I came for apple picking with the fam. There were a lot of different apples to choose from. The bag is quite small for the price but the experience was fun. We checked out the restaurant after and there weren't any GF options. I did get the orange cream soda and it was delicious. The bakery indicated the taffy apples were GF so I grabbed one and it was really good. They also mentioned they have GF donuts but were sold out. I wish they had more in stock to try. Visited for early picking yesterday. It was a beautiful day and as always the farm is gorgeous ! Started with lunch and Hannah was an amazing young lady. She was so kind and a lot of fun. Lunch was good and they caramel apple ice cream - oh my! The ladies at the apple barn were so nice and showed us how to pick the best apples. Royal Oak has become an annual tradition for my family. Every year we come here for apple picking and for their amazing food. They have apple picking between September and October, with different apples available at different weeks during the month. This most recent weekend was the perfect time to go. While it was still quite hot outside and not the typical fall weather, the apple varieties available were just right. We were able to pick Honeycrisp, Gala, Fuji, McIntosh, Cortland, and Blondee apples. There are so many apple trees to pick from, though make sure you stick to the ones with the yellow flags. It's only $12 to get admitted into the apple orchard and you get a complimentary 1/4 peck bag to fill. You can pay extra if you would like a bigger bag. Those bags do stretch so I was probably able to fill my bag with 10-12 apples. Once you're done at the apple orchard, be sure to check out their wide variety of pumpkins, their country kitchen, and their store. From the country kitchen, I highly recommend getting one of their chicken pot pies. They are some of the best pot pies I have had. They also sell fresh apple cider donuts and slices of pie if you're looking for a sweet treat! Their store is a lot of fun as well, with lots of trinkets as well as food options. Here you can pick up fresh fudge, breads, donuts, pies, caramel apples, cider, and frozen pies. This is really the perfect place to go with your family to satisfy your fall cravings! read more

My friends and I came for lunch, we picked apples, checked out the animals and had an all around wonderful day. Everyone at the restaurant and near the apple Orchard were beyond super friendly Everything is so homey and sweet. It's a wonderful place to come back to over and over again We ordered chicken tenders, fries, pot pie, and an apple pie and a blueberry pie The chicken tenders were delicious so were the fries heard good things about the pot pie. This is such a cute farm! This was my first time here with my family and the kids loved it! This is a big farm. Would recommend strollers if you are picking apples. Could be a long walk depending on where apples are available to pick when you visit. Unlike some other farms, they have a free playground and petting zoo for kids. They also have tours and hayrides that operate on weekends only. Don't forget to stop by their gift shop/ bakery/ country kitchen to try some of their desserts / meals! Highly recommend their $5 apple cider slushee!!! The restaurant does close at 2PM on weekdays and runs till 5PM on weekends. The staff at Royal Oak Farm are very nice and friendly. I would definitely come back again next year for Apple Picking. This is our new go-to place. A nice and small/manageable farm where you can shop or pick your own apples and see/feed a few animals as well. The charges to pick are reasonable and the items in the store itself are numerous. No rides or other money-grabs, but you can take some photos on a hale bale where there is a "frame" with the farm name or in the lovely orchards. Staff is super friendly and it is just a peaceful experience as compared to some of the more "popular" places. read more

This is place was amazing!!! My girlfriend knows how much I love fall so she was a doll and took my bf and I here so I could express all my love and squee for everything fall. We were there pretty early but it was still jam packed! However, it was all good, the walk to get to the farm wasn't bad at all. At least the weather was cooler and cooperating so no hate here! Anyways, the place is HUGE!!! There is a barn, a restaurant, orchards filled with apples as far as the eye can see and a gift shop. Naturally as someone who self describes herself as allergic to money, we went to the gift shop first. The gift shop was combined with the bakery so the smells when we first entered was unbelievable. It smelled so yummy filled with apple cider and spices! Yum yum yum! My gf and I got some goodies including the most delicious apple cider donuts ever created!!! Right after that, we went to go pick some apples! One of the unique things I liked is that you can either pick apples from various brands in the orchards