DO NOT LEAVE YOUR BELOVED PET AT THIS HOUSE OF HORRORS!!! My dog went in for a routine grooming, an hour later I received a call saying there was an "accident, his tail was caught in a grinder." When I picked him up the story changed to "his tail was shut in a door." Our senior mini doxie had to endure emergency surgery to amputate 3 inches of his tail due to their negligence and no one knows for certain how this happened!! I was new in town. On my first visit I explained my dog was old and has arthuritis and needs TLC. Great groom first two times. Third time they called me to come get my dog because she was "flailing about" and got a bloody nose. I was told they did not have time to deal with her noncooperation. When I arrived to fetch her, she was combed out and only her face was shaved. She had blood on her face & chest. When I got her home I saw two nicks of skin on her neck were bleeding, not her nose. Initially felt bad about my dog's behavior. Now, I am very upset with the way they treated my poor old (16yo)dog and how the groomer was so rude to me when she called me to come pick her up. So, if your dog has no problems, you'll get a good groom here. If your dog needs any special consideration or care, maybe not so much. read more

I don't think we would be able to go on family vacations if it weren't for Rovers retreat! I have a large dog that is nervous in most situations since we got him from a rescue. He won't let unknown people pet him when we are on walks and the vet is not even able to touch him during appointments. However, when we take him to rovers retreat he is always excited. Goes to Jim or Melanie without any hesitation and is happy to be there! I've never seen my dog so comfortable with people outside of our household. I love that I don't worry about him being caged up all day either.Many times when I come to get him he is outside in the fenced in area with the other dog-friendly big dogs playing. He always comes home tired and happy. read more

I take my dog in for a nail trim often and they always do a very good, professional job. She comes out happy and tail, wagging every time.

I have used Rover's Retreat for over 3 years for grooming, daycare, and boarding. Primarily all good experiences (a few times we considered changing because of customer service) and our male skittish dog LOVES Jim. Yesterday morning I dropped dogs off at 7am for daycare and gave my pickup time before leaving - they are closed on Mondays, and you need to let them know when you'll pickup. When I showed up as scheduled to get them, Melanie came to the door. She was visibly angry the first time, cracked the door and told me she'd get Jim. Slammed the door in my face. 5 minutes later she came back, opened the door and told me "I don't even know why the f*ck you're here! Can't you read the f*cking sign?" I tried to explain that this was my pickup time - she told me "Get your own f*cking dogs, they are in the back. Lock the f*cking door when you leave!" No one else was inside the building and she walked through a door and slammed it - I looked around for my dogs but couldn't find them. Finally, 2 of my dogs came racing out at me and I heard Melanie screaming "Chill the f*ck out! Chill the f*ck out!", and I came around the corner to see her pinning one of the dogs to the ground with his collar, choking him. She immediately released him and told me she recently had a medical procedure and was having an episode; no one relayed my pickup time to her and pointed to the wall saying, "There's the f*cking leashes, lock the front f*cking door on your way out!" My dogs shook the entire ride home - as did I. Melanie did call me a few hours later and left a voice mail, wanting to discuss the episode and apologize. I returned her call this morning and was not given an acceptable apology or reason for her behaviors towards me or my dogs. She explained that she is having medical issues and shouldn't have been working yesterday, but also couldn't explain why she had one of the dogs pinned. At first, she couldn't even remember that happening, then she did remember, and it was because the dog was too excited and jumping on her and she was worried about her incision and needed to restrain him. This will forever be a "he said/she said" situation, but I can guarantee this particular dog was not overly excited by her presence. As I was leaving, I was met by another employee in the parking lot who told me there have been many outbursts by her lately. I will never step foot inside that building again. read more

My aunt has been taking the fam dog here for years. They have always done a great job and she smells PHENOMENAL when she returns and has the cutest little bandanas or bows. The staff there is always polite and professional and the decor is adorable. Did I mention they have cats to greet you and roaming around for some snuggles? Thats pretty cool. No experience on the boarding, but seems like a cool, clean place. The little monster always seems happy when we drop her off and pick her up and that's what means the most! We'll continue using Rovers retreat :) read more

We are relatively new to the area and used this place three times. The last time our dog was returned after we paid and he had a gouge in his fur. When I called back to find out what happened I was told by the owner, Melanie, that "well, I didn't just wake up this morning, look at my calendar and decide to screw up your dog's grooming. It was an accident! It happens!" No offer of an apology until I asked for one. Charged me full fee of $95 and suggested that, if I wasn't happy with that she would cancel our next appointment and I could never return to her shop. Wow! So, we found another experienced groomer, Stay & Obey ($75), and I called and cancelled. Beware. She has and attitude and doesn't like to be held accountable. If she treats people like this I can only imagine how she treats the dogs when no one is watching. read more

Do not bring your pets here. This place should be shut down. I brought my dog there for an overnight stay at the dog day care. When I got him back the next day, he was filthy, traumatized and injured. Upon further inspection of the conditions in which he had been subjected to, I learned they keep their dogs in kennels, not much bigger than the dog itself. With no blankets or comfort. Also it absolute wreaks in there and is disgusting and filthy. Worse conditions than even any pound or humane society. My dog hates being kenneled. When I asked them how he did, they told me they had a hard time getting him into the kennel. They had my phone number. They should have called me. I would have told them that he NEVER needs to be forced into a kennel. Using positive reinforcement he will go into the kennel on his own. The fact that they didn't call me is unacceptable. When I saw the way the woman handled my dog, I grew suspicious. She literally dragged him across the room by his collar. When I got him in the car he was shaking and he looked terrified. He didn't stop shaking until the next day and even then sometimes he had shaking episodes. After I bathed him I inspected him to find that he had what looked like abrasion burn marks on his chest, and his face was swollen and sensitive to the touch. Also, his neck was swollen. It is my suspicion that he was subjected to animal abuse. I will NEVER bring my dog there again. I suggest you do not support this business and bring your animals elsewhere. Stay and Obey in St. Joseph is the same price. Make the drive and save your animal the pain that they will endure if you bring them to rovers retreat. If I could leave zero stars I would. 1 star feels too good for this shameful place. read more

They were nice and very professional. However I felt like my larger dog didn't get the best bath. He still had some dirt on his belly and around his legs. But his face and coat seemed to be clean and he smelled nice, so I wasn't mad. My smaller dog was very clean. They definitely took their time with her. My only issue was the office smells like cat urine. It kinda made my eyes sting a little. But their pricing was good, they are great. read more

Oh my goodness. Thank you Rover's Retreat! I brought in my very big and very shaggy 7 month old doodle. She was completely transformed. I was a worried mama (both for them and for my puppy). I don't even want to give a star to this business- the owner Melanie is rude and could not care less about the customer. Our husky was brought in to have knots taken out and groomed and to just be pampered because she doesn't get groomed but maybe once a year (she's an outside dog and loves it- hates being inside). The discussion was she did not want her shaved but something needed to be done with her coat bc it was knotted in places and uneven so to cut or brush those out. Clearly there was a miscommunication because our Chloe came out almost bald. You are not suppose to do this to a husky- a "master groomer" of all people should know this. Called to complain and she told me she "discussed it with my sister but she didn't seem to care less what was done to the dog" which is completely untrue being my sister loves our dog and why would you do something like this against your better judgement. The business deal should have been tuned down or if her coat couldn't be brushed out and made to what my sister asked they should've called before doing this. Yelled at each other over the phone without her admitting to her mistake and wouldn't get a refund or any compensation. I would not recommended this business ever. read more
