My first Royal Oak Chiropractic Clinic appointment with Dr. Manela today. He said he's honest, hmm. It's always a red flag when someone toots their own horn. He said he thought it could be either the Median or ulnar nerves that's not getting the signal to my brain. He said he may have to decompress the 5th and 6th vertebra to create space for the nerve to not be pinched or agitated. He said this is what's could be causing me the numbness and tingling and pain in my neck when I try to bend my neck back for full range of motion. He said I have some Disc Degeneration and it can get worse and turn into arthritis later. Not good to hear that arthritis could be in my future. The office was a bit old and run-down but generally clean, it's an old building for sure. I am fine if a doctor's office is simple as long as their clinical coats are reduced as a result, not sure since I was under the impression my first visit would be under $100 and ended up being $173+ and especially when I had no work done on me. The exam seemed rather high to me. He does have a digital x-ray despite the antiquity of the building. On my second visit Dr. Manela did the laser treatment and then the manual and machined treatment afterwards. He told me it could take me weeks to months or longer for my numbness to go away and I thought what a scam this all was for me. I may never feel better and he would keep me coming back for more useless laser and adjustments for the rest of my life, the very thing I was afraid of and made me skeptical about coming in the first place. I would maybe come for one more session and let some time go by and see if it has any impact, after nothing I don't think he can convince me to come more since the lack of efficacy will be clear after a week or two. My third visit was on a Saturday and I saw this big shaggy dog lying in the main area of the office just chilling out. I was the last patient and was shuffled off into a room. The doctor did the laser treatment and then a manual adjustment again after asking how I felt. I felt exactly the same as my first and second visit and told him flatly. After we this second treatment he suggested I come in 3 times the next week to build on the my first two treatments, that he felt he could help me over the next week and if no improvement he would not be able to help me in the end then. He said long term he would advise 3 times over the next 3 weeks, but at least to give him another week. My third therapy, I asked for a copy of my X-rays, they would have them ready for me on my next visit on Friday. Smells like dog in the clinic since the big hairy dog is sleeping content in the main clinic area. The doctor could maybe sense my disappointment or skepticism after my last therapy, he offered me an apple as I cashed out. He seems like a decent enough doctor but sadly I can't say the therapy helped me at all so far. I left the 3rd therapy and my 4th appointment in total the same way I had come in. He suggested I come at 3 more times at least to make sure to give him a chance to help me, this is after 3 treatments with no sight of improvement at all too by the way. I am now almost $400 out of pocket and have nothing to show for it and he wants me to shell out for another $300 or so more to make sure I give him a fair chance, seriously? Please don't patronize your patients because they don't have a MD. I had my husband pick up my x-rays from the office for me while I was at work on what was to be my 4th treatment and I had him cancel my 4th therapy and 5th paid appointment since I felt all of the therapies were all for naught thus far. My husband said the doctor seemed to be a foul mood and gruffly said hello and then was even more rude when he told my husband that it I wasn't coming to my appointment today that I had to cancel by 3, he said I wasn't coming and left soon afterwards as he felt unwelcomed and completely uncomfortable with the mood of the doctor. I guess he was upset I wasn't going to allow for him to bilk me out of more money for wasteful treatment. He seemed decent enough during my appointments but money prospects can make a mean person feign kindness, I guess. Dr. Manela did not make me put faith in chiropractic medicine and when continued the lack of credibility of the medicine in fact in my mind. I thought I had put this nightmare of an experience and encounter behind me, of course not. This doctor after paying all of my bills after each visit had the audacity to send me a bill for some BS residual balance and for my pointless and wasteful visits and consults. It wasn't enough to take nearly $400 from me but he has the gall to demand more from me. read more

