Things to know..... this is a very small office and the doctor works alone with the help of the vet techs - they are NOT an ER (and will tell you so) so if you are not already a patient and your pet is having an emergency you should go to an emergency hospital. If you expect an office run like a brand new vet center you won't find it here but what you will find is the great vet service, at reasonable prices, and care like you may have experienced from vet back in the day. I just cannot say enough about Route 20 Animal Clinic, Dr. Nick Kotsopolous, and staff, especially Colleen. My parents and I have been taking our pets to the clinic for over 20 years. Dr. Nick is so caring, patient, and understanding. Often he's returning calls until 8pm and has given his personal cell phone number if there are any issues post sedation, regardless of procedure. From tumor removal surgery to dental cleaning he calls to check on our pets. He will also ask about how my parents are doing and their pets when I go for a visit with mine. Colleen is fantastic with grooming. My long haired cats would get shaved in the summer so they were more comfortable and she always made them look so adorable and smell so nice. She's also so kind and compassionate, plus prompt with returning calls. If there is a specialized surgery Dr. Nick can't do, he has always referred me to excellent surgeons. For end of life issues, the staff are above and beyond caring and loving. This doctor truly seems to love his work and it will be such a loss whenever he does retire. Dr. Nick truly cares for his furry patients. One of my cats had abscess in her tail area (got bitten by neighbor's cat). He drained it to check and yes she had lot of puss coming out and told me - she might need a surgery but gave us antibiotics that night to observe. Two days later, on our surgery day abscess seemed to be lower. He took her in for couple of hours, and I had to run an errand so I left. Got a call back within half an hour telling me she doesn't need surgery, seems to be alright. I was truly expecting to spend couple of hundred dollars there but amazed with their honesty and care for their pets. We got back home, finished the rounds of antibiotics and kitty is back to her old self! He even called us twice personally to ask about kitty's health. Dr. Nick was very thorough, my pup has an extensive medical history & almost died a year ago-- he listened to everything I had to say about it... ( I am, admittedly ocd about my fur baby) I thought (based on what my previous vet told me) my doggo needed teeth pulled- which, would make dr. Nick money-- he said "it's tarter. It's not something we need to do right now." When I was leaving he said " have you tried to brush his teeth at home?...That could solve the problem" I could write more, but it doesn't seem necessary- as someone who has dealt with sick pets, Dr.Nick is thorough, but realistic, about what people can afford If I had to complain? (Which I'm not) it's wait time- my appt was 10:15, I was seen around 10:40. But I will take that over incomplete care. read more

Dr. Nick has been my vet for well over 10 years now. He cares about the animals as if they are his own. He works independently so you will get the one on one attention needed that you will not get at other vet clinics. He takes the time to answer all of your questions and some times your wait times are longer than usual because he takes that time with each client during visits. The staff at Rt. 20 are incredible! Kind, knowledgeable, compassionate, reasonable, and truly invested in your animal's health and well being. Many other reviews discuss wait time. I have had many experiences where we've been seen immediately and several experiences where we've had to wait. Dr. K is the sole vet, he takes his time with his patients when they need it, and he's clearly very knowledgeable with lots of experience and shows a dedication to the animals in his care (I'd rather wait than have animals in need turned away!) He referred us to a different vet for a surgical procedure he didn't have the facility to perform himself. He's honest, trustworthy, and reasonable. Some other reviews have mentioned that sometimes Dr. K doesn't make eye contact or hold an ongoing conversation - I've noticed that this seems to lessen over time once he gets to know you, but for someone so knowledgeable and dedicated to animals, his comfort with eye contact is so low on my list of concerns!! However, he has never been rude. They are very animal focused, and whenever I've called with a question they have answered me quickly, including Dr. K emailing me outside of business hours. They are very reasonably priced (less than every vet we've compared with) and they clearly put everything into caring for the animals. We've been going to Dr. K for almost 20 years now, and I cannot say enough good things about his clinic and staff. The techs/support staff are nothing but kind, compassionate, and accommodating. They've fit us in when we've had real emergencies. And, to that end, if I have to wait a few minutes sometimes because they're following a triage model (just like the human ER) then so be it. I'd rather know my animals are receiving the best care from one of the most knowledgeable vets I've met. I booked