I have tried Royal Oak Masala twice. The first time was right when they opened. My first experience was really odd. I had ordered chicken tikka masala and palak paneer and neither of them tasted like anything. My friend and I questioned if we had both gotten Covid at the exact same time (which we hadn't). The second time I tried them was definitely better and more recent. I wanted to give them a second try. I got the same 2 dishes and they had some flavor this time, but it was a very dull taste and I felt like I could have made the same or better at home. Decided to give this place another try. It was night and day difference compared to my initial review. Ordered butter chicken with mild spice and lamb chop. Butter chicken was creamy and savory. Chicken was tender. Hit all the spots for this iconic dish. Wanted to get this dish so I could judge it objectively rather than try something new like I did last time. I'm glad I did and happy to report while the chicken was good, the sauce was even better and paired beautifully with naan and rice. The sauce does come with some spice at baseline even if ordered with no spice but it blended well unlike last time. Lamb chop was my "special order"; again, glad I ordered it. Lamb chops (x5) were cooked well, with a hint of pink, and mixed perfectly with Indian spices. I am happy to say these were devoured quickly after opening. It was a 5/5 dish that paired favorably with the sauciness of the butter chicken. The owner contacted me himself, apparently there was an interim chef at the time of my initial review who did not make the dishes accordingly and who has now left. I was told I was not the only complaint. I am happy to say the owner - Sam - was cordial and apologetic about the situation. He made sure the dishes were cooked to his standards this time. There are few restaurants who's owners would go above and beyond in a situation like this and I will definitely be returning to Royal Oak Masala. read more

The Mango Chicken, medium spice, is excellent. The side of rice was very dry. The garlic naan was perfectly toasted, but could have used a bit more garlic. The service is ... insufficiently attentive, especially so given that only two tables were occupied. The venue is modern and clean. I do like that their POS prints a QR code on the check that directly links to Apple Pay. It truly eliminates the CC payment shuffle and significantly improves security. Will I return? If visiting friends in RO, sure. But I do not live nearby and have a plethora of excellent Indian restaurants that are closer ... and I can avoid the goofball parking (cough) "system" that the city installed. read more

I'm sorry but no. I love good and true to origin Indian food but this was nothing like that. My further disappointment is due to the fact that we have chosen this place to celebrate my birthday. Almost everything was wrong, the service was lacking, the time we had to wait to get our meals and the food itself. Mango lassi was watered-down and had very little mango flavor. Gobi Manchurian had almost no batter and the sauce tasted like European condiment "maggi". Those who know, know. The portion was very small. Veg samosa was ok, freshly fried but no peas inside, just potato and is wasn't filled completely. I had vegetable korma and they were able to make it vegan, so that is a plus but I wanted medium and there was ZERO spice in this dish. The server had to bring me some extra chili paste so I could make it a little spicy. Also, portion was very small. Shrimp curry was ok, but also very little spice and for the price the portion was very small. Rice portion for both of us was so tiny, I had to eat some of my curry without it, so my husband could have more. Garlic naan was good. Roti was ok, very small and thin. We eat a lot of Indian food and usually we have leftovers for next day, here we ate everything since the portions were so small. And we paid $62 so that is not small amount. I was very eager to try this new place but left feeling highly disappointed. Nothing tasted like Indian food, more like Americanized Indian food.... Another thing, they charge you almost 4% when you pay with card. Nobody said that to us before the bill came. It's the same owner as Main Street kitchen that we used to go to so often before it was sold to the new owner. We went once since the new owner and haven't been back, food wasn't as good after it changed hands at all. Do keep in mind they do charge 3.5% for credit card usage on your bill after they run your card. We were both looking forward to the good Indian we have missed when he owned the Clawson location. We ordered two mango lassi, gobi Manchurian, medium spicy, crispy, butter chicken, Chana masala, veggie korma and tadka dal, all medium spicy. $69.89. The first mango lassi were creamy, tall, but I wasn't able to taste the mango prominently at all. I asked for more mango. The second mango lassi, the mango was at least more notable. The staff indicated he made it fresh for us too. Our first gobi went to a different table. The second came out to us hot, fresh and slightly crispy, but not burnt. It had good flavoring to it and nice heat to it too. The lentil was tasty, even if it was quickly whipped up for us. Wasn't ready for it to be on the menu yet. The butter chicken was creamy, saucy and not dry at all. The veggie korma wasn't too sweet for us, it was good. The Chana masala was quite goody, yummy curry flavoring for sure. All of the food had good flavor and the perfect amount of heat too. Happy to have a tasty Indian restaurant in our neighborhood, it's much needed too. Been back several times. Their food is very tasty. Especially the panipuri. Portions are generally small for the price they charge. Biggest issue is the service. They simply do not understand friendly service. There isn't even a friendly greeting by staff when you enter. Each time I was here, the server was completely new and inexperienced. One time, at the peak of lunch hour, they had a ladder out and we're trying to drill a hole using an impact driver. Even when asked to stop, they just moved the ladder outside and continued to drill. Service clearly escapes them. Other odd think is they close between lunch and dinner. Came here a few times for a late lunch, only to find them closed. If you are going to charge premium prices, you need to provide a pleasant dining experience. The other new Indian restaurant in town may not have food as tasty, but all the staff understand friendly service. read more

