This was an extremely disturbing and unacceptable experience that resulted in serious harm to my dog. I initially called this office because my dog needed an abdominal ultrasound. The office staff specifically told me that Dr. Marder could perform it and scheduled me for an appointment later that same day. When I arrived, Dr. Marder informed me that he could not perform an abdominal ultrasound and only knew how to do bladder ultrasounds, which was never disclosed beforehand or I would have gone somewhere else. Despite this, he proceeded with a bladder ultrasound and told me there were no bladder stones. He then recommended an X-ray and stated there was no evidence of stones on that imaging either. Shortly afterward, Dr. Marder returned and said that an AI program had interpreted the X-ray as showing stones and insisted that my dog needed surgery immediately. Based on this recommendation, my dog was scheduled for surgery the next day. During surgery, no stones were found. I was later informed that Dr. Marder had repeatedly attempted to place a urinary catheter, resulting in significant bleeding. Bleeding that never stopped after whatever trauma he caused to the urethra. When I arrived to pick up my dog, he had a large abdominal incision and a catheter actively draining blood. His condition was clearly worse than when I had brought him in. When I saw the critical condition my dog was in, I immediately took my dog to a New York City animal hospital, where he was admitted to the ICU for emergency care. This entire situation was the result of poor communication, lack of appropriate diagnostic capability, and a deeply concerning surgical decision that should never have been made. I would strongly caution any pet owner to seek any care at this practice. read more

Our beautiful unconditionally loved cat is gone .Always get a SECOND OPINION and DON'T WASTE ANY TIME. We didn't . We let him down He trusted us and we failed . Poor Kitty is gone forever . If a pet is diagnosed with a serious medical condition please see a specialist/and or hospital with extensive testing capability. Brought my cat in on a Thursday and told he would not live past the weekend - in a joking fashion in the waiting room among other clients and staff. So unprofessional . I had lost all hope thinking every day would be his last. He did last weeks beyond that and I had so much more precious time to get a second opinion. A certain test was done by this vet on my cat (a senior cat) and made the condition worse and could have ruptured the mass causing even further complications. The Vet also dug his hands into my cats abdomen when another test (from a prior vet) already revealed the size of the abdominal growth - why would you do that? After doing research - this test had so many negative ramifications and not conclusive - My cat cried all that night when I got him home. If this can help any other cat owner - please see a specialist or get them to a full service hospital care with advanced testing facilities to get more conclusive results. And more caring compassionate care - when who knows this condition could have been cured had the correct testing been done and most likely caused by some other issue. A prior vet Bond Vet had recommended procedures of which none had been performed. And all the while this vet was complaining about the prior vet I had brought my cat to - stating they did not do a thorough exam. Dr. May said it was an incurable pain free disease , but our poor 14 year old Kitty suffered tremendously in his final weeks . PLEASE GET A SECOND OPINION. SEE A CAT SPECIALIST. I was given so little time - lost hope - and failed to see the big picture until it was too late. Our cat suffered so much . Dr. May puts you in a panic - stating my cat is so sick and only has a few days to live - then says to start chemo right away for a 14 year old cat that would only extend his life a few months. Dr. May was upset when I did not call him back right away the following Monday - we were absolutely devastated when he said our cat only had a few days. Dr. May is not an oncologist - why would you possibly be so arrogant with so little testing done (still dont even know what he had-have no faith in the diagnosis) - and cause so much pain and suffering for these little defenseless animals that have no voice and for the human parents that trusted you. Why do this? You have to know when you are causing more harm than good, have no judgement and are guided by selfish arrogance and greed. read more