TLDR: If you want an empathetic, knowledgeable chiropractor, especially if you have never previously had chiropractic work, I cannot recommend Dr. Howard Manela enough. His reviews are real. After being a patient for many years, I can tell you that his cliental includes a LOT of millennials and its because of the reviews! (For sure, Royal Oak is also a young area.) People who do their research look for doctors with these kinds of reviews, then turn around and leave their own to further boost such a great doctor. I am in this camp. Five years ago, I was in a major car accident where my vehicle was shoved into the barrier wall on I-696, crushing the roof of my vehicle into my head. In the early days afterwards, I was in a shock. I was in pain, but wanted to believe I would be alright. As swelling increased, the pain grew agonizing. I had migraines, neck pain, back pain, etc. I had been to the ER multiple times and was calling every neurologist and other specialist in Metro Detroit trying to find someone who could get me in in under several months. As I was awaiting an appointment with a specialist MD, I decided to try chiropractic out of desperation. I did not previously have a positive view of chiropractic and so I was highly skeptical and honestly a bit afraid of someone manipulating my neck, especially at a time when it was already in insane amounts of pain. Even after all these years, I remember my first appointment. Dr. Manela was instantly approachable. He spent so much time listening to me and then thoroughly examining my injuries and records. He was beyond empathetic and, at a time I was beginning to think I was crazy, he was showing me on my x-rays areas where he was not surprised I would be in so much pain. He explained exactly what he was doing before he did anything and I am dead serious when I say I felt noticeable relief even in the very first adjustment. Of course, I was in bad shape so it wasn't like he healed me. There was no way. But at that point even slight temporary relief was a blessing. I ended up going to Dr. Manela 3x a week for many weeks and working my way down over the years as I improved, just like he said I would (you don't heal over night). He became like family. I honestly feel like I know his family, his hiking adventures, his dog, his life. He has such comical bedside manner with his patients and talks away, keeping patients at ease during adjustments. In fact, I recently moved to California and one of the largest downsides was no longer seeing Dr. Manela, not only for his art/science of chiropractic but he became a good friend (and I'm his son's age!). A special shout-out to Dr. Manela, and team, for also dealing with my auto insurance. The Michigan insurance system is a mess and its no surprise many doctors refuse to work with auto insurance. Dr. Manela is a stand-up guy and just wants to help people. Even if it comes with logistical challenges, many where I bet he often doesn't get paid. Dr. Manela quite literally changed my life. He reduced agonizing pain at a time when Physical Therapists, Neurologists, etc. were helping, but not with the same instantaneous results as him. I still recommend a wholistic approach (keep seeing your MD, your PT, etc.), but include chiropractic and specifically Dr. Manela in your treatment plan! read more

Edit: Dr Julie is not someone I would ever see again. She was quick and dismissive of my issues and quickly went to the "standard adjustment". Which is not something you want to hear in your spine adjustment. I really thjnk she will hurt someone by doing this. Not only was the standard adjustment wrong for me, but when one side of my neck and back didn't crack, she just moved on and the whole service was less than 45 seconds. She did end up hurting both my neck and back over the last week since my adjustment more than any other adjustment I have ever had. Congratulations to Dr. Manela and his new office location. I hope the money he's taken from me was put to good use in fitting out the new office. With regard to being a chiropractor, Dr. Manela does a fine job. My neck/back feel as good as they have after visiting any of the other local chiropractors. As far as running an honest business, he does not. I went to see Dr Manela for an adjustment and was promised that I would not be billed for certain parts of the examination. A few weeks later, I discovered that he had, in fact, billed my insurance. Since the insurance did not cover the procedures, Royal Oak Chiropractic Clinic was sent a check for the balance directly from my HSA. After calling ROCC, they at first denied that they had been sent the extra money. With some further prodding, they admitted the receipt of double payment and promised to mail a refund check. It's been over a year now, I've contacted them multiple times over the phone, in person, and by the Better Business Bureau. Each time, they rush to end the conversation, promise a refund, but never deliver. If you end up at ROCC, expect perfectly average treatment, but be careful with your billing, and never let your insurance auto-pay providers on your behalf. read more

I had my first appointment. When I filled out my paperwork I gave all insurance information and was never informed that they do not cover my insurance. Ended up paying about $135 out of pocket. Which was a discounted rate. But regardless could have been avoided had I known my insurance did not cover this. Dr. Manila was nice. But assistant wasn't very friendly or welcoming. Office didn't seem very organized. My biggest complaint is that I was not informed my insurance wasn't taken. And after going somewhere that took my insurance I don't think I needed more than one adjustment and was advised to come back for further adjustments. read more