or you can also pick a big of pre picked apples. Of course, nothing is fresher than picking them from the tree! There is a small fee to go pick depending on how big of a bag you get. The orchards were well taken cared of and as vast as the eye can see! We got to taste and pick so many apples. I don't remember all the brands but from what I remember, I got some Delicious Red, Empire, Liberty and Snow Sweet that I was munching on. Overall, if you love fall and love apple picking, come here! First time trying out this orchard this year and I loved it. It's not overwhelmingly huge and I appreciate that. The prices are lower then other bigger orchards. You don't have to board a wagon to get to the orchard, you can actually walk over and do some apple picking!! The apples were so fresh and so big. My favorite was the candy crisp. They have an apple maze that is challenging and even has a riddle involved that includes free donuts!! This place has a religious/ cracker barelly southern vibe to it. It definitely got busier as the day went on so if you want a less crowded experience definitely come when they first open. The chicken pot pie was so yummy and their fresh hot donuts just melt in your mouth. What better way to ring in the fall season than with a day of apple picking? Apparently, we're not the only ones with an apple itch which is why Royal Oak's turned out to be the perfect choice. They were the only orchard that didn't require pre-purchased tickets in advance for weekend entry. All other orchards I checked were sold out so this was a huge apple saver. Plus - this was everything we were looking for. It was a busy weekend and lines were everywhere, but the U-Pick check-in line wasn't half as bad as it looked and went by quickly. Prices are very FAIR compared to other orchards. $13 includes your entry fee AND 1/4 (3 lb) peck per person. The only drag was the weekend we were here, we weren't allowed to purchase additional bags due to selling out. I would've grabbed more apples but that day was limited. This isn't their regular policy, they were just swamped with customers. One thing that led me here was the incredible selection. They had at least 8 varieties to choose from including prebagged in their market. Definitely check their website first to see which apples are ready for picking especially if you have a favorite..they have a total of 30 apple varieties! Even on a busy beautiful day there was plenty of room to roam and make your way to each section. The orchard was so clean and enormous (160 total acres of farmland) and social distancing was never an issue. They do require masks at entry. People seemed respectful of others. Trees are numbered and labeled so you can easily locate them on the provided map. Sunflowers were gorgeous. Porta potties are randomly located throughout.. We didn't check out the bakery or cider house :( but I found some great finds in the smaller market; Apple Butter bbq sauce, house made honey mustard, spiced teas, jams, cider & more goodies and some adorable gifts. You HAVE to get their frozen apple cider slushee. I'm not even a slushee girl, but this was the best cider I've ever tasted. Made with their honey crisp apples and wow...incredible flavor. They also make their own sparkling cider (I could kick myself for not going into the cider house) and if it tastes anything like their slushee, I'm going back. Some activities (petting zoo) are closed or only running on weekends due to Covid but there's still so many fun things to do for kids & adults alike; Apple Maze, pumpkin patch, playground and let's not forget shopping. What a stellar afternoon at a stellar apple picking orchard! As us suburbanites have learned, trying to get your fall fix on by apple picking in hopes for some serenity, a few smiles on your kid's faces, and some apple cider donuts, usually leads to a little chaos and LOTS of inflated prices. You likely end up elbow-to-elbow with crying kids, people taking selfies, and wasps. Further, such establishments know you'll do anything to stop your child from tugging on your pant leg for a donut or pumpkin so they'll charge you an arm and a leg. THIS place, though it can crowd up a little, has managed to preserve a genuine, wholesome, nostalgic atmosphere and experience without becoming gimmicky. It isn't as expensive as the other orchards. As a matter of fact, your U-pick entry fee which includes your bag is half the price of All Seasons! Upon entering, as one walks toward the apple picking gate, one is intercepted by a waft of fried dough aroma. You have to focus and say to yourself, " I am here for the apple picking". The wait for apple cider donuts is 10 times longer than the entry line for picking. Thats a bit of a downer..but you WILL end up in that line regardless I just know it. They have an excellent array of perfectly ripe apples. Guess what, they do not have an upcharge for honeycrisps! This season, most apples were a little smaller but