The other broken tooth was inspected by Opps and he laid out a very CLEAR "treatment plan"which included a referral to an endontist to get a root canal, then I was to follow back up with Dr. Opps to get a crown put on the tooth. I secured a appt with endontist and when I went to the endontist appt the endontist said: "we can do a root canal, but you honestly only have about a 50/50 shot of saving this tooth with a crown! I was in shock! WHAT!?? So, in my initial appt after evaluating my tooth and creating a "treatment plan" Dr Opps NEVER mentioned that there would be a potential problem getting a crown! Keep in mind dentists are trained and ABLE to perform ROOT CANALS themselves and a qualified proficient dentist should be able to tell whether you're a candidate for a crown or not and certainly a better outcome prediction of a 50/50 chance!!!! The endontist office took a special type of xray upon my arrival (that my insurance did not cover) and that coupled with the fact that I walked in the door on referral from Dr Opps. COST ME OVER $600 from my dental insurance MAXIMUM for the year that I could have used on ACTUAL SERVICES THAT I COULD HAVE GOTTEN COMPLETED, as I do have some tiny cavities and I'm in need of a deep cleaning as well!!! I left the endontist's office in shock and disma!!! Why go through a root canal for a 50/50 chance of saving my tooth with a crown!??? I opted to NOT get a root canal and have the tooth in question extracted because 50/50 chance of saving it was not worth going through a ROOT CANAL only to possibly be told sorry a crown won't work!!! I was heavily disappointed and absolutely felt taken advantage of as again this man's "care plan" WASTED WELL OVER $600 of my insurance benefit for ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!! I went back to Dr Opps at Smiles the next day to speak to someone in the business office because I could not believe the amount of money this man's blatant IGNORANCE, INCOMPETENCE, and/or GREED cost me! Meghan the office manager at Smiles of LWR took me to an empty office and we spoke behind a closed door, and I explained my dissatisfaction of what had taken place and the fact that I wanted those BOGUS CHARGES at least credited back to me since he led me on a wild goose chase! This man basically told me "there's ALWAYS a chance a procedure may not work out." I explained that I feel that a 50/50 chance was a pretty steep chance to take not only FINANCIALLY but submitting myself to a root canal that very well would not result in a crown after all!!! I came in for a routine checkup, cleaning, and possibly some minor work. After X-rays and the exam, the hygienist suddenly claimed I needed a deep cleaning costing hundreds of dollars. That made no sense, I've never had gum issues and had a normal cleaning at another office just six months ago. I declined and asked for a standard cleaning covered by my insurance. I was then told flat out that they would NOT clean my teeth unless I agreed to the expensive deep cleaning. That's not just questionable, that's unacceptable. Refusing basic care unless a patient agrees to a costly procedure raises serious concerns about their practices and priorities. Patients should be able to trust that recommendations are based on actual need, not upselling. This experience destroyed that trust. I would strongly advise others to avoid this place.

During the procedure, the dentist actually broke a tool inside one of my canals. He then told me they would need to reschedule me with a different provider, quickly put a temporary filling in, and sent me out the door while I was still numb. There was no real explanation or reassurance about what happens next. To make things worse, the assistant, Ryan, seemed very unsteady and had trouble communicating. At one point, he even dropped a dental tool during the procedure, which made the whole situation feel even more uncomfortable and unprofessional. They didn't charge me for the visit, which honestly felt like an acknowledgment that things didn't go as they should have. Now I'm left with a shaved down tooth and a poorly done temporary filling, and I have to go elsewhere to fix it. At a previous appointment, the dentist mentioned he usually refers these cases to a specialist, but said he could handle it himself. That clearly didn't turn out well. On top of everything, the office itself felt dirty and disorganized. Overall, this was a very stressful and disappointing experience, and I would not feel comfortable returning.

I let Dr Scala's assistant know that my concerns were the health of my mouth and cost. The assistant spent a half hour entering information in the computer then left the room. I waited in the room for 50 minutes before taking my records and leaving. This was the most unprofessional experience I have had to date. I have no idea what happened (no one came back) but I would not recommend going to see this dentist especially if you have specific dental challenges. I would give -1 to this provider and her staff.
