There is a skate park and a disc golf course in this park as well as a large pavilion. There are (steep) steps up to the road just behind the Virginia Museum of Natural History. The actual hiking path is rather steep also. In our group, those that could not manage a steep hike used the pave roads to cover the same distance.

The stretch of the Riverwalk Trail is really cool here. The nice paved path runs along the banks of the Dan River where you can take nice stroll on foot or by bike, the have a bike share station where you can rent a bike to ride by downloading an app on your smartphone and by following a few instructions on the app you'll be 2 wheelin' it down by the river in a jiffy. They also allow horseback riding on the Riverwalk Trail. This is a really nice oark to check out.

The trains are periodically audible through the greenery but are hard to see. Nonetheless, the park has some nice vistas and handy facilities, and it is free.

During our hike, we spotted quite a few deer walking past us (in close proximity), so that was exciting. The trails weren't difficult, but be prepared to walk up some sketchy spots if it's wet out. A walking path goes past a number of rose bushes and there are a few benches. There is also a great view of the James River valley from here. The caption reads, "Mr. Elder's Rose Garden. Lawrence Lloyd Elder (1896-1964) was a valued employee of the City of Lynchburg for over 34 years. His special domain was gardening and his responsibility the greenhouses in Miller Park where the city's flowers were raised for use in the parks. Later he was assigned the care of nearby municipal properties, including Monument Terrace, the Court House, the Post office and the roses in the Confederate Cemetery. In the adjoining remote area he also tended his personal garden of roses, which brought much pleasure to the many city employees in the area. In 1986, twenty-two years after Mir. Elder's death, the Blue Ridge Rose Society, in cooperation with the City of Lynchburg, undertook the revitalization of the garden as a Bicentennial Project. The Garden now serves as a depository of old Lynchburg Roses, all of which are known to have been grown and loved by the people of Lynchburg during its 200 year history."
