Rose's steps out on a limb and takes risks, and I'll choose that over boring and reliable any day. They use very strong flavors and it's inevitable that they will either clash or overwhelm for some people. But this is my style of food to the note. I've had their smashed tofu salad twice now (once with long beans and once with acorn squash) and can confidently say that you WILL have your breath taken away by a surprise hidden red chili pepper, even if the rest of the dish doesn't seem like it's about to be spicy. The flavor profile is essentially tofu larb with maybe a little less toasted rice powder. I've had their belt noodles (called biang biang elsewhere) both with slow-cooked beef and with winter veggies. Both are great, but I prefer the cuminy spice of the beef dish to the sweet sesame of the vegetables. I especially love it when salads are impressive, because 95% of the time they're just a way to have healthy interludes between courses, and Rose's daikon/persimmon/radicchio with sesame dressing and little specks of ham was maybe the best salad I've had in recent memory. I will definitely be re-creating this one at home. Their Sichuan sausage dish has big unapologetic chunks of fat and comes swimming in cucumber-scented hot oil. The kimchi pork dumplings don't taste like anything you'd find in the freezer section of an Asian grocery store, which is usually what happens in restaurants and why I don't tend to order them. They have a strong umami flavor and the sesame dipping sauce is fermented and complex. Skip the pork bun - everything else on the menu is better than this extra-bready, skimpy-fillinged nothing appetizer. And I know I'm going to be the minority on this, but I think Rose's has FAR better meals than baked goods, so maybe that's why the pork bun falls flat for me. Yes, the array is dizzying, and it all sounds great, but I haven't been impressed with even the most impressive sounding desserts, like passionfruit mochi bread pudding or pistachio meyer lemon curd muffins. Damn, I really wanted to like this place. Came here with a friend for dinner and ordered the steamed buns, spicy dry pot, soy tonkotsu ramen, and chrysanthemum tea. 1. Steamed buns - flavor was good but to pay $4 for a bun with barely any filling? I'll pass and stick to the pork buns you can get at an authentic Asian bakery. 2. Spicy dry pot - overheard the server telling the table next to us that spicy dry pot was "just like Korean hot pot." (And for those of you wondering, yes he was) I just want to clarify that spicy dry pot is from China and has very specific characteristics that are VASTLY different from Korean hot pot. ^Honestly speaking the flavor wasn't bad but the amount of spices and seasoning you had was WAYYYY too much for the amount of vegetables in the dish. Half way into the bowl it was like digging into the sand to find shells. If anyone from Roses is reading this - cut the vegetables slightly smaller, use a more proportionate amount of spices/seasoning and serve in a wider dish (similar to the shape of a wok) - which is the way dry pot is supposed to be served. 3. Soy Tonkotsu Ramen - noodles were good, pork collar was really good too but the broth was like a bowl of melted fat. You can get a really nice thick and rich soup but this was not the way to do it. I had mine spicy & after tasting the broth I couldn't taste the spice - just a ton of fat. I'm currently sitting on the toilet with my stomach feeling queasy af. (Mind you I only ate the noodles) 4. Chrysanthemum tea - if you order tea you will receive a cup that holds the same amount of liquid as 2 shot glasses do. To add insult to injury they give you a tea pot, but after filling your cup there will be maybe another half cup left in the pot. They didn't refill it either. Maybe I ordered the wrong things because it seems like the belt noodles are really popular, but I don't see myself coming back to eat. Really wanted to like this place, but after visiting a few times, I've found that the execution of Rose's dishes just isn't there. An important principle of Asian cooking is balance and the flavors in the braised beef belt noodles (cumin, soy sauce, cilantro, etc.) are just completely out of balance. Super salty and heavy on the spices. Even versions that I've had in China weren't this heavy and salty. The noodles themselves were also slightly too thick and doughy. Simply putting Asian ingredients in a dish does not make it Asian, there also needs to be finesse and an understanding of how the ingredients taste together. As other reviewers have mentioned, the belt noodles would be improved if you either reduced the amount of sauce by half or increased the amount of noodles. I appreciate the effort that Rose's has put into offering a nice variety of dishes and I might come here in the future if friends wanted to. But the service....leaves much (much, much, much) to be desired. I would be the first to recognize the immense challenges faced by restaurants during Covid. But even pre-pandemic, the service was far from memorable (e.g., ordering coffee at the start of service only to have it delivered after the meals have arrived). And while practically every other restaurant in Durham has developed an admirable take out program, Rose's carry out is shambolic in comparison. You can "schedule" a pick-up time when placing an online order (in theory), but my take out order has NEVER, repeat NEVER--and we order Rose's carry out almost weekly--been ready on time. Just now, I had a scheduled pick up time of 6:15pm, and I walked out of the restaurant with my food at 6:50pm. I'm a huge fan of the restaurant, I really am. But the dismal service combined with the less-than-affordable prices (i.e., $15+ for a good but modestly sized entree) makes me worry that patrons like myself will simply look to Durham's many other great restaurants when trying to find a good--but reliably timed--meal. read more

