In the fall, I try to stop in weekly and pick up a couple gallons of cider and bag of apple- we go through a couple gallons of cider a week. It's THAT amazing. The family that runs the place is wonderful- they always remember us and have gone above and beyond for me a few times when I was running late and wasn't able to make it to their store before closing. My kids love the large open play area- safe, lots of toys, swings, cars to drive and sandboxes with a gazebo for parents. They have a tower to climb with a beautiful view to look for birds and wildlife. They also have a large selection of pumpkins that are reasonably priced. It's a just a great place to come for half the day and hang out with my kids. A true gem in Concord run by a wonderful family, This place is so unique and special to me. The drive up to Canterbury and through the town is absolutely gorgeous, and traffic levels stay relatively low. Hackleboro boasts acres of apple trees of many different varieties -- McIntosh, Cortland, Red and Gold Delicious, Puritan, Empire, and Northern Spy (call for availability). Long-handled pickers are provided, and the management requests that patrons refrain from climbing trees. They also have pick-your-own blueberries, peaches, strawberries, and other fruit (when in season), as well as a farm stand with freshly-made apple pies, apple cobblers, home-made cider, honey, maple syrup and candies, flowers, cookbooks, pumpkins, and lots more. Everything looks and tastes wonderful, and I make a special trip up whenever I can during the fall because of the sheer quality as well as my belief that it's important to support local farmers and family-run businesses. I know the family that runs the orchard, and they give the utmost care to the trees and animals under their watch. Speaking of the animals, there's a goat pen and some rabbits, as well as a horse, some chickens, and a number of farm cats and dogs. The farm is extremely family-friendly and bringing children and (leashed!) pets is encouraged. There are even free tractor rides on weekends! There is also an observation deck at the front of the orchard -- it boasts vistas of the mountains superior to anything else I've seen in the area. Treat yourself to a trip to Hackleboro Orchards. (There's a farm stand in Boscawen, too, and the farm attends various fairs each year, including the largely popular Deerfield Fair.) Advertised "multiple vendors" and there were 2 vendors under tents. It was a complete ghost town. A band was playing to absolutely no one. The cows we saw were completely COVERED in flies where I couldn't even see some of their faces with the layers of flies, on top of flies covering them...they looked absolutely miserable. What a cash grab. This event should have been canceled and refunded. Being unprepared is one thing...falsely advertising it at a grand event when there was nothing and no one is a different thing all together.