super juicy and fragrant. You cannot compare these apples with the ones at the grocery store. The apples were overabundant. I lost count of how many times I said "this is the perfect apple". Each breed of apple has a description and it's best use (baking, applesauce, etc). Since this pandemic, we haven't had many outings without feeling a little on edge if we see lots of people. We actually went to two other orchards and struck out. One didn't have apple picking ready yet and the other had far too many people and, understandably, no parking. Covid is a contributor to line wait as they cannot have a crowded store. My wait for the country store was about 35 minutes. WORTH IT! I confess that I'm okay with death by apple cider donuts. These donuts are exceptional! Ours were fresh out of the fryer. They're so light and airy that you surely eat more than one. They currently are limiting households to 1 dozen fyi. As always, my wife had to pull me out of the store because I went in with donuts in mind, left with apple cobblestone bread, a few apple butters, apple cider, honeycrisp sparkling apple cider, and then apple cider donuts. This trip was much needed. Other than the overfilled, unattended outhouses with poopoo mountains, the entire farm is very well-kept and beautiful. The orchard itself is excellent. Over the years, my family would always go for picking and doughnuts just across the IL-WI border, but those orchards have since closed. We were looking at other places to try and gave Royal Oak a go. What a pleasant surprise! The grounds here are nice, staff are very helpful, and the gift shop/store is out of this world. In addition to picking some tasty apples, I purchase cider doughnuts (INCREDIBLE!!! though not piping hot, alas), a phenomenal apple salsa, blueberry syrup, cherry habanero jam, and apple BBQ sauce (I'd pass on the BBQ sauce). It looks like they offered way more in terms of activities prior to COVID (petting zoo, tractor rides, merry-go-round, etc.), but maybe some of that will come back. I had so much fun at Royal Oak Farm Orchard. How have I not been to this place before? Royal Oak Farm Orchard is worth a trip if you're looking for a unique day out. The weekend before my friends and I went, a staff member said they had had over 5,000 people, so admittedly, the orchards were a bit picked over. However, that didn't make it less fun. There's acre's of orchard so on a weekday, you can easily go and not bump into anyone else. Parking is a bit limited as you get to midday, so get there early! I arrived when they opened and while waiting for my friends, the main lot filled up quite a bit. Scared of bees? The bees were at their worst in the parking lot and near the tables outside the dining area. In the actual orchard, they were all too preoccupied with the fallen apples. So, my best advice is to be careful where you step, so you don't step on an apple that is being enjoyed by some of the pesky (but super useful) creatures. I'd also advise wearing long pants, just in case you do forget to watch where you're walking. I decided to order their pulled pork sandwich in their dining area. While good, it was very messy. I would probably go for something else next time, like their chicken fingers. Seating is currently outdoor only, so you'll have to contend with some bees. Their frozen apple cider was super tasty- it felt like drinking apple sauce. Before you head home, check out their store! It was rather cold today and would suggest wearing short and warm boots since it's muddy at times. You can get away with gyms shoes if the weather has rained the past few days. Be ready to spend some money on the tickets as this is where they make the money for the season. Plan to spend about $20 person and kids about $15. Kids rides will cost you a bit more. This was a pretty nice orchard. I came here opening weekend two weeks ago. I was a tad surprised at how packed it was considering the pandemic but the pick-your-own line still moved at a decent pace. Great quality apples, including honeycrisp and at a very reasonable price. I liked the shop as well. Nice assortment of jams to choose from. We bought a dozen of apples (of course), apples cobbler bread and a gallon of apple cider. Both the cider and bread were good as expected. The donuts were AMAZING. Very soft, moist and nicely sweet, even for days after we got them. Good orchard, I will return. read more