This place probably serves the best flavor combination of ice cream sandwiches around the Triangle area. I love the textures of the cookies, their flavor as well as the ice cream. They neatly cut the ice cream sandwich into two or four pieces as per your request and that makes it easier to eat and share! My all time favorite flavor of ice cream sandwich has been their white miso ice cream with ginger-snap cookie. Since they have rotational flavors almost every month, I keep going back for more. I wish I would do 3 and 1/2 stars because 3 is just a little too low. I would say this place is definitely better for desserts than savory food. It is a pretty small place, so either be prepared to wait or take your food to go! That's not a problem at all though, just letting others know. They have a selection of sweet treats to pick from and it is hard to pick just one! We got a box full of them and enjoyed them all with my family. My favorite was this toffee cake like thing. Their savory food wasn't my favorite as I did not enjoy the flavor of the noodle dish I got and the katsu sandwich, while tasty had bad pieces of meat that I do not enjoy eating and had to pick at my food to remove it. The meat in the bun was okay, but honestly prefer others more. The sauce it came with just tasted and felt like dipping in flavorless oil. We arrived for a late lunch it is small place with a few high top tables and a small parking lot. We had our dog with us so we sat outside on the front unremarkable patio where there is no table service. You have to place your order inside and they bring it to you. By far, I would have preferred to sit inside. We ordered dumplings and a tomato salad to start and each had a vegetarian bowl with wide homemade noodles. We shared a gingerbread cheesecake and cream Brûlée macaron for dessert. Everything was good but next time I will skip the appetizers and just order a noodle bowl and dessert which were wonderful. Once seated, we all ordered the same thing (talk about diversity, right?) - the steamed bun appetizer and a bowl of ramen (there's only one kind). The steamed bun was perfect and had great flavor - definitely dip it in the hot chili oil, which takes it to the next level! However, this time we arrived to a nearly empty restaurant, had to wait around and ask whether we could seat ourselves. Then, when seated, got water, menu and nothing else for 10-15 mins. In that time everybody else but one person waiting for take out had left and the waitress was clearing tables right and left of us of a few water glasses. it looked like a calm phase to us but maybe she was really busy with something we weren't aware of. A quick "I'll be right with you" would have clarified that. It truly felt almost hostile the way people were not looking at us at all. I've been meaning to check this place out for awhile now and finally had the chance for lunch. It was pretty packed, and took about 15 mins for a table to open up for us. The waiters were friendly and the place was very well decorated and looked like a hole in the wall spot for good eats and dessert. The food came out within 20 mins, and the sandwich came in a bowl. The dish consisted of a buttery pita wrap, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, with a full bowls worth of ramen noodles, a few bites of pork shoulder, egg, mayo, and veggies. Each of these ingredients would have tasted very good on their own, but together it was very tough to eat, and basically tasted like a giant mushy sandwich with clashing flavors and too much of the mushy texture. The crisp of the bread on the outside added some decent texture, but was no match for the mushy of the egg, ramen noodles together. This was my first time ever trying a noodle sandwich and I can't say I'd ever try one again. For dessert I tried the Miso Ginger Ice Cream sandwich. It was delicious and had a good balance of texture and flavor. The ginger snaps were mostly crunchy but slightly soft, and tasted sweet. The interior is fairly stylish and simple, but the air circulation is medoicare at best, when they are frying something, you could definitely see how the air in the dinning area denses (open kitchen) My friend and I had two ramens to begin with both of them are spot on and is slightly better than other ramen resturants in town. The serving is a little small respectively and I had went for an additional wok salad. The salad was a little too oily so it threw me off somewhat. The service is respectable considering how busy the place is. Solid 3.5 stars until the next visit. I'm a dessert fanatic and will go out of my way to try out a dessert spot. The menu was online, but no pictures so it was hard to for me to know what it is. Couldn't find the drink menu online but when I did I think it was just bottle or can drinks. Later I spotted the drink menu on their table outside. I got the mochi cake - came in a bundt form a bit bigger than the mini bundtlette. I got a ginger one, sorry can't remember the exact ingredients. Texture was good, chewy -- got that mochi-mochi texture. Flavor was good, a hint of cinnamon sugar, the candied or jam fruit flavor at the bottom was slightly too sweet for me. I got the meyers lemon bar, I didn't like the lemon part too much because of the texture and flavor was a bit too sweet for me as well. Price: it is a bit pricey for the size of the lemon bar but im willing to pay for the cake. Service: they were attentive, took my order there, but they suggested to order online for pick-up. Rose's will probably be a pass for me in the future. I met a friend here for dinner. I had been wanting to try Rose's for a while but hadn't rushed in after hearing about some lackluster experiences from trusted foodie friends. We decided to give it a go one Friday night. We went early enough that there wasn't a problem getting a table, but seats certainly filled quickly. I will admit it's a tad off-putting to have a bunch of people stand fairly close and watch you eat as they wait for a table. I'm also pretty sure the couple sitting next to us did not enjoy listening to us catch up based on the judgmental glances (tables are close enough together you can absolutely hear conversations). The menu is constantly changing, and nothing I'd read about was on the menu that night. To be honest, there wasn't anything I wanted to order. Luckily our server was great with recommendations. We started with the pork bun. It was very tasty but too expensive ($4). I asked what our waiter would order, and he recommended the fish so that's what I tried. It was white grunt with peppers, squash, and rice. I enjoyed it. My friend had the ramen and wasn't a fan. For context, she loves ramen and eats it often. We shared an ice-cream sandwich. It was good but didn't seem at all special to me. Maybe we tried the wrong flavor. Our table also was cleared when we went up to peak at the pastry case, so it felt weird sitting back down. Overall, Rose's was fine. I think it's too expensive. I didn't love the environment. We used to come here when it was just a butcher shop and bakery, now we've been here twice as a restaurant. The latest was for Sunday breakfast, and we enjoyed the porridge and Hanoi-style pho. Service was good but not the fastest (it seemed like you should be able to get pho faster). We did not order any bakery items this time but have enjoyed sweet goodies in the past. The menu is not extensive, and there's not a ton of seating. Also, they promote up-front that they are Asian-inspired but not necessarily 100% authentic. The parking lot is very small. They also add a small charge to your bill to help them pay their employees living wages. I support that but can see where some customers might question that. read more
