We were a group of 20+ people including 6 children. We arrived around 4:45pm, and were told the area wasn't ready yet, and had to wait in the front as piles of people started arriving all at the same time, with very few people actually being seated. We were brought to the back of the restaurant and given 2 of the 3 tables in that section (even though our host was told we'd have a private dining area). They then crammed 11 people at an 8 person table next to us. It took 20 minutes for a server to even take drink orders. I am 95% sure our drinks did not have any alcohol in them. The children were served last. There were no straws, and the syrups in the cocktails all settled at the bottom. Then time to order meals. Shortly after we did, plates of food came out, but none of them were actually our food. Finally our food did arrive and there was a lot of confusion about what belonged to who, as they were saying ingredients that weren't meant to be included (serving my mother a Philly steak "with smoked meat" which wasn't ordered, but also didn't have smoked meat at all). They brought children the wrong pizzas, my steak, ordered medium, was over by quite a bit. My Monte Carlo potato, however, was excellent, and my Caesar salad tasted good but had far too much dressing. My neighbour's smoked meat had bread so stale you could play drums on the table with it and the meat was different colours as it had dried out. My brother ordered a crispy chicken poutine, was delivered a hamburger, that they claimed was a chicken burger. To their credit, they brought out the poutine very quickly, but still charged me for the chicken burger, which was $5 more than the poutine (according to my brother), but it wasn't worth the time it would have taken to try to get it fixed. Down the table from me, the wrong potatoes were delivered and had to be replaced. About halfway through the meal, we were told that there would not be another party, so we didn't have to rush out, but with service taking as long as it did at the beginning, it was already an anxious experience. At one point, after the guest of honour waited 45 minutes for a drink, but having no server in sight, as our section was cut off from the rest of the restaurant and no way to make eye contact with anyone to indicate we needed something, our host got up and went directly to the bar to order the drink. There was one bartender for a full restaurant who very firmly said she could not take orders from customers. Ok, no problem. The server then came over and scolded our host for speaking to the bartender. We were also informed by a food runner (of which there were at least 5) that our server had two full sections, and no one to help. We left at 7:40pm, generally dissatisfied.

The burger patties were the smallest I've ever had and the coleslaw was tasteless. My partner had the fish dinner and the fish was too moist and not cooked properly. Our group enjoyed a 3 course meal and thoroughly loved all the foods we sampled. My main course of filet mignon was probably the most tender and delicious steak I've ever had. The garlic mashed potatoes, truffle fries and loaded baked potato were equally delicious. For those who got seafood, the flavors and cook were on point as well. In terms of decor, service and food, 40 West checked all the right boxes. If you are looking to celebrate a special occasion or want to feel like royalty, this is the place to be. Of course, there is a price tag - I found certain items quite expensive for value. Example the burrata appetizer with 3 slices of tomatoes, this was $31. When you add on a main meal or drinks and desert it can easily reach $300 for two people. I am not someone who is used to fine dining so this was a bit out of reach but worth it for a celebration. The waiter told us they only had 1 beer, a "blanc" on tap, so we ordered that and a side of House Fries (cooked in tallow) as a snack. Looking at the menu, they do specialize in wines more than beers and steaks (most of them over $50)...they also had seafood dishes. The fries were good, the beer was light and refreshing. Definitely devoured the slices quickly and gnawed on the rib bone before the server took the remains of this dish away. LOL. I never thought I'd say white asparagus was decadent but it surely was when topped with the sauce. The 15 layer cake can honestly be skipped as it was the thinnest slice of cake I've ever seen. LOL. It was impressive that they could even slice cake that thinly!!! The waitstaff service was great with suggestions to round out the meal perfectly. My entire Montreal trip was planned around getting this reservation. The food here is good. It reminds me of what restaurants used to do; cook for enjoying instead of just paying the bills. When you start to cook for just the money, you lose the risk taking and excitement from the food. Firstly, the restaurant is very hot. They need to check their AC or maybe they're just choosing to be very European. But that aside our waiter was very good and friendly. He really helped make our dinner fun and memorable. The beef tartare was ok. The sweetbreads were probably the best I've ever had anywhere. The double down is their riff on the KFC sandwich where they used two pieces of fried chicken as bread, instead these guys used two pieces of fried foie gras. It's rich, fatty, and delicious. You do not want to eat more than what they've given but it was every bit enjoyable. The pasta and sausages were good as well. But the strawberry sorbet dessert was so damn good and exactly what I needed to cool down. I had a great experience and highly recommend Joe Beef.
