Although it was warm outside, the ice cream served to my friends and I was already partially melted when served, which indicates to me the freezers are not handling the doors opening often very well. Ice cream should be served still hard, without any liquid already pooling at the bottom. The ice cream itself was good but nothing extraordinary. Portion sizes were normal , though pricey compared to other local areas that offer heaping portions for similar prices. $8 for a small scoop in a bowl with 2 toppings is a bit steep in my opinion. They are also cash (or Venmo) only. Parking was easy on the street. There were seating options both inside in the AC and outside , it is a nice area along the main strip of Wethersfield. Good if you're in the area but probably not something I would drive out of the way for.

For me, the last time i saw a real emu was yesterday. The emu's name was Frosty, and he/she(?) happens to be a resident of Robb's Farm Ice Cream in Glastonbury. We also saw a donkey and half a dozen goats in fenced in fields, so Robbs sure gives you some value added to their sensational ice cream. Robbs has many of the traditional flavors, but some cryptic flavors that will send you scurrying to their posted cheat sheets to decipher the ingredients. Some of yesterday's flavors were Cow Pies, Dirty Barn Shoes, Donkey Tails, Llama Delight, Purple Calf, Tractor Grease, and Udderly Ridiculous, Not only is their ice cream terrific, but its reasonably priced. A 2-scoop cup is just $4 with tax included. I couldn't resist some of their crazily named flavors, so my two scoops were Purple Calf (black raspberry with cookie dough and chocolate chips) and Tractor Grease (chocolate with fudge and chocolate chip cookie dough). Robbs has quite a few picnic benches under a pavillion, so we grabbed a seat and enjoyed our ice cream on a beautiful summer day in the country. Truth be told, we loved Robbs a lot. There were about half a dozen benches and tables in the alley, and a like number on the sidewalk on Broad Street. They had fifteen ice cream flavors available, plus two sorbets, two vegan flavors, and a Banana Sugar Free choice. Floats, shakes, coffee blends, sundaes, a cookie sandwich, and a waffle concoction round out their product line. We each had a waffle cone - Butter Crunch (almond candy and butterscotch ice cream) and Caramel Pretzel (Vanilla ice cream with caramel ribbons and sweet and salty chocolate covered pretzel bits). The Caramel Pretzel was mine and it was really good, with a smooth and creamy vanilla base and plenty of those yummy chocolate pretzel bits and pieces. Their ice cream is homemade by the good folks at the Gran-Val Scoop in Granville, MA. Our single scoops on a sugar cone were $5 each.

The ice cream freezer had years of ice and grime built up on the inside. It was half empty and the flavors remaining were fairly mundane. We tried the most interesting looking one - a milk and cereal creation. It tasted like warm vanilla ice cream with hints of crushed up salty, stale cracker. There are lot of other places in town that offer fun desserts, so we'll go other places next time.

I opened Yelp and found this place. I chose the "Mango Girl," which is listed as having fresh mango. The friendly attendant took a cup of premixed cream, sugar, and whatever else goes into ice cream and some mango and poured it out on what looked like a pizza pan. I wasn't sure what she was up to, but watched in wonder as she went at this mixture with a couple metal spatulas, chopping, mixing, and chopping again (hence the "stir fried ice cream" claim) as the liquid began to freeze. It turns out that the "pizza pan" was wicked cold. She flattened and smoothed out the mixture just before it hardened, and then, scraped it off the pan in neat little rolls, and put about 6 or 7 little rolls in a paper bowl. We then moved to the toppings station where I was told to choose "up to 4" toppings... stuff like white chocolate chips, rice crispy bar, and some Japanese cookies and candies. All in: $8.00 including tax. Very intriguing. Unique for me, but here's the deal: the ice cream just wasn't very good. It was overly sweet and had no distinct flavor. I don't know if it was supposed to be vanilla with mango in it, mango with mango in it, or maybe sweet cream and mango. It was just sweet. Too sweet. No flavor. And, wicked cold. Which is good in concept, but not so good for eating ice cream. It was hard. It crumbled into dry bits when I tried to take a spoonful. So, I was left with not-so-great ice cream that was difficult to eat. As it warmed, it was not-so-good ice cream that was less difficult to eat. I give Icy Rolls a star for the ice cream, a star for the idea and presentation, and a star for being open at 2pm on Sunday.
