Please do NOT support this agency.! One of our cats got out. Took a few days to find out it had been picked up by our local Animal Control. After just 5 days they transferred it to a Rescue. The process was so secretive that Animal Control would not even tell me the name of the rescue service. After some serious digging I found out the cat had been transferred to Rover Rescue. They're almost 900 miles away even though we have several rescues within 50 miles. I immediately called Rover Rescue and found out they did have the cat and that it will be going to an adoption event this weekend. They REFUSED to tell me where the event was being held. I wasn't trying to get preferential treatment. I just wanted to have an equal opportunity to re-adopt this cat that has lived with me for the last year and a half and they refused to tell me where it was. Clearly they are not interested in getting animals back with loving families. I really hope it ends up with a good family but it was a stray I took off the streets. It had settled into our family very well. Now they are going to make the cat go through that again. It's also very concerning to me about how secretive the process is, even the name of the organization. Don't know anything about them except today's very inadequate interaction but that level of secrecy is not a good sign. read more

I actually found my puppy at the Carson shelter. I knew instantly we were soulmates. Much to my dimise I found out that Foxy (Formerly Tessie) was on hold by a rescue. I can't tell you how much I hoped the rescue wouldn't pick her up and she'd be all mine. But Rover Rescue did come to her rescue. I called them minutes after finding out she had left the shelter. I had to leave a message and I figured I'd get the ball rolling and fill out the application. Kathy returned my call promptly we spoke about the dog. And several days later I picked up my girl from the Vet. Kathy was very helpful and thoughtful with her advice. Foxy came with a leash and a collar and we were given a bag of food to get us started. I love this organization, they do amazing work rescuing IMO the most adorable pooches. I want another one but I don't think Ms. Foxy is ready for a buddy quite yet. IMO the rescue fee is comparable and totally fair. You get a itemized list of all the fees they pay while the dog in their care. You don't have an obligation to pay those fees but it really did show me how much money it does take to save these animals. read more

Rover rescue is an amazing organization. Kathy and James do an excellent job placing the dogs they rescue into homes...they really did a thorough check of our home and James offered us so many great tips and good advice for our dog Finn prior to his adoption being finalized. Finn came with all shots up-to-date, got his advantage the day of adoption, got some food to start him off with, came with a leash & collar, and was microchipped. We also got a lot of helpful information, including a cd to watch to help us through this transition process with him. James also really helped us out when Finn was first adjusting to our new home, he gave us some great tips when Finn initally had a bit of separation anxiety when we would leave the house. After trying a couple different techniques recommended by James, Finn was cured of this in no time :) Finn has been such an amazing pleasure to have around our home. Everyone absolutely adores him and he has been the easiest dog to train...he's a fast learner, he gobbles up new commands in a matter of seconds! He just recently graduated from his PetSmart obedience training with flying colors. We only hope that we are able to rescue from Rover Rescue again... we had such great luck with Finn and our experience with Rover Rescue that we will definitely look to them when the time comes to get another dog. Highly knowledgable staff, keep their rescue dogs on leashes (not crates or pens) and wearing bandanas during adoption events, have pack walks each week, and they hold fundraising events each year. We love Rover Rescue! Here's our story: I began corresponding with Cathy Rubin about a certain dog in late 2004 (I think...) as I was getting married, moving to the South Bay and wanted to add a pet to the family ASAP. The dog I was emailing with Cathy about had been adopted, so a week after we were married, in 2005, my husband and I visited the foster home of a sweet dog who turned out to be VERY attached to her foster family. Cathy called immediately after we'd met the dog and apologized that it wasn't a good match. She said she'd just picked up an adorable, sweet shih tzu from a shelter and she would be at the adoption event at Centinela Feed the next day! We went to the event, anxious to meet this dog who might become our own, and there was Lucy (then Suki), completely shaved (because her hair had been so long, matted and dirty), with a large pink sweater on! I sat down, she jumped in my lap, and the rest is history! We owe a thousand thank yous to Cathy and Rover Rescue. Not only for the love they have for these precious dogs, but for going above and beyond to try to match us with the perfect pooch. Rover Rescue does not mess around. Three years ago - I was looking for a dog and contacted Rover Rescue. They are true matchmakers when it comes to matching canines with the right home! I had contacted Rover Rescue and told them that we were looking for a sweet little FUN dog. I have allergies - so hopefully one I would not be allergic to. We were fortunate enough to be able to foster a dog that we eventually adopted. They had rescued our dog Trixie from the Carson shelter. They made sure she would be a good fit - by interviewing us and coming by our home. This organization is professional, caring and topnotch. I can't recommend them enough! We decided it was time to get a dog and we new that we wanted to adopt one from a dog pound. We wanted a lab or a golden retriever because we have young children and they are good with them. Thank goodness for Rover Rescue! We found our pooch, Reggie on line at the Rover Rescue site (he had been on death row at the Carson shelter when Cathy rescued him). Cathy met my daughter and I at the Vet's in Redondo and let us all get to know each other. We really loved him right from the beginning. Reggie came with a collar and leash and he has one of those chips implanted in his shoulder, in case he ever gets lost. We've been a happy family including Reggie for coming up on 6 years now and we can't imagine life without him. I highly recommend Rover Rescue for anyone who wants a new dog! read more

