On the first day, we hiked two miles in to a remote alpine lake and I caught my first Arctic Greyling (and then 10 more and a dozen or so Yellowstone Cutthroats). On the second day, we spent the morning honing my casting skills on the Firehole River, catching over a dozen fat Rainbows and Browns. After lunch we hit the Gibbon for what Buddy called "feature water" where I caught a couple Westslope Cutthroats and bunch of hungry Browns on dry flies. 50 fish, 5 species in 2 days. Ignore Google Maps when it warns you that part of the road here is unpaved for the last leg of the…read moredrive. It's actually recently paved, so you have a smooth ride to the parking lot! The path to the waterfall is also paved with asphalt so it's a smooth walk up and great for strollers. There are two vault toilets at the parking lot, and a small picnic area near the entrance of the parking lot. This is an amazing waterfall. Water cascades down a columnar basalt face so it's particularly stunning. I've seen amazing columnar basalt formations (Devils Tower, Devils Postpile), but none with a water element. It's very memorable. I saw some people trying to scramble up the rocks to get to the top of the waterfall, but I'm not sure how safe that is. From satellite photos it looks like there's just forest up there anyways.

All the way up is paved which makes the experience nicer and easier, if you're not looking to break a leg going up haha. The sunset up there are amazing and all pictures are Instagram worthy!!! I took my 70 year old grandma and she enjoyed the hike and even made it from start to finish. The ride there is a bit intense with many curves so I'd recommend to take a bag for those that may get car sick. I'll be coming back to Montana, just for this beauty!

Right in the heart of Bozeman, how cool!…read more I was up early on a Monday morning and wanted to take a little wander around before a longer morning hike. Decided to wander up here, and am happy I did. Granted, the clouds were pretty low this morning, so I'm not sure I got the full effect, but it was still neat. The only thing that was concerning is there was one off leash dog that was a little scary -- it made it so I couldn't do the loop around; it was snarling and offputting. Besides that: nice to see so many active people in the morning. When the weather is cooperative, this is a great little spot right in the heart of town. 2026: 45/2026

The area is very maintained and the vault toilets near the entrance were fairly clean (at least that's what my husband said). We hiked around the beginning of September so this is a bit overdue but the walk itself, the falls, and hearing the water flow through nature was incredible. It's a fairly easy trail if you have young children, we saw a few elderly folks walking through as well. When you're traveling through Montana's wilderness, always remember to respect the nature around you. Pack it in, pack it out. And don't forget your bear spray--it's grizzly country out here :)
