The Albert G. Horton Memorial Cemetery is a State Veterans Cemetery on Milners Road in a rural area…read moreof Suffolk. Its 2004 opening provided a military cemetery for the huge military community that chose to retire in Coastal Virginia. The cemetery is one of a number of regional cemeteries run by the Virginia Department of Veterans Services, Eligible Veterans receive one free burial site & USDVA provided outer burial receptions/crypts & headstones. Should a veterans's wife predecease him, the headstone is inscribed with her information facing forward. When the veteran dies his information is inserted on the opposite side and the headstone rotated so his information faces the front, My Uncle had originally planned to be buried at Arlington. After his wife died, the funeral director mentioned Albert Horton. When we left my Uncle asked what I thought. We both had individually felt that it would be a place where we could more easily visit her. We toured the next day. Even the drive down Milners Road is picturesque. The cemetery itself was clean, new and beautifully laid out. The staff was friendly. The decision was made. At that time word of the beautiful Veterans Cemetery had not yet widely spread. She received a convenient plot near the drive through and near a bench. There appeared to be space for burials for many years. That hasn't been the case. The Cemetery filled over the years and has been expanded. When my Uncle died I had my first experience with the Pavilion, which is used to provide a military graveyard service with Honor Guard. It was a moving experience for the man I considered my second father. The Honor Guard was a special final recognition for the retired Naval Commander, buried in his uniform, who had served in WWII, Korean & Vietnam. Albert Horton Veterans Cemetery continues to serve as a valued source for a final resting place for those who have served our country. Wreaths across America places gorgeous holiday wreaths on each grave. The Horton Wreath Society places wreaths on military holidays. Contributions can be made and are encouraged. Whether the burial be a traditional plot with stone, a columbarium or in ground urn, there is no cost for those Veterans who qualify. Thank you to the Virginia Department of Veterans Services. This time I was approached as I entered the cemetary by an employee that wanted me to fill out a raffle ticket! On my exit I was approached by more employees trying to do the same. What a deplorable, greedy, and tasteless way to do business. It is shameful, disgraceful and disrespectful to prey upon people who are only there to visit and mourn the loss of their loved ones.

I simply was there for the burials. The cemetery looked very well kept. The staff on the grounds were friendly. I watched them put my granny in the ground when they thought all of my family had left. I've never stayed at a cemetery long enough to witness that. They seemed to take great care in burying her. I don't know know about their pricing or sales practices. Looking at the other reviews, I'm a bit concerned there. If I ever needed their services in the future for a family member, I may consider them.

From our phone calls prior to the transition, to the first meeting to discuss the transfer of services from one local company to Beach Funeral Services, we were given the utmost respect and patient consideration for our desire to place our mother in the hands of a caring and thoughtful funeral agency. We arrived at Beach Services with a paid plan from Rosewood Kellam (UGH) and although Beach Services did not offer all of the options that were pre-paid thru the larger corporate funeral group, , Beach Funeral Services and staff matched as many of the options as they feasibly could and surpassed the corporate group in SOOOOO many ways without adding all of the line item cost that can occur with funeral arrangements. Our Mother was treated and handled like she was Queen Elizabeth and looked heavenly. Everything was royally honored. Service impeccable. Inside the funeral Chapel the seating was comfortable, high tech capabilities for the ceremony and a good sound system. It's an inground cementry where the "headstones" are laying face up.You can lay flowers, flags or other memorabilia you like for yourloved ones, too. The pic I took does not do justice to the condition of the grounds because it is up closer to the road but most of it is much worse, and the further back you go, the worse it gets. It is on the north side of the dead end section of Laskin Road as that street approaches Great Neck Road from the east. The tree filled cemetery is a serene final resting place. The only interruption is the sound of low flying fighter jets landing at Oceana Master Jet Base. But somehow that feels fitting, especially when laying to rest a long time resident of our city. Look here for history also. Many burials & tombstones from centuries ago have been moved to this cemetery as development encroachment disturbed what was meant to be their final resting place. One's heart may be sad as a dear family friend is laid to rest. But leaving them in such a peaceful place is a comfort.
