite a party. I just plant stuff at random, then stand back and watch what happens to it. I love love love spending time back there in the oh-so-short Portland summertime. Seriously, what compares to sitting in the amazing garden that you planted, reading a trashy summer novel, while sipping a cool drink and watching hummingbirds and dragonflies and butterflies appearing at random intervals? Not much. Garden fever features an amazing selection of "special" plants--you know, the roses with brand new patents and crazy names and colors, and organic veggie starts, and crazy special trees. I love it--when you need something a little more out of the ordinary than the plain old petunias up at the Home Depot, come to Garden Fever. I would give them five stars, except they are too small and the prices just a tad high. But as far as serious gardening goes, I'll bet people who know what they are doing (and little old ladies with the real garden hat and $100 garden shears) would give 'em a five for sure. read more

Their prices are awesome for plants, soils, planters, garden tools, etc. We got some Orange Bell Pepper, Strawberries, Garlic, Jalapeno Peppers, and Blueberry plants here. We don't have much space for gardening, but we sure are trying to make our garden better than ever. Thanks to Garden Fever, we can afford to have a small and cute garden. I have been a customer at garden fever for 15 years. I recently bought an outdoor statue and within two week it broke. when I brought it back they accused me of causing the problem, rude, refused a refund and said they will replace it in 3+ months. They just lost a very loyal customer. read more

It's the one fever I don't want to get rid of. I get all giddy when it starts to look like spring because I know that I will make the trek across town to Garden Fever. On this last trek my son and I acquired strawberry starts (just 89 cents each) and a couple of seed packets. On previous trips I have delighted in such treats as: Heirloom tomatoes Potatoes Funky rare and cool plants Seeds as far as the eyes can see They have a phenomenal selection of goods for your garden (decor, tools, trinkets...) as well as soil, soil amendments, and even compost tea by the gallon. The employees here are always helpful and polite. They all seem to have a great deal of knowledge and appear to enjoy what they are doing. That's saying a LOT about a business. I can't think of a better garden store in Portland. The primary reasons why are the selection of unique offerings, store layout, and staff knowledge. This isn't Home Depot so temper your expectations about price. You can actually find value if you look. Return policy was hassle-free. And their tool sharpening service is convenient. As a novice gardener, I came to Garden Fever with a lot of questions! I recently moved into my new home which came with a fresh shiny raised bed, and the sunny weather had been itching for me to plant my own garden! I knew roughly what I wanted to plant, but I didn't know what varieties to get, how far to space them out, what kind of fertilizer to use, etc. The staff was so helpful! I basically had a 1:1 personal session with one of their employees in the nursery who helped me pick out a bounty of vegetables to plant! In the end I walked out with a giant bag of fertilizer, kale, lettuce, strawberries, peppers, and tomatoes for less than $30! Very reasonable, especially for the amazing service!
