I have to give Scala Pastry five stars because they make my favorite New York style cheesecake ever. I am not exaggerating! The other cookies and desserts are great, and the prices are very reasonable, but the cheesecake is what will keep me coming back. It's creamy and rich, not too sweet, nor too heavy, and available as a full cake or miniature servings. For years and years, my aunt and uncle always got cheesecake from here when I visited. Unfortunately, the pandemic forced us apart longer than anyone would've liked. I kept saying 'I wish I knew where they got the cheesecake.' Finally, I asked for the name and visited when I was in town. Wow! More than five years later, and the cheesecake was just as good as I remember. I also picked up a struffoli and some assorted cookies. Next time I'll try a hamantaschen, too. And, of course, the cheesecake will always be my go-to dessert here. read more

I always come here for the holidays and or special occasions. The Italian cookies are very good. The rainbow cookies and the mini cannolis (filled fresh upon order) are my family's favorites. They get extremely crowded during the holidays but well worth the hour+ wait. The staff has always been attentive and helpful. The line goes pretty fast if you know what you want. First things first, this used to be my favorite bakery. Sadly, not anymore. It's small but filled to the brim with yummy lookin goodies in cases on all sides. From cookies to cakes, pastries, and breads, they also have gluten free,sugar free and vegan items. I had a purpose being in their to order a birthday cake for myself. I wanted a day off from baking, and it was a milestone birthday. I was greeted by a gentleman, apparently the owner who took my order and wrote it down. I also got a black n white cookie and a tiramisu mousse looking thing. I had a week before the day of pick up. The cookie was dry and wasn't good. The tiramusu was okay, not great. A week went by, and the time we discussed picking up the cake was 9 am. I hit a little traffic on the way there, so I got their a few minutes late. I spoke to the woman, and she said their was no cake for a pick-up today. I explained and showed her my receipt. The owner screwed up the dates for the pick-up even though I told him numerous times the date. She apologized profusely and said to give the baker 10 minutes to put the cake together. Okay. So I waited, even tho I was fuming on the inside. I got my cake and left. Was really looking forward to the cake. Unfortunately, it was horrible. The chocolate cake was so dry that there was also an overwhelming amount of whipped cream to the point that it had to be scraped off, and their was more whipped cream than cake. The fruit that was supposed to be in it was scarcely their. The price I was charged for this bakery cake was not worth the final result. Also, I was told that the owner has a habit of mistaking the dates on orders,so buyers beware. I probably would've had a better cake if I went to a grocery store. They've lost a customer. There were only apologies, no discount or refund. Next time, I'll bake it myself or go somewhere else. Now I'm stuck with a cake that's not good. Ick. read more

What a terrible experience today with this older lady who had no idea how to use the POS system. Because of her lack of training she decided to insult me in front of customers that my card had issues when the fact of the matter is that she doesn't know how to use the Credit card system. I had my son with me and she takes the cupcakes she packed up like we were some low life. Another customer walked out with me stating he doesn't want to deal with the same problem. A bit disappointed. Walked in about 10 minutes before closing time (8pm). I was hoping to try out a cookie but the young woman behind the register said they're closed while tending to their last customer. Maybe better to adjust closing time to 7:45PM if that's the case. I'll try and go back again but just a bit disappointing of how abrupt the interaction I had. Totally understand wanting to close up but would have been a more positive customer experience if the person engaged to ask what it was I was looking for or to say they were wrapping up earlier for the night. Most bakeries are similar so the difference sometimes comes to customer service. Scala's quality is always excellent, and when it comes to customer relations, Paul, the owner shines. I had ordered a regular mocha cake for my wife's birthday (her favorite), and wanted the top covered with pink roses. Paul did a beautiful job and wrote her name with a "Happy Birthday". But knowing my wife I asked Paul to cover the writing up with more flowers. Im sure that he must have thought it was nuts, but he did it and it came out beautiful, just like my wife wanted it. So, thank you Paul! You outdid yourself as usual. That's how a true neighborhood business should be. read more