What a day to wander through the orchard! It wasn't too warm and a nice breeze was blowing. We went around 2pm on a Thursday and nearly had the place to ourselves. A great experience to do at least once in your life even if you don't like apples. They offer a restaurant, gift shop, and plenty of apple picking. It is a little pricey, at $12 per person you pick roughly 2 1/2 to 3 lbs of apple s but it's the experience that counts. Especially for little ones. The farm is beautiful but the 5 of us came to pick a specific apple. We left disappointed and went to the orchard we've gone to the past several years. UPD/ We were at the orchard @ 11 am when you opened. I checked the website before we headed out. If you sold out Saturday, as I think you did, the website should have been updated. We stopped here on a whim and were glad we did. Lovely farm with apples, pumpkins, and all the fall things. I loved the little shop and the apple cider donuts are a must try. We walked around and I ended up going home with a few pumpkins and apples. They also have a selection of apple butters, pumpkin butters, jams and applesauces. I did not try the restaurant, but when it opened at 11am, a rush of people came through the doors so something about it must be good. I can't believe I've never reviewed Royal Oak, or that there are so few reviews. So that others may know the awesomeness of this apple orchard, I will absolutely tell you more. :) We try to get here at least once a season, sometimes more, for the apple picking season. Typically, you get the best haul mid September to mid October, but this naturally varies depending on the year's harvest. Otherwise, it can literally be slim pickens, or I guess just a little more time consuming trying to get the higher apples when trees have been picked over. We've been going for about five years, but I know people for whom this is a tradition every year since childhood. How fun! And no matter the lateness of the season, we've always left with a good bag of apples. We've also had varying degrees of success with raspberries, and pumpkins are always plentiful. In addition to the "U-Pick", there's a farmers market with pre-picked items) and a country store with a variety of items from fresh gourds, to summer sausage and cheese, to salsas, and of course apple cider, apple cider donuts (YOU MUST!), and apple butter. If you're looking for country kitsch in your home decor, you will find an abundance here at the country store. There's also a country restaurant that we hear yummy things about (homestyle cooking like biscuits and gravy and more), but I have yet to actually eat there. However, there is more to do at Royal Oak than eat and shop. ;) They have many fun activities for children, and in fact offer up school and group field trips/tours. There is a playground, petting zoo, a carousel, a miniature train, a teepee, tractor rides and hayrides, and bonfires some evenings! Not to mention the beautiful 126 acres that kids love to run around on. Parking is free on the weekdays, a couple bucks on Saturday, and they are always closed on Sundays. You'll do more walking during the week since they don't run the tractors to take you to certain areas of the orchard like they do on Saturdays. We love a nice fall day (like today was) spent at Royal Oak, just enjoying the fresh air as we pick fruits and veggies, nibble on fresh, steamy hot apple cider donuts and take pictures. You just can't have a bad day here, in my opinion. Bushels run about $16 each, and for us today, that meant about 40-60 small to medium sized apples. My half dozen donuts today were $4.50, and worth every penny! :) Many of the store items are overpriced, so I tend to stick to items that are truly unique to the farm or area, such as many of the apple bakery items, local meats and cheeses, jugs of cider, etc. They are always closed on Sundays, and are NOT open all year, just late summer through sometime in mid autumn. They charge a couple bucks for parking on Saturdays, but weekdays the parking is free. I think the tractor rides are only on Saturday. If you are able to, I think you'll find going on a weekday is much more enjoyable, as Saturdays are sometimes wall to wall people/kids. Trust me, a good tine will be had by all. =) read more

Our small family roadtrip to Royal Oak Farm was a blast. The only reasons why this place gets four out of five stars is because 1). this place is about two hour drive away from Chicago without traffic and 2). when we went, the abnormally large mosquitos were out in full force by the apple trees, which is really beyond the farms control but affected our experience. The U-Pick orchard was pretty good despite the infestation of mosquitos due to all the rain during the past couple of weeks. It certainly was more impressive than any other fruit farm I've been to. There is a $3 parking fee on Saturdays. The staff are very friendly and courteous. The outdoor lavatories were the cleanest and probably most sanitary that I've ever seen and the cafeteria-style country restaurant was very charming. The U-Pick is a pre-pay event. You pay for the type of fruit you want to pick in either half pecks, pecks or bushels, and you have the option of walking over to the U-Pick area or taking the tractor/wagon to be dropped off in one of the four or five designated areas with the different types of trees. We decided to work on a peck of peaches ($21) and a peck of apples ($13). Unfortunately, we came towards the end of the peach picking