This area is a food desert in general. This is the only grocery store for quite a large area. Yes, there are many small convenience stores around, but the prices are high. The residential area surrounding this grocery store is a small pocket of nicer homes, and large stretches of lower income areas. This area was hit hard by Hurricane Katrina, but 12 years later, this is the only grocer in the near area. Rouses is famous for being Louisiana owned and based. This location is reasonably priced. Though I don't come here often as I moved out of the area, this was my store when I did live nearby. Clean, wide aisles, inventory well stocked, clean restrooms are the pride of this location. There is on occasion a bird that is trapped inside and flies through the rafters. The beer and wine section is quite impressive. The decorated cakes look wonderful. The deli area looks ok, though I have not purchased anything from it. They do have a wonderful section of NOLA themed items (t-shirts, earrings and the like).

Just chilling. Probably laying eggs. No big deal!

Should have went to the Rouses near my house. I decided to stop by this location while hubby played soccer to save us some time. I like how this rouses is in the cut. However, this place just screams dead and dirty. I received many stares from men and women. Makes you feel a tad bit uncomfortable, but whatever you would think I would be used to it. I knew I wanted to stock up on Salmon. I went to the seafood department and saw how dirty the pre cut selection was, so I decided to let them cut a fresher selection for me. I went for the Soho wild caught salmon, but to my right I saw a fly sitting on a piece of cod fish. I was disgusted and didn't want to be rude while the man was always cutting my selection. The employee name who helped me is Freeland. His customer service was okay... didn't seem excited to be at work, but who would be if they worked at this particular Rouses. But let me tell y'all... his shirt, hat, and apron was soooooo damn dirty. Looks like he hasn't washed it since he starting work there. Then he had the nerves to cough while asking me what I needed. He didn't even wash his hands. He put gloves on like nothing even happened. Instantly I knew that I would be scrubbing my salmon to it's bare atoms and placing it in a bowl with bleach (lol not literally) as soon as I got home. I will NEVER buy fresh produce & fish at this location. EVER!!! Actually, I'll probably never be back. Moral of the story: only come here if you are desperate or in the need of processed food. I wouldn't trust them with fresh food.

This store is going through a redesign, and that is great news for this area! They're beefing up the wine selection. 'Nuff said. :-)

You gotta come to fresh market on Thursdays for the $5 bistro meals!!! (Beware they do sell out of…read moresome items.) They also have a hot plate meal where you can get a rotisserie chicken, two sides, and 6 rolls - feed 4-6 people. (Perfect amount for 3 people sized family in my opinion.). Depends on the portion sizes your family eats. Either way, great last minute meal ideas after a long day of work. Or for your lunch break! The workers are all really polite here, but the checkout line is not fast so make sure to get a basket or cart to make waiting in line easier. It is always clean in here, and they always have lots of fresh produce. Plus a convenient parking lot.

The staff, especially at checkout, always seem to be friendly and upbeat, which is nice. The pre-prepared foods, snacks, drink choices, bakery and deli are typically better than most, sometimes better than the larger Whole Foods on Magazine St. here. And, they have an amazing floral section at the back entrance. There's a convenient parking lot that wraps around the back and downtown side of the building, but the spaces can be tight, especially with a SUV size vehicle. This time I grabbed some coffee, bread, brownies, and wine. Unfortunately, I found many of the aisles and sections not stocked very well. The bakery section had very little product as did several other places. Just empty bins and shelves. Hmmmm? It is the beginning of Mardi Gras season so plenty of King Cake and specialty vodka. Nonetheless, I do like this store. Fun fact- this used to be the Bultman Funeral Home, in a classic building on the corner of St. Charles and Louisiana Streets. Yes, indeed, a mortuary as well.

During the first week of January, my lifelong friend visited Plush Appeal to purchase Mardi Gras decor for her out of state home. We are natives of New Orleans and were raised with the proper etiquette and respect for ourselves, others and community. We are proud graduates of an affluent Catholic high school and our class of women has made quite a positive impact in this world collectively. With that said, as my friend was shopping she interacted with one of the sales associates and had a lovely conversation. This particular sales associate then left the area. Within minutes two other sales associates approached my friend, accused her of stealing, and when my friend attempted to clear her name and prove her innocence, these women refused. They stated she was on camera and despite my friend asking multiple times for proof and to view the cameras, she was again refused her request. Apparently, two large men were then instructed to escort her out to which she stated she felt extremely uncomfortable. Several of her friends have reached out to the store. Ms. Vee was so nice! CeeCee though ... the manager... when I called to ask for clarification she became nasty and hung up. Long story short, nothing was stolen. If that were the case why not call the police or show the video? Most importantly to note are the differences in skin tones. My friend is an upper class African American female who was seemingly targeted for the color of her skin. Take your business elsewhere!
