I typically love this restaurant as it's close to my work and we order from here quite often. Yesterday , 10/15/24 we ordered lunch and I saved mine for dinner. I was eating my bowl and had something cut the top of my mouth. Open further inspection I found whatever this is that sorta looks and feels like a finger nail of some sort ? I love roots :( I still think the salads are really good, but I'm just sad because the service has not been that great - I was eating my yam jam salad with mushrooms, when I felt something prick me - when I spat it out, it was a piece of wire! I reached out via Instagram to let them know, who referred me to their customer service email address. Getting a response from them has been super slow... I haven't heard from them after confirming my order and payment information... :( just be wary when you eat your salad! Not sure how a piece of sharp wire got in there. read more

Kids eat free! Every day! We've been enjoying this place. It's super fresh, super healthy, many of the options have kale bases, the chicken tastes good, and I love that beets are an option. Price points are high (like $13 for a bowl) but the portions are enough for two meals. The kids bowls are smaller, but free! My kids love the sweet potato and the chicken. El Jefe is really good--kind of like sweetgreen's Guacamole Greens but with chicken too. May weather is great too--it mixes kale and bulgur, beers, pickled red onions, sweet potato, and goat cheese. I'm not sure I've come to crave this place as often as Cava or chipotle, but it's certainly an interesting , healthy, and delicious option, and the fact that kids eat free sweetens the deal! read more

I've been meaning to be to write a review for this spot. Id happily make the 35 minute trip from my house to here for the food and service. My only little complaint is I wish they were closer! I have not been dissatisfied, not even once. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Everything is fresh and clean and they even have crayons and coloring pages for the little ones which is thoughtful for diners with children.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Today the young man that made my salad ran after me because he forgot to put the dressing I requested on the side in the bag. Roots was a staple for me when I was student at UVA. I've been missing it for many years since I graduated, so I was so excited to hear they opened up a location in Northern Virginia. It's just as good as I remember, and I got my go to of the Apollo. The portion sizes are very generous, the chicken is so delicious and juicy, and you really can't go wrong with any of the salads. The ambiance is lovely: there is plenty of seating, the lighting is beautiful and sunny, and the decor is very modern and aesthetic. 10/10 would recommend!! read more

I found Roots unexpectedly and was very surprised. Although not exclusively vegan, it is vegan friendly. I've had lots of tofu in my life, but their tofu is a kind the best, it's firm and flavorful throughout. You can custom create your dishes so it's hard to go wrong. read more

Everything has been great, including friendly staff, fresh veggies, and clean interior, but the quality of grilled chicken sadly has not been good. It is so dry and sometimes hard to chew :( Have been a monthly (sometimes biweekly) frequent since the opening, getting my El Jefe, which has long been my favorite since I was in Charlottesville. I have never found grilled chicken at Charlottesville Roots so dry and hard, but unfortunately at Fairfax Roots, dry chicken seems to be the norm. I have even tried ordering El Jefe different times of the day to see if I have been ordering at the wrong times. But nope, when I ordered El Jefe as soon as the restaurant opened today, the grilled chicken was very dry and hard that I even wondered if it were from the night before :( Wish something can be done about the grilled chicken (and also the grilled tofu, which I also found to be so dry a few times I tried the Southern). Hopefully next time I visit (which I have been hoping and why I am still going in every month), the chicken will be as good as the one in Charlottesville Roots! read more

So glad to see Roots up in NOVA!! I went to UVA and definitely miss eating Roots in Charlottesville. It is healthy and VERY filling! I can usually make my bowl 2 meals worth. My go-to is El Jefe and customizing it a bit to my liking. I like that they have an app now and rewards! I'm addicted! The pesto Cesar is amazing! I crave it almost everyday. I add siracha and have it without the Parmesan cheese and no chicken. The staff is always friendly, the place is clean. Only con is that the parking is very limited and you have to park in the garage which is a couple of minutes walk. The app also never works for me for some reason. This place is like a mixture of cava & sweetgreen. The greatest thing about this place (well for me) is that kids get a free bowl! Ordered the balboa & El jefe. Definitely preferred the balboa. There was a nice kick from the hot sauce balanced nicely with sweetness from the sweet potato. Pickled onions added a nice tartness. Bowls are certainly made with fresh ingredients. They loaded our bowls up with chicken which is a huge plus. I wish they'd chop the chicken into smaller pieces cause they're a bit too big & end up being dry. Also wish there was more protein variety. Overall, pretty solid. The free bowl for my little ones will keep me coming back! read more

Recently tried Roots and I was not impressed. Maybe Roots was busy(on a Friday night) and got my order incorrectly or their people don't care when making an order. I ordered 2 bowls to pickup of El Jefe and specially selected to remove the pita chips since my wife has Celiac. They didn't follow instructions and overstuffed the bowl with pita chips, on top of that they missed some toppings and the dash of chipotle sauce and lime! I have loved roots since living in Charlottesville and was so excited for a location finally opening in the northern VA area. My go to bowl is the mayweather. The first time I visited this location, I got the mayweather and made a simple substitution. Instead I got a completely wrong bowl that included corn, the wrong cheese, and the wrong dressing. My husband got the same bowl and our bowls tasted completely different. The second time I visited this location, I got the mayweather again with the same simple substitution. Again, there was no cheese added when the bowl comes with goat cheese. Also my bowl was doused with dressing and was soggy by the time I got home to eat it. Both times the kale was soggier than I previously remember when going to other roots locations. I understand this is a new location but the staff should know how to make the bowls on the menu. read more

Delicious and large portioned salad. My go to is the YamYam with no protein and it feels healthy plus it's very filling, I usually have leftovers. I love the concept and there is a wide variety in the menu. However, I will take 2 star off because the service at this particular location is CHAOTIC. It's very loud with metal bowls and tongs clanking abs falling all over the place, you have to scream multiple times so they hear your order and I always feel in a rush when I'm there, even when there's no other customers. Last time I was there on a Sunday morning there was no other customer but they had about 8 people in the counter all preparing Online orders and they were all over the place. I ordered my usual YamYam and before leaving I noticed they didn't add any of the Roots rice, which is a main ingredient. I went back to request it and had 3 people at the same time "trying to help" and get my bowl back to remake. One guy said "you know the menu, you should work here".... I'm happy I caught the error and still enjoyed my salad but it was kinda stressful when it should not have been. Other times that I've ordered the meal to pick up, I've noticed the salad I ordered has extra ingredients I didn't ask for or are part of that salad. Kinda funny since the menu is written in that big board. The assembly line concept needs better supervision and workers, although friendly, need to just calm down and not rush orders. read more

My order is consistently incorrect when ordered for delivery. For example, I order two Jefes for me and my wife without black beans but instead receive what seems like extra. Both Jefes then come without rice when only one was ordered as a salad. Both are missing broccoli when it's been charged extra. Also, I'll have ordered and paid for extra dressing or Green tea and it is always missing from the order. I've contacted customer support multiple times but have yet to receive any response. I'd only order in-person here because there is bound to be an issue that you'll need to bring up to the front. read more