Obviously Dr. Manela helped by adjusting my body but I was more impressed with the time he spent with me on what I could do to help prevent future problems. I am very impressed with Dr. Manela with his knowledge and having a genuine care about your experience at the clinic. The staff is friendly and the care is wonderful as he would let his staff take the time to apply heat and vibration massage to prepare for the adjustment. My treatment would include the use of a laser and the occasional use of a vibrating traction table, which was so comfortable and relaxing, I would almost fall asleep while using it! I had a great experience and would definitely recommend Royal Oak Chiropractic for all of your chiropractic needs. UPDATE: The vibrating traction table is no longer available and has been replaced by a pair of massage chairs that are wonderful in providing a relaxing experience before any adjustments are done. If you're looking for a chiropractor that actually cares and is willing to spend the time it takes to really help you feel better you need to go see Dr. Manela. My husband and I started to go to him about 15 years ago when we lived 2 miles away. Then we moved about 20 miles away so we stopped going for a few years which I went to see two other chiros closer to my house during this time. One of them got me for hundreds of dollars on vitamins he convinced me I needed and his adjustments were a joke. The second one adjusted everybody he saw (hundreds of patients a week) the exact same way and spent about 3 mins doing it. Neither of these guys were helping my pain whatsoever. I eventually ended up having three spinal surgeries that were all successful but my neck that was fused at C5-7 was still causing severe pain down my arm. I had not seen a chiro since I had my surgeries but I knew Dr. Manela was a good chiro so I figured it couldn't hurt. My first appt back, he spent about an hour examining, going over my X-Rays with me and determining a treatment plan that included light adjustments with a tool and laser treatments. It took about 3-4 weeks 2-3 times / week and my pain was almost completely gone. The laser really helped. Now I only go occasionally when I need an adjustment or am having pain and it always helps. He really cares and takes the time to address each patients individual problems. The girls that work in his office are great and on top of being a gifted chiro, he's a good guy. I've referred several people to him and I would recommend him to anyone I know. read more

I went to see Dr. Manela for a frozen shoulder. He used laser therapy to help with the pain. After just a few visits I could not believe the pain relief that the laser provided. Prior to seeing Dr. Manela I saw a Dr. who had suggested I get a (painful) procedure done to cure my frozen shoulder. After going to Dr. Manela for a couple of months I have almost complete range of motion. The Dr. recently acquired a new laser that is phenomenal! Results the next day! I met Dr. Manela about 2 months ago. I was in an extreme amount of pain - I couldn't walk, sit, sleep, stand, lay - it was awful. Within the first visit he was certain that I had a ruptured disc and was very thorough with his explanation of what was going on and how he was going to treat me. To be as thorough as possible, I also had a an MRI - and Dr. Manela was spot on - it was exactly as he said it was! We began a regular program of adjustments and decompression therapy. He continued to encourage me and let me know when I should expect to feel some relief, and true to his word - I did. I really was surprised because I had been in so much pain I didn't think simple adjustments and time on the table would help. I was so relieved to avoid surgery when that had been the next step. Dr. Manela is very skilled in his practice and incredibly thorough and patient. He's always willing to take time to explain what is happening in my back. The biggest win I've had from my visits with him, is that my migraines have unexpectedly decreased. I didn't know that they could be related to adjustments, however Dr. Manela noticed that by adjusting some vertebrae in my neck, we'd be able to alleviate my migraines. After making several phone attempts to office to verify insurance coverage we finally got a call to say just come in for your appointment and we'll verify insurance during our Free consultation! Upon arrival we were never greeted and sat in the office waiting to be addressed! We made appointment to see if my daughter could get relief from her migraines! The initial consultation was very repetitive and confusing! During this time the Dr admitted to not accepting my insurance for quite sometime! ( Why were we not told this PRIOR to visit) He then proceeded to take her into a "exam room" in which he insisted on an X-ray to further consider her care plan! Nothing was ever address and he insisted on her returning the next day for treatment session which would be $45 after our initial $95 fee for the previous day! I would not recommend a Dr office that is misleading and not upfront with their patients! Why would anyone pay for care that isn't counted towards a deductible?? Happy to say that we found a new doctor ( Dr Sarah) that was very understanding and willing to address our concerns and accepts our insurance!! Side note... I also received a very rude call after canceling our next day appointment insisting that she needed to be seen immediately and not put if off any longer! My husband and I have been seeing Dr. Manela for quite a few months now. My husband has always been skeptical about Chiropractic Health his entire life. I have not. I've always believed in them and trust that our bodies can heal itself without harmful scripts that cause additional side effects. I'm a newbie when it comes to chiropractic care, so Dr. Manelo is the first chiropractor I've seen for my low back/leg pain. I am wondering what took me so long! After spending some time talking with me about my symptoms and history, and reviewing some x-rays, he diagnosed sciatica. Dr. Manelo used a variety of treatments, including laser, massage and spinal adjustments. After just a couple of weeks, my pain is almost completely gone. I should mention that I had been suffering with the condition on and off for over six months, with little to no break in between "flare-ups".
