I wrote my initial review 3 years ago. Bread is still delicious. The donuts are top notch. The best is getting there before 7am and getting a warm donut, especially a jelly. If you go early the bread is sometimes too warm to slice. You can prepay and come back. Im serious, the rye is outstanding. Im sorry but this is not a 2.5 star bakery. Its probably a 3.5 bakery easily, maybe 3.99. I just bought two small, but large, loafs of rye for $6. Their donuts are fresh and delicious. The women who work there always are friendly to me. Please don't discount this bakery as an option. I wish I had taken a pic of the donuts and bread but they didnt survive long enough. Next time Im in Ill post some pictures. read more

Bakery has nice selection to offer. Got some polish cream cheese cookies then went to the deli next door it's called "Polska Chata" was happy I stopped in got a great lunch homemade and everything!! Parking is private so that's real cool. On my way to Amboy and got hungry. This place will not let you down. The place is run by polish women old school a la madre!! Love it the way the check you out and are surprised to see a Latino come in . I enjoy quality food, so when I come across it, have to keep integrity and be honest no matter what. I have gone in there a couple of times to purchase bread and babkas for holiday meals. The babkas were ok, but there is a lady who works in there who is just nasty and rude. I also had to tell her 2 or 3 times what type of cookies I wanted, even after pointing and almost having to shout the ones I wanted! I moved out of the area a few years ago, but Royal Bakery was always a bakery of choice for my family. When Daylight Bakery in South Amboy closed it became our first choice for cookies, doughnuts and breads. I have never tried their victory cake, but their kifels are the best. When I was a kid my relatives would make this delightful Eastern European cookie. I however am much too lazy to make them so whenever I am home I always stop to pick up a set. I really wish there was a 3.5. I enjoy coming to this bakery. I know a lot of the negative reviews involve the staff. The old lady that is there can be nasty. I don't think she realizes it. I just think she's an old polish lady that has that take it or leave it attitude. The young girl who works there however is incredibly helpful and nice. As for the food, it's not bad. Coworkers and I go in once in awhile and get a few donuts. They are great. Boston cream and a glazed apple filled are my usual. The donuts have gotten a little smaller and the cost did go up. I could not even cut the nut horseshoe danish it was so stale! My husband took it back & complained. They gave him an apple turnover on the house. I took it out of the bag & was disgusted! I love the Royal Bakery. I've never had a bad experience. My favorite - orange cruellers! My only issue is that they don't usually make enough of them, and when I get there on Sunday mornings, there aren't any left. SO - I try to remember to call the day before, place my order, and give a pick up time. Then on Sunday after church, I can pick it up. THIS REVIEW IS 100% ACCURATE AND I AM EXERCISING MY 1ST AMENDMENT RIGHT IN THE POSTING OF THIS INFORMATION: VICTORY CAKE?! MORE LIKE A DEFEAT. Much to my dismay, my family has been purchasing cakes from Royal Bakery for many years. One in particular, the "Victory Cake" has been at the center of every Griswald-esq family controversy at the dinner table - one which always leads to disappointed guests who leave with empty stomachs - or aching ones, for that matter, if they've been had the unfortunate luck of eating a forkful of this monstrosity of a dessert. So what is a Victory Cake, you ask? Well, apparently it is a cake that dates back to WW2...and upon tasting this cake, you would think that it's been standing in the Royal Bakery display case since WW2. The cake itself is round with an off-white, whipped cream type substance (for lack of a better description) covering the outside of the cake, with a 'V' scribbled on top for decoration. There are also chocolate cake crumbs thrown haphazardly across the outside of the cake for additional decoration because, well, some beautiful mind must have thought it would be more appealing to the eye. Then there are a few layers to the cake on the inside alternating the same off-white whipped cream substance and chocolate cake. The whipped cream tasted rancid and had a sour taste. That's the only way to accurately describe it. The cake just crumbled upon slicing through it. There is NO WAY that a freshly baked cake would crumble in the same manner. I'd venture to guess those chocolate cake crumbs on the outside of the cake are the scraps from the leftovers gathered from a weeks worth of work. The baker must throw them over his shoulder and hell, whatever sticks to the week old cake is less mess for him to clean up. I honestly wonder how this bakery is still in business. Maybe it's because the elderly folks in town who have been frequenting this place for years are creatures of habit and refuse to go anywhere else. Maybe it's because they've lost their sense of taste along with their hearing. Maybe it's because they are of the generation that emerged victorious from the WW2 conflict and they believe in this cake under matters of principle. Whatever the case, I implore every American: AVOID ROYAL BAKERY! read more

Service is awful. They are so slow.You cant get rye bread there on a Saturday morning at 11am unless you had preordered it. I know it's St.Patricks Day, but i don't understand why it has to be preordered. Luckily, the polish deli next door has fresh homemade rye bread that they sliced it for me right there. Food is good. Service is terrible. Family business, but these people have no idea how to run a business. 5 people working behind the counter and still clueless. There is one lady who is so slow... she was taking my order and another customer was having an issue with another worker about his order. Conversation got heated and she literally stopped what she was doing with my order to stare at the other worker and the other customer . I was literally like "hello? can you finish my order ?" There were at least 5 people behind me waiting.