an appointment, My cat literally died in my arms while they had me wait. I panicked, they only confirmed she was dying and they still charged me $60 when they did nothing. Me and my dog went there for 2 years and in that two years my dog developed hip displaisa and he gave her aspirin and a hip medicine not even mentioning she would need a $10,000 surgery someday. He shows no affection towards the animals and half the time you need to help him hold your pet on the table. the rates are extremely high and he is not worth it. Dr. Nick has been my vet for close to 20 years now. He is an excellent veterinarian with a great passion for the health and well being of animals. He runs an independently owned practice, and he doesn't nickel and dime you with all of the small costs that other corporate owned practices do. This place is small and very reasonably priced. I've been bringing my cat here for a long time, mainly because she freaks out with car rides and this place is right around the corner from my apartment, very convenient. Dr. Kotsopoulas is very thorough and very good about calling quickly with test results and things of that nature. My only complaint is they always seem to be running behind schedule. It's not uncommon for me to get there on time for an appointment and then be waiting 30 to 45 minutes past my appointment time (with my cat in the carrier, freaking out the entire time). Also, since the place is so small, it can be difficult to get someone on the phone if I call. If there's only one person at the front desk and Dr. Kotsopoulas needs her to assist him with something, there's no one available to answer the phone. But they are very quick to return messages, which is great. read more

Dr. Nick's office took us right away, my Yorkie had an eye abrasion and my regular vet was unavailable. Guess who my regular vet is now??? I very much like the smallness of his office and his directness. The wait was nominal and I thought Dr. Nick was very thorough and attentive and the cost was very reasonable. Went here because I wan't able to get into my regular vet right away...I took my cat here for fleas only to be told she has fleas....ok, that's what I said, told what I could do, did it all nothing worked. Brought her back a few months later, again told what I can do for her, didn't work, $400.00 later took her to her regualar vet, left with 3 different meds and a spray for the house, $287.00 but at least it's working. She was so bad when I took her in she was ripping her hair out and had bloody sores, wasn't her friendly self and wasn't eating right. I will never go back to Rte 20 again, I will wait the extra day for her regular vet if I have to. read more

When you come in you're awkwardly rushed out. The way the vet works is awkwardly robotic and he's very irritable and unapproachable. He seems to know his subject fairly well so I wouldn't have written a review except I was utterly shocked by one piece of highly unprofessional and negligent conduct. After quickly giving my dog his shots he wantonly chucked the used needles in the bin in the way a high school kid basketballs a wad of paper into to the trash. That's fine for a wad of paper, but if the needle had missed by an inch it would have hit my leg. I wanted a no frills old fashioned vet. If this is what you want then you have found it here at Route 20 Animal Clinic. I brought my dogs there for a check up and vaccinations. Got that done. Dr. K, does not have the best bedside manner, as he talks very little, and doesn't even acknowledge your pet. Back to you most of the time as he diddles with stuff on the counter or on the computer. But still, prices are reasonable, and expectations of you the owner are minimal...UNTIL I needed to make the horrible, heartbreaking decision to put my little dog down due to sever aggression. He had bitten and broken skin on my young child twice (not little bites either...we are talking muscle and fat exposed). I called, and explained, through tears, what I had decided, and they would not help. I explained that I loved my dog...he was my best buddy and I was horrified to be in the position, but he was going to keep biting and hurting people. Shelters wouldn't take him, I could not re-home him because of his aggression. I was told that until I tried with a Veterinary Behaviorist (minimum cost $125 for 40 minutes for at least 6-8 weeks with NO guarantee of results) they would not help me. Despite my dogs obvious fear and anxiety causing him to attack anyone and everyone Despite the injuries he already caused Somehow my dogs life was more important than the safety of my family and children, and any stranger just happens to walk by. I went to the humane society who agreed with me that my dog was definitely a danger to anyone BUT me, an the most humane thing was to put him down. They gave me a name and number, and thankfully another vet who understood that I absolutely loved my dog so much, but the safety of the family and the public had to come first. I held him in my arms and cried and cried as he was put peacefully to sleep. I will cry for a long time. This is such a hard decision. A legal decision. I should not have felt so judged by the staff at this clinic, and I should have been helped in some way. They didn't even offer any referral etc... read more

