The fried chicken was good and very crispy though the pickled radishes tasted a bit raw and not very pickled. The portion of ttekboki was a great value for the price but the addition of big pieces of cabbage and bean sprouts was a little different from what I've experienced. Cozy Korean fried chicken spot on 9th St. I've been here a couple of times now & their food is consistently good. This time, we got the Creamy Onion half chicken with a side of pickled radish. The portion size was perfect for 2 people. The chicken is crispy & juicy, with the onion providing a refreshing contrast. I did think the sauce was a bit too sweet, but it wasn't egregiously so. I thought that the seafood pancake could be easily replicated at home with some Korean pancake mix. However, the chicken was special and crunchy! The supreme was a little bit too sweet for my taste, but since we had leftovers, I changed my mind. The day old chicken wings were perfectly crispy and not too sweet. First, this would be a five star review if the fried chicken was the only thing on the menu. Crisp, perfectly cooked, with excellent sauces, just delicious. I realize this is primarily a Korean fried chicken restaurant, they should stick to that. The ramen is as bad as the chicken is good. No flavor, soggy, dry pork, limp greens, truly uninspired and not worth the lackluster effort. It's a small place, better for take out. Service was attentive. When I tell you this food is really worth it. I was skeptical at first about it honestly I never tried Korean Fried Chicken before. The service was good and the restaurant was really clean. Came here after a hike and the garlic chicken hit the spot!! Tastes like they use real honey for their honey garlic sauce, and the sauce covers the wings really well. Fantastic KFC! Little shop can be really crowded and loud on a weekend night. We ordered at the counter and waited for a pretty long time. The staff were friendly and helpful. Parking can be hard and they don't have water (can only order water bottle), so I will do take out next time! This was our first visit to a Chicken Bee in Durham. I'll preface this with the fact that we were the first and only customers at 11 AM. My wife is Korean so I've been eating Korean food for many years. I decided on my favorite Korean dish, Bulgogi. My wife ordered Bibimbap. When our food arrived I noticed the ginormous amount of onion on the plate. Half of the meal was onion. The bulgogi itself tasted good and was hot. I just never had so much onion on a bulgogi plate...ever. I removed most of the excess onion and left an appropriate amount in the bulgogi. We both love bibimbap and have eaten it for many years. The chicken bee version uses uncooked bean sprouts. We've never had bibimbap with raw bean sprouts. The waitress told us that it is the way Koreans eat bibimbap. Funny...she is Chinese and my wife is Korean. She told us the cook is Mexican. So my wife took most of her food and a boatload of onion home so she could "fix the food". We live 2 hours away from Durham so we'll probably not try that again. Plenty of other Korean restaurants in the area. Again, the food tasted good and the service was good. Also, it's cold and rainy today so that was also a factor in deciding tonight's dinner. Chicken Bee is my favorite KFC restaurant in Durham! I will say that the chicken isn't as crispy as BonChon's but they are more generous with the sauce. I always order soy garlic wings and sometimes will get the half order of the hot and spicy chicken. I decided to just order both today since I don't have it that often! Leftovers are also a plus for me since I've been too lazy to cook lately. I like to throw them in the toaster oven or air fryer to reheat. The sauces have great flavor and the chicken is juicy and not dry. I also appreciate that the wings are on the bigger side. The hot and spicy is a pretty good spice level for me; it's got good heat and is tolerable. I always get pickled radish as my side. I ordered on doordash for 2 reasons: I didn't feel like driving in the rain and I know parking is very limited there. I do wish they had a better way of packaging the food so it's not as exposed and could be easily tampered with. In many ways, it was like BonChon...just as good at least, though maybe slightly less polished? I learned that this is a local one-off, and not a chain like BonChon. BTW, there was only one friendly cashier-waitress working the restaurant, and she did fine on her own (given that there was only 2 occupied tables during the time I was there). "Chicken wings & Korean dishes on Durham's Ninth Street" Was interested to try this