Watchout for their sly staff. Tried fooling me a second time and hence the review. I went to the store earlier today to buy some biscuits. Now, the girl at the counter opened up a box and started weighing the biscuits. She looked at me and said "it is slightly over the weight, do you mind?" STOP, REWIND.. I was here a week ago and at that time it was a different a girl at the counter. She also weighed what I wanted to buy and then told me it was slightly over then what I had asked her. She asked me with a big bright smile "it is slightly over the weight, do you mind" and I said "Thats alright". I reach home to find out that the "slightly over" was in fact almost half a pound extra and I ended up paying close to $8 more. So coming back to today I looked at the weighing scale and instead of the half a pound I had asked for she had actually an extra quarter pound which means another $5 for the store. I understand that all these items cannot be exactly weights but there is no way quarter pound got added. I told her I only need half a pound. This obviously upset her because that tactic did not work, so she removed all the biscuits from the box which she had began packing, then took a brown paper bag and dumped all the biscuits in it. Then she handed it over to me. So now I have a brown paper bag instead of the box which she had initially planned on just because I said no to the extra weight Overall, I would not recommend this bakery to anyone. Their truck was parked outside my building last night, so naturally I had to sample almost everything they had!! I love bakeries. I'm Italian, born and raised in a New York town full of second generation Italians. I ordered the black and white cookie, the icing was perfect but it was a little too cakey for me. The rainbow sprinkle cookie which was absolutely perfect. I also ordered a lobster claw. The filling was delicious but the pastry tasted a little stale. We also got a cannoli roll, I tested the filling and it's fantastic, but haven't had it yet. And my boyfriend got the death by chocolate cake which he ate in 2 bites. I don't even think he chewed it. He said it was great, wish I got to try it, but oh well! There are so many other things I want to try! Over all they're good. I just think we got end of the day leftovers. I have ordered twice now via Uber Eats. The first time I was looking for some sweets. I saw they had food as well. I had the apple turnover, prune hamentashen. Fresh and tasty. I also tried the lentil soup - a perfect blend of seasonings. I asked for the veggie pie. They called me immediately, told they were out, and offered equal value veg empanadas. They were fresh with a good assortment of veggies. Today I ordered the lentil and chicken soups. Exceptional. I re-ordered the apple turnover and apricot hamentashen. Having lived of walking distance from Little Italy in NYC for many years and two years in Brooklyn, I have had some of the very best Italian cookies and pastries. Since moving here to Central Jersey, I was happy to find a local family owned Italian bakery close to home. Being a huge tea drinker, my son and I love to have something slightly sweet after dinner. I have been coming to Scala Bakery for the last 16 years. I come mostly for their amazing assortment of biscotti. I usually buy a pounds worth and keep them in my cookie jar at home which will last for awhile. Because biscotti are twice-baked cookies, it can last 2 weeks. Dunk them into your tea or coffee and eat them slightly soggy. My fave are the ones with nuts in them. Mmmm...so good and a perfect way to end a meal or have during an afternoon tea. Pistachio is my absolute favorite and I always ask them to put more of this flavor in the mix. The other flavors are chocolate, cinnamon and cherry. One other item I have to mention are their Italian Rainbow cookies. I could probably keep eating these and don't when to stop, I mean they are kind of small, right? Here at Scala Bakery, they also sell it by the slice in cake form. Now I can't help but get a slice or two every time I drop by. It's like eating a huge Italian Rainbow cookie. I lick the spoon clean with every bite. All their Italian cookies are incredibly fresh and the selection is huge. I have never really tried their other pastries and cakes so I can't comment on that. We ordered a cake for our sons 14th birthday 7 days in advance, paid in advance as well. Upon pickup cake wasn't even made. I was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I came back 15 minutes later, it was sitting on the counter boxed up and taped so I couldnt even see it. When i opened the box the cake wasn't even decorated. No flowers or decorative trim, just "Happy Birthday ****" at that point I just grabbed the cake and left. The lady with the ball-cap (owners wife) is a very miserable person. NO TO SCALA- HORRIBLE CAKE, HORRIBLE SERVICE! If you ever to spoil, no... RUIN a special occasion, order a cake from here. First off, Nikki the owner/baker is one of the rudest I have come across. She was thoroughly unprofessional and downright condescending. All of which could be swallowed if the cake was any good. It had a mediocre bread, horribly done hard icing, as if it was made the night before. MOST EMBARRASSING was that blue color of the icing stained our guests' lips and hands (see pic) and couldn't be washed away after repeated attempts. I am surprised this bakery has survived this long with such a shoddy service and SUCH a shocking end-product. read more