I traveled 45 minutes from Suffolk County to bring my dog to see Dr. May whom I had great respect for and trusted his judgment, but a while ago my dog's care was turned over to Dr. Marder. Every time I brought my dog in he was taken into the back room by a vet tech and x-rayed. Eventually Dr. Marder would come out and address my concerns in the lobby! I cannot remember the last time Dr Marder took my dog into an exam room and checked his heart, teeth, temperature, lungs and actually had a conversation with me regarding my dog's issues. Always a lobby visit!! And always x-rays!!! My last visit with Dr. Marder was completely unacceptable. I had to bring my dog back a second time because the first time he did not notice that my dog's anal glands were full. That seems to me like veterinary 101. The total for those two visits was $700. Dr Marder refunded $200 that he charged me for the second visit because he realized his misdiagnosis. I ended up taking my dog to the emergency hospital because he pooped blood. Total cost for what should have a simple anal gland expression was $1040. I have now found a new vet who shows care and compassion, and actually speaks to me instead of grunting and shrugging his shoulders when I ask questions. Yes he actually shrugged his shoulders!! I forgot another incident with Brian Marder. Our Cat Tony became ill and we rushed him over to Greenvale. This was years ago. He was admitted and the following morning my cell phone rang and this is what I heard when I said hello: "burt your cat is dead" That's it. Now you may be wondering how is that possible that a Board Certified Veterinarian would make a call like that and say that in that way. This review is way late but after putting an animal down it takes awhile to want to put up a review. This is going to be a long review, so grab a drink. It's like writing therapy. We came to Dr. May as a second opinion (by referral of a friend) when my 4 year old Cane Corso, Cicero presented with a lump on what would equate to his wrist. Cicero was a big sissy of a dog but Dr May and the techs were very patient in examining him and making him comfortable. Unfortunately, Dr. May due to his experience, was able to confirm our initial suspicions quickly- osteosarcoma. I admired Dr. May for telling me that since Cic`s lungs were clear, he essentially would not perform the amputation without chemotherapy afterward because to do so would be futile, as osteosarc kills quickly without treatment. He explained everything compassionately but in a straight forward manner. We agreed to proceed. Dr. May performed the amputation himself. The only gripe I have is that a drain wasn't put in. Cicero blew up like a balloon and got so uncomfortable he wouldn't walk; we had to come back later and Dr. Marder put in a drain while Cic was awake. Bummer for puppy. Otherwise, fantastic job and Cic healed wonderfully. Then it was time for chemo. The vet techs who sat with and comforted Cic were just angels. It was nice to see him get excited to see people other than us for a change. The only complaint here would be that they'd often keep him in a cage for a long time, then draw his blood only to determine that they couldn't do the chemo that day because his numbers were low. Then one day I dropped him off first thing in the morning because I was planning on starting a drive to SC after I got off work at one, only to find that they weren't even starting his chemo until then, after keeping him caged all day. So, sometimes it was a bit disorganized and they weren't the best at keeping me in the loop. That said, they treated Cicero very very well and that's all I cared about. Finally, less than a year after this journey started, hip dysplasia set in, which is extra tough on a tripawd and it was time to say good bye. read more

Just got a puppy and as dog owners know the beginning can be a little expensive. Dr. May my doctor has done his best to save me money when it was possible. She had fleas when I got her and he didn't charge me for the bath on our first visit. She experienced bleeding in her stool and I called them and they said don't bring her in we don't want to have to have you pay. Come in and just pick up this $5 medicine if that doesn't work then come back with her. A day before I had a vaccine appointment she got sick and was vomiting. I took her in for treatment and Dr. May Wouldn't charge me for the exam the next day just the money for the shots. The dr and staff have done nothing but take of both my puppy and me. This place is highway robbery. There is no way they care about your pets. Continually treating an elderly diabetic cat that was not getting better. Only offering more ideas of treatment while watching the cat deteriorate instead of saying the humane thing would be to let him go. Each visit $400-$1000 and no change in the cat's health. I called in as an emergency after watching him seize right in front of me and was told to wait an hour and a half when the office officially opened! I ended up going to a local vet who's never seen my boy and got more compassionate care in 10 minutes than I did in 10 years with Roslyn Greenvale. They are in the right location for people who have money and waste it to line the pockets of these "doctors" who are sworn to do no harm. My dog passed away about a week ago and it has been a very rough experience, as I'm sure many have been through. Roslyn Greenvale Veterinary Group has been the place we have gone to for many years for our girl. After 16 years of life, it was time to put her down. Upon arriving at the vet, the nurses were kind and supportive during this terrible time. However, that was the only good experience we had that day. We waited in the room for Dr. Brian Marder for a couple of moments, until he arrives. The first thing he says is, "wow this is a lot of people." Is that really how you greet people when they're about to put their beloved dog down, let alone any of your clients? Mind you, we were four people. Lola was so loved and if it were possible, there would be way more than just four people in the room. She was not just a pet but a part of the family, so yes we were going to be there for her. Not once did he say sorry for our loss or for the rough time we were going through. This was simply just a job for him. When he put the anesthesia, Lola started crying and yelping. Instead of trying to calm her down, he says, "I swear it doesn't hurt," and laughs. How terrible are you??? He then steps out to wait for the drug to work. When he comes back he tells us to put her back on the table and so we do. I proceed to ask Dr. Brian Marder if this part will hurt her and he goes, "No I don't think it'll hurt." Excuse me? You don't THINK it'll hurt? That's your professional medical opinion? I'm paying you thousandths of dollars to tell me you don't THINK it'll hurt? That's outrageous. When he finally puts the drug in to put her to sleep, we are all sobbing and upset and then I ask how long it'll take and he goes, "oh it's done... Yeah, it's quick." Not once did he explain the process to us and how it would work. Once it's over he walks out and that's it. I've never met someone so heartless and self-absorbed in my life. This moment should have been so peaceful and loving and he completely ruined it by being such an a**. I'm writing this because no one should ever have to go through what we went through with him. We as clients, along with our precious pets do not deserve that. And this isn't the first time he has been awful to us. Whenever we would take Lola to him he would always behave in such an arrogant way, never listening to our inquisitions. He might've just been doing his job but part of being any kind of doctor is having good etiquette, which is something he extremely lacks. To make matters worse, we called a week later about Lola's ashes to see when they would be ready, and when they answer the phone, we find out that they already had them. Their excuse was that they were dropped off late the day before. If this was the case, why weren't we called first thing the next day? When we called, it was already 1 pm. We paid for the services in advance, and when it comes to a loved one, we would've loved to have been informed of when it was ready to be picked up. Who knows how long it would've been if we never decided to call that day? All in all, in a really difficult moment for my family and I, Dr. Brian Marder should not have been making the situation worse. "Bird doc", I'm talking to you now, maybe it's best to stick to birds because when it comes to dogs and people, you have no idea what you're doing and have no compassion for your clients. read more