I'm so happy to see an Indian restaurant on Main Street in Royal Oak! We stopped in here for date night and really enjoyed it. Every dish we tried tasted great. My only take-away is to specify your spice level. What's medium to one person is hot to another, so be specific with what you're looking for. Restaurant was clean and the service was top notch. The food was great and the staff was extremely friendly! I got the butter chicken (which I would definitely get again) and my friend got the chicken vindaloo (which I found out when I went to pick up the food is recommended by the chef) and both were delicious. Will definitely be back to try different things on the menu! The only thing I'd say is, my friend is gluten free and got a gluten free naan but it was not labeled so we had to figure out which naan was gluten free/not when we got home so would recommend asking them to label the naans when buying take out. read more

This place was very clean and the service is excellent. They have items clearly marked on the menu as; gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian. Which is helpful, because I'm two out of the three. We ordered; gobi manchurian, Chana Masala, aloo gobi mattar and roti. Everything was fresh and delicious. We even ordered a second batch of roti and the made it up fresh. My uncle told me he previously had a great experience here and during that visit the food was excellent and the owner was onsite and overly hospitable. This time the owner was absent and while the food was great, the service not so much. We arrived at 9:15pm and were forewarned that the kitchen would close at 9:30 so promptly ordered. We did not expect, however, for the bill to be brought halfway thru our meal and to be practically pushed out the door at 9:55pm (they close at 10pm). The waiter hovered over us for much of the last ten minutes and essentially said we had to go because his ride was waiting for him. It was so rushed, we had to ask about taking our drinks to go. In many years of dining, not sure I've ever been "thrown out of an establishment" but that's exactly how this felt. Shame too, because the food was good. If you want everyone out at 10pm, maybe stop seating people at 8:45? - just a thought. read more

So so very terrible I'm almost surprised they are even open. The fact that I had a decent meal the first time was completely wiped out this time. We ordered 4 items and they were ALL bad. Both the garlic and the regular naan were terrible. Aside from some scattered garlic on the garlic naan, they were basically flavorless and underdone. The butter chicken had a little spice but absolutely no other flavor that would make you think it was butter chicken. The tiki masala was sweet but not much more than that although my son said it was spicy too. And lastly the samosas were barely cooked so the outside was soft and had no texture while the inside was cold and the dough was still raw and pasty. 100% will not be back and will not recommend. I asked for medium/high hot for the butter chicken and got mild. I should have said Indian hot. The sauce was heavier in the tomato flavor, not spiced like I am used to. The lamb tikka masala was very good. That was also one of the better dishes. The biryani was different from any biryani I have had. The rice almost seemed like an instant basmati rice, and the vegetables and spices were lacking. The garlic naan was also very bland. It was like regular naan to me.