We adopted a dog from Rover Rescue a few months ago and were assured she was spayed. We found out that she was not spayed and when we contacted the rescue they tried to deny any knowledge of this. We went over to the Carson shelter where they told us they rescued her from originally and got paperwork showing that she was not spayed and that the rescue was aware of this. This paperwork was also ripped out of the packet of papers the rescue gave us when we adopted her. Our dog was adopted out to a family before us and they returned her, meaning she was adopted twice without being spayed. The rescue required us to take her to their vet to be spayed and were not helpful at all in facilitating this, despite this whole mess being their error. This was a disappointing experience, but overall we are happy to provide our dog with a loving home. She is laying in her bed recovering from her surgery, but this should have been done before she was ever adopted out to anyone. read more

I went to Rover rescue on a Saturday and fell in love with a little dog I knew I had to have. I filled out the adoption papers and talked to James in person about my interest in the dog. He said he would call me back within the next week to view my home. In that next week I never got a call. So I called him (no answer) and left a detailed voice mail stating that I was still very interested in the dog and wanted to know what the status was. He never returned my call. I again called the week after and SURPRISE...no answer. My calls were never returned and I later found out that the dog I wanted was adopted to another home. I was VERY disappointed with Rover Rescue's communication skills and their lack of interest in my desire for this dog, a simple call back would have been nice. read more

I highly recommend Rover Rescue. We rescued our dog there about a month ago and she is amazing. We don't know what we did before we had her! I was looking for rescues online and was frustrated with the lack of information and lots of misinformation about what dogs they had available and when they were having adoption events (if at all). We were interested in a lab mix and saw one on Rover Rescue's website. We showed up at Centinela at 11AM and met the lab. They let us take her on a short walk to get to know her outside of all the distractions. We filled out an application and were told there would be a home inspection and James would call us after the event that day. So we went home anxiously awaiting a call. The event ran long but James called as soon as they were done and scheduled to come over to our house the next day. James was great! He brought over our dog, gave her a tour of the house and yard. Explained how we would want to handle her (crate training, regular training, food and feeding schedules, recommended vets, etc.). He even let us borrow a crate for the crate training. I am thankful to Michelle C. from Long Beach, who wrote a review on 3/29/2009. It will save me some time crafting this review. We have one, not two kids, but other than that, the experience was exactly the same. The experience with rescue dogs, the kid who has been accustomed to dogs from birth, the love at first sight with a dog that Rover Rescue was offering for adoption and the initially enthusiastic Rover Rescue staff. We experienced it all. And then, just like Michelle C. Cathy arrived at the eleventh hour, intervened, and told the dog trainer with whom we were discussing the way forward, that she was not comfortable giving us a shot at the dog. I'd like to point out that we stood less that two feet away, but she blatantly ignored us. This verdict was handed down despite the fact that the dog trainer seemed perfectly fine with us as an adoptive family, and no further explanation was given. An e-mail I later wrote was answered in boiler plate fashion, and the outcome did not change. It is a shame that rescue organisations have first dibs at dogs in many pounds. It turns people like Cathy into dog-Nazis: no pet for you ! We finally got our young dachshund, who is vast friends with our 4-year old. Our advice: don't deal with Rover Rescue if you have kids. Age, background etc. do not matter - they discriminate, as Michelle said, in a completely unreasonable way. read more