season, so it was difficult to pick a peck of peaches (say that three times fast) -- it took us nearly two hours to do so. There was, however, a great selection of apple trees... we tend to like the sweet yet crisp apples so we went for the Gala and Braeburn trees. Luckily, the crop was beautiful so we were able to pick a peck within 10 minutes and then run from the mosquitos. Although I still bear the mosquito bite welts from this trip a week later, I think it was very much worth it. If you are here with children and picking more than a peck, I would recommend borrowing a wagon (requires a refundable $5 deposit upon return of the wagon). After all our work, we decided to dine at the country restaurant for lunch and enjoyed a homemade chicken pot pie with a side of applesauce, and an Italian beef with a side of potato chips -- both of which were great (approximately $22 with fountain drinks). Afterwards, we went to the market/bakery and apple barn to look at all the goodies available for purchase. There's so many options including frozen or baked pies, and other homemade pastries. We picked up some delicious apple cider for the trip home. We would have spent more time at the farm if it were not for the length of our drive... but they do have a great entertainment area for children including a giant tee pee, a merry-go-round, a trackless train and a petting farm (additional fees apply). But this fills your mind with imagination and awe at God's magnificent gift of nature. Loved the Christian themed signs and scripture verses in various places. Very family friendly and wholesome for all. The apple picking was tremendous. Lots of space, natural beauty, clean air, and of course plenty of apples! Loved the many varieties that were in season this past weekend. Enjoyed filling our bags with fresh apples for apple pies and just plain eating out your hand. Of course one of the top highlights of the day was spending time in the small country store and bakery. WOW! The Freshly made (still warm) Apple Cider Donuts were incredible! This is a great orchard!!! We went there for the first time yesterday and were so impressed. Everyone was so friendly and everything was super clean (the port a potties were even "nice"). Apple picking is expensive no matter where you go, but we found their prices a little cheaper then other orchards. They also had at least 5 varieties we could pick and the trees were full of apples. We skipped the children's area because it was crazy hot out so no review there. The only downside was the restaurant closes early during the week so we couldn't grab a bite to eat. So finally after having lived here for years we made it to Royal Oaks! It's somewhat inside the crowded areas to get to but easy if you take IL 47 to get here. A nice well maintained huge farm. It was busy full of cars well marked parking area with a person to guide you! Has restaurant and gift shop with lots of good stuff to shop and eat, of course! Kids tried train and we all took wagon tour which lasts 30 min to look at 40,000 apple trees with 45 different varieties. They have petting zoo and buffaloes as well. The tour quite was hilarious and very informative. Saw honey bee cultivation area as well. They have play area, carousel, maze and fire pit place. We had a GREAT TIME! I came here over Labor Day weekend to pick apples and had a mixed experience. Pros: --The apple orchard is huge. We picked a peck for 16 bucks (about 10-12 pounds of apples). We probably spent about an hour in the orchard and that was with only two varieties of apples available. We sampled a couple of the apples as we picked, and they were certainly delicious. --The landscape around the farm and orchard is pretty scenic--lots of large, older trees mixed in with farmland. --The food at the little restaurant is pretty decent. I had an egg salad sandwich that was very tasty. We also bought a box of the cider doughnut holes in the store, which were delicious. Cons: --The petting zoo is pretty terrible. There are a few goats, a couple of sheep, and a couple of calves. There are also quite a few chickens and geese (that you can't exactly pet). Unlike petting zoos I've been to elsewhere, you can't really mingle with the animals here. They're kept behind a wooden fence inside a barn-type building, so you have to pet them through the slats. Also, the number of flies in the building is beyond belief. --If you didn't realize this orchard has religious overtones before you arrive, you certainly will about 3 seconds after you enter. Not only is there a miniature Noah's ark replica for children to play on, but there are literally about 100 signs throughout the restaurant and store displaying biblical quotations, etc. They were even showing a church service/gospel choir on the TV in the restaurant. It was a bit much. I had a pleasant experience coming here once, but would probably go elsewhere next time--preferably somewhere with a better petting zoo. read more