Nancy did an amazing job with our Goldendoodle Bailey today. He was way past his due date for a haircut and unfortunately had developed a ton of knots in his coat. Nancy was so caring, very gentle and spent almost 4 hours with him! Nancy tried to only shave the areas that were most problematic very short, and she worked hard to shape his other areas so it would not look so bad. The alternative would have been just to give him just a quick buzz cut, but she did not do that. She even gave him a treat and let him take a break during the grooming process. RGVG Was very thorough during the visit as well, making sure Bailey was up-to-date on all of his tests and vaccinations. They will steal your money and your pet will still be sick, plain and simple. I've had a Yelp account for 7 years and this is my first review because no one has angered me so much with their atrocious business practices that I could even be bothered. This is the one that did it. I bring my cat in and without seeing her (because she didn't want to come out her carrier) they determined she needed a 400 dollar procedure based on my description alone (like I'm a vet). It was expensive but I agreed. They make you sign a form that states if you would like them to perform any tests or procedures they deem necessary or if you'd like them to call you first before tacking on charges. I said to absolutely call me first. They call me later on that night saying it wasn't the original problem, all she needed was an antibiotic shot and it would be an extra 200 dollars. This was after the fact. So basically, without running it by me, they want me pay for the original procedure they didn't need to do AS WELL as an extra 200 dollars? $600 for an antibiotic shot that I didn't even agree to? I've been calling them for a month and they won't return my calls, they just keep sending me bills for the difference I refuse to pay for. I speak to the front desk person who says she'll talk with the doctor and then I never hear from them. They increased my bill despite the fact THEY TOLD ME they'd run any extras by me first and they haven't even given me the results of all these super important tests they needed to run. 600 dollars later and she's still sick and I'll be damned if I bring her back there. No stars, just terrible and traumatized by this place. Had my dog neutered there by my vet who uses their OR facilities. Place has a front and back entrance, the front entrance backs right onto Northern Blvd. I specifically ask to bring my dog to back entrance has he gets very upset and can back right out of his harness, I received an adamant "no", no reason given. I bring my dog to front entrance and tell Dr May when he comes out he has to make sure dog doesn't slip out of harness. PS on the way in, he gets scared and pulls right out of harness and after chasing him in the driveway in a panic, he runs right onto Northern Blvd with rush hour traffic in both directions. In a hysterical panic I ran right into the street trying to get my dog. I held my hands up hoping we did not get hit and not caring for my own safety. Dr May stood in the driveway just watching?! My dog ran back toward the building where the doctor grabbed him and I grabbed him to loop the leash around his neck. The vet dragged him inside. All could've been prevented if these people let there clients drop their animals off in the back. Dangerous spot to drop off your pets and be careful how their being brought it. Brought my 16 year old Retriever/Chow TEDI Sunday after he collapsed and couldn't stand. Dr May first pulled him out of my car by the Neck, TEDI screaming in pain. We listened, as he suggested keeping TEDI overnight for many tests. Emotionally stressed, we still saw no need for all this. Our TEDI was Blind now, no hearing and although had carried on bravely, we knew a decision had to be made to LET HIM GO. Much heated words later Dr finally agreed to an X-ray and then told us he had an internal tumor, agreed finally to our wishes. This was not our regular Vet who was a blessing Dr Vila at Merrick Vet She has saved our TEDI twice,once surgery on a growth on his leg and then after urinating blood, TRYING an antibiotic giving him more time How sad that our last memory is now of him screaming in pain read more