place tonight-- ordered takeout online using clover.com on a Saturday evening. The website said it'd take 35 minutes and we arrived right on time. Was lucky to grab a parking spot right in front of the restaurant-- it was nice seeing they had a few outdoor tables as well as several inside. I ordered the bibimbap with spicy chicken, yumyum sauce, and teriyaki sauce. My family members both ordered the small boneless wings with rice (though one also bought pickled radish for extra). The food came out very quickly after I got there, but the staff were overstretched dealing with phone orders, Uber Eats delivery drivers, and the dine-in customers, so it took another 7-8 minutes for them to put the 3 boxes sitting on the counter into a bag and hand it to me. Fair enough-- I know things are tough when a place is hopping. Positives: + The honey garlic batter on the wings was REALLY good. The batter was thick, but not too thick. Some other reviewers commented that the chicken was unusually greasy-- they must not be from the south, since this was way less greasy than Bojangles and other fast food fried chicken around here. + The quantity on the wings was good. Even though one of us got the 6-count boneless wings, there were at least 8 large ones in there. Makes for a better value than one might assume from the $10 price. + The bibimbap was VERY good. I really liked the flavor combinations (and sauces), and I didn't feel they short-changed me on any aspect of it. + Portion size of the bibimbap was just-right for me. On another one of our visits to Chicken Bee, we tried their tteokbokki, soy garlic fried chicken, and naked wings with thai chili sauce. For the price, the tteokbokki was pretty sauce-heavy with relatively few rice cakes. We preferred the soy garlic chicken over the thai chili chicken, as we liked the crunch and flavor of the fried chicken better. For dessert, we ordered the strawberry bingsoo and red bean bingsoo. Both were great -- they were just the right level of sweetness and had a good amount of toppings. I wish they had spicier sauces. It did however me of the ones I used to have in Korea. So happy to have them right here in Durham. Popped into Chicken Bee during their soft opening week and yes, they are working on their service and operations. But they are serving up some great eats! Ordered up some soy-garlic wings and some mandu and knew it would take some time. Popped out and grabbed a beer (they do have an ABC license now and are working on it) and came back, perfect timing! Had a plate of crispy mandu dumpling that were dipped in soy-garlic sauce. And my 10 piece wings were great! The soy-garlic marinade is a bit lighter but they do NOT batter their chicken. The skin comes off a bit for some crispiness and the chicken was perfectly fried. Chicken Bee is definitely a bit different from what I've tried elsewhere. It's also served with two sides (rice, daikon, cole slaw, etc) The family running Chicken Bee is working hard and super nice so please bear with them. My husband and I came for dinner on night 2 of their soft opening, when they were serving a limited menu. I won't comment on their service, except to note that it was friendly and earnest as they work on getting their bearings. We got a half and half order of their Korean twice-fried chicken wings. Their wings were unlike what I've had elsewhere in Durham (M Kokko, Heavenly Buffaloes) - there's no noticeable breading. Instead, something about the cooking technique makes the skin puff up away from the meat, creating a crispy crunchy chicken skin crackling around the moist and tender meat. Both wing flavors were stickily sweet and savory. The spicy garlic packed a slow burn. I didn't find it too spicy at first bite but then found myself needing extra napkins as I was finishing up my first wing - by wing two, I was sweating a tad, and my nose was starting to run! I was thankful for the cooling bites of pickled radish side dish, even though neither that nor rice could completely stop my lips from tingling and burning. If you like spiciness, definitely get the spicy garlic. If you fear spice, the soy garlic ones are also delicious. We also tried the fried zucchini sticks (fully encased in batter, so on the heavy side) and bulgogi bibimbap. Both were tasty enough but not standout. The wings were the real star, and they're what will bring us back again. The only downside is that the wings are fried to order, and the (regular, not just soft open) menu notes that they'll take 35 minutes. Maybe once they get going and everyone realizes how great the wings are, they'll be able to have them a bit more ready made?