Dr. K is a wonderful vet. He is gentle, thorough with the exams and you can tell he really cares about the animals. I had read the yelp reviews before making an appointment, so I knew that there might be a wait once I got there. I did end up waiting for a little bit when I arrived, but it didn't bother me once I met with him and witnessed the high level of service he provided. When Eli (my cat) had worms, they fit me in that day, and he was cured by the morning after. I went here for rabies shots. Being new to the area I didn't know much so I went off these reviews. Horrible experience. First I had to wait 1/2 hour then the dr came out said sorry for the wait(while looking away from me) asked if my dogs were nice. Didn't say hi to them, pet them, nothing. It's a little confusing to find (it's on a highway, either right before or after and underpass depending upon which way you are driving), but I would say this clinic is really worth the effort. This clinic is warm and welcoming and thorough. My cat had diarrhea for several days, I took him in and they gave him a good checkup, as well as dealing with the medical problem. The staff and doctor is very friendly. The doctor was gentle and very good about explaining everything he was doing and what it would mean for my cat. Yes, go see this vet. I have been going there for a very long time, I never noticed the wait because it seems to be a normal thing there but this time I did. It was my cat's first time there and I had to wait one hour, my appointment was at 11 and I got in at 12. He kept getting interrupted by the nurse with other patients questions, and never even looked at me to explain what my cat has. All I got was "sorry for the wait while he finishes with another animal's file on his computer". My cat had debris in her ears and he started to clean them (he cleaned them about 50% then told me to get medication for her ears). So I have to wait an hour to get in, then in 10 minutes of him seeing my cat, quickly and barely even paying attention to her, makes $140. Good gig. Again, I have been going for many years to take my dog, I don't want to say they're a bad clinicor that he is not nice. But they need to not overbook because for the money we pay, I think we deserve a little more attention (our animals). They do need to work on their customer service and understand that everybody's time is VALUABLE also. Worst part that made me realize this and that I am writing this review, is that there was a couple waiting after me, they were putting their loving dog down, and they could not stop crying. He made them wait ONE HOUR in agony, the dog kept looking at me, that absolutely broke my heart and I was crying with them. Work on having everybody go in on time, clean the area before you see a new animal (as the table where i put my cat was full of another's cats fur!) and please, give people the time they deserve and the money you charge them. While recently visiting family in Worcester, my dog Toby started to get very sick. We thought he had hurt himself because he seemed to shake in pain, and howl everytime we picked him up. I was recommended to Route 20 Animal clinic. I didn't have an appointment and happily agreed to wait. The clinic seemed to be very busy that day, and I stated up-front that I was from out of town and that Dr. Kotsopolous had not seen my dog in the past. The staff thankfully worked me into their schedule to see Toby. It wasn't long before they had him on the table to examine him. They were gentle and understanding that he was terrified. Dr. K. found the problem in Toby's ear of a severe infection. He thoroughly explained to me the cause and prevention of ear infections, especially in hound dogs with floppy ears. He cleaned out his ear and then walked me through the care and medication. I was absolutely impressed with the bed-side manner of this Doctor. Route 20 Animal Clinic did not charge me an outrageous fee for care, or because I didn't have an appointment. I returned to Washington D.C. on Sunday. Dr. K. called me this morning (4 days after seeing Toby) to check on Toby. I was almost shocked that he called. Again, I'm not an everyday patient, live out-of-state, and Dr. K. had no obligation to check on Toby. He wanted to make sure his ear was healing, and to see if I had any other questions. He then wished me a very heartfelt "Merry Christmas." I am so thankful for such a passionate and caring Vet. Very slow. You will always have to wait for more than 30 mins even though you have an appointment. Very old facility. The scale has to restart a couple of times to work. The vet and front desk are too old to update their facilities, since they will retire soon. They dnt care about buying new machines. Very cramped and dark physical environment too. The vet himself is too old to understand your needs. Told him a couple of times that my dog does not need a rabies shot, but he still tried to inject it into my dog and charge it. I gotta watch it and stop him. I knew it! And he even doesn't believe it. He just trusted his experiences. Also the front desk has too many files in storage and doesn't know how to simplify the paper work in a modern computer system. She looks like a hoarder to me. Also I dnt like its location.