Once in a while, one finds someone who truly deserves the title 'hero'. They don't wear capes, tights or bold letters on their chests, my hero wears a sport shirt with a white coat over it. Let me tell you about Roxanne's vet, Dr. May. When Rox was 9 yrs old, about 2 1/2 yrs ago, I was told she had a heart murmur. The cardiologist vet prescribed enalapril and said 'see you in a year'. When I took her for a follow up at my old vet, I didn't see him, I saw his 'associate'. When asked about Roxanne's prognosis, this twit told me 'she'll probably live a year'. It was like a jolt to my heart. I cried all the way home, my little girl lying on the seat next to me, looking at me with that 'what's wrong mommy' expression they get. I told some friends and the son of one of my friends said, 'Go see Dr. May.' Best thing I ever did! When told what the twit told me, he said, 'Young, recently graduated from vet school? Let me just say this...bullshit! I'm not going to let this girl die. How's that!' And he didn't. Yes, Roxanne has been taking three pills every morning and night, and after a month of wheezing, I brought her to see him yesterday. After an X-ray, Dr May told me that she has, as she always had, the curse of the breed, a collapsed trachea. This is the reason we hear that goose cough they do. But age does make it worse. Dr. May said we have two options, we can try a new med that helps open the bronchial tubes, and if that doesn't work, there are two veterinary surgeons who are very successful putting a shunt into the trachea. They are Cornell grads like he is, and perfected doing this method microscopically. Yesterday, I started Rox on the new meds, yup, she now gets four pills twice a day, (she's catching up to me). Today, my old girl ran around like a puppy, playing with toys she hasn't touched in months. Yes, Virginia, there are heroes in this world! read more

We have been using RGVG since the early 1990's. We love and respect Dr May, Dr Marder, Dr Villa, the front desk staff, vet techs, groomers as well as all the prior staff. Everyone we've had contact with has been kind, caring, courteous and compassionate. We are rescuers and are up to our 31st rescue. Dec 30, 2019 & Jan 10, 2020 we had to put down 2 of our pets - that makes 22 that we had to put down. RGVG is with us every step of the way. Never doing unnecessary procedures, always trying to find a less expensive medication but we all know the cost of vet care is very expensive, but it is well worth it. They never have lied to us about the condition of one of our babies - even when the only answer is there is nothing more they or anyone can do. They will always refer us to a specialist if they feel that is what is required (& they have and we have gone). We love our pets and we would never take them somewhere that we didn't 10000% trust. I took my Wheaten Terrier to this vet on the recommendation of other pet owners in the area but Dr Jonathan May is a disgrace. He failed to diagnose my dog's mange despite two separate office visits. My dog was in agony. Eventually I took her to a canine dermatologist who spotted the problem immediately. Mange is highly treatable. He said our vet should have picked it up as it is has become very common in this area, spread by foxes. This was not his first mistake. It was his third and final. I came to Jon for a second opinion after my vet in the city recommended $1,000 surgery for my cat. Jon was kind and knowledgable, and explained to me which aspects of the $1k bill were legit and which were excessive. He was thorough in explaining his decision making, which I greatly appreciate. The rest of the staff was also extremely sweet and really seem to care about my cat. I adopted a rescue dog six weeks ago today. Three days later, I brought my dog, River, to Dr. May - as a result of numerous friends' and family' recommendations (including one friend who is very involved in animal rescue). He obviously loves animals, as he was very gentle and kind to my dog. He checked him over, cut his nails, gave him a vaccination and talked to me (and him) and was not concerned with time or getting rid of me to take care of the next "patient". The staff was very nice and we talked about rescues, dogs, cats and everything in between while I was in the waiting room. The place was immaculate. I'm sorry these other reviewers had bad experiences, but my two visits there were a pleasure. During the second visit, River was hanging out lying on the floor while we all talked. I've been taking my two cats to Dr May for about 3 years now. He's always super polite, informative, and up front. I love that he explains things without talking down to you. When I first brought my youngest cat to him she'd been misdiagnosed with an unidentifiable mass that I'd been told by our prior vet must be cancerous because of the size, and they were trying to rush us into surgery. Not being the type to do anything without a 2nd opinion I brought her to Dr May (recommended by a friend of mine). In about an hour he diagnosed her with a non-working kidney, was totally upfront about the cost, and within 2-3 weeks she had the surgery. When we brought her home we were amazed to see her so bouncy and affectionate (something she hadn't been since we adopted her and her brother) and that drove home for us just how long she must've been suffering with that. We're now devoted patients of this office, and wouldn't dream of taking our cats anywhere else. Highly recommended!!! read more

The doctors are first class in their ethics and the support staff is as well. The concern for every animal that enters the hospital is sincere and heartfelt. Sister K, here's a question for you...If a child were ill and could be cured would you prefer that it die because it requires extra love and patience? When an animal is sick but can be saved, shouldn't it be? Animals shouldn't be put down because they require a little extra care and love.
