The food was hot, fresh and on time otherwise. We had: veggie samosas, Jamaican beef patties, the NY style chicken and rice platter, butter chicken and veggie curry. There are 2 Indian restaurants in walking distance that also have tikka masala but let me tell you why I get it here. First the portion is bigger, I guess I should eat less but an extra cup of rice and half a cup of sauce isn't going to break the bank for a restaurant . The chicken in the masala I think is shredded stewed chicken thighs that are so tender. The two Indian restaurants in town have big cubes of breast meat that have been cooked so long they are hard and chewy. They also take up so much space there is not enough sauce. Plus Detroit eatery is a few dollars less. I haven't even gone into the menu which has a lot of other good things. The generals chicken is good, and the lamb pita is also good. read more

We grabbed a couple of dishes and they were all flavorful- would highly recommend Jamaican patty (we only got one but menu says two included) chicken and lamb New York style bowl and a butter chicken. The rice is perfection (not too sticky, every grain individual) - token Indian appreciation for this alone. The New York style bowl is flavorful however I wish there was just a little more sauce New York style. My favorite dish was the Paneer Tikka Masala. Very spicy and delicious! Vegetable Samosas were quite appetizing as well. I personally would pass on the Chili Garlic 65 next time as it was a bit too spicy and the flavors weren't as exciting to me. Not a strong contender for vegetarians, GF or vegans. Ordered the butter chicken with more veggies sans rice, NY style chicken rice platter with more veggies instead of rice and 2 railroad house salads sans croutons and Italian dressing. I've been wanting to try this place for a while. It looks like they have quite a large selection of ice cream from Ben and Jerry's. They also have a few different kinds of magnum and Valente and some popsicle type ice cream's for the kids. They have the magnum and it looks like the Klondike bar and an ice cream sandwich, looks so good. I'm so hungry. The mango lassi looks good too. Place looks like a candy shop when your blood sugar gets low and you haven't eaten all day. I think this was previously a hotdog place at one point. I never made it to the hotdog place before it shut down. It's good to see something else in its place. They really want to put the meat on a bed of lettuce as filler. I told him I didn't want the lettuce since it will wilt under it, he said it would look half empty. I said that's fine. He asked if I was okay with Ranch sauce on my order, I asked what it went on, he asked if I read the order, I said I hadn't. He said it goes on the chicken. I asked for it on the side. I eat the salad with the dressing I had at home. The creamy Italian is some new brand-name packet and nothing special. The butter chicken taste really good. I also found that the New York style chicken platter is quite tasty, has a bit of cheese on top. My husband really enjoyed the butter chicken best the NY style chicken wasn't bad but the butter chicken was the tastiest. The cleaning of the chicken needs a bit of work since I found a chunk of gristle in my butter chicken, but one piece. The salads were okay. They are conveniently located in the heart of downtown Royal Oak, and their hours are very accommodating. We frequently stop by after bar hopping. My favorite entrée is the NY chicken and rice platter, with extra white sauce. Their lamb is also delicious. Their butter chicken is good, but the sauce is definitely on the sweeter side. As for dessert, the coconut milk cake is amazing. I keep telling myself that I will try new things, but I keep coming back to the chicken and rice platter. A friend told me this place was nothing too special, but I decided to give it a try anyway because it's halal and it had a hot 5 star rating. I'll start by saying the gentleman working at the register was very nice and helped us make a choice. The menu is pretty small but very random. There's butter chicken and mango lassi, then there's tres leches cake and wings, which is pretty cool if you like fusion foods. The place is really small, with only one table and some bar stools inside, but there's additional seating outside. We ordered the gyro and chicken over rice, which was not bad, but definitely not something I'd go back for. The jamaican jerk wings were baked, and tasted like something that came out of a pressure cooker, not crisp and without the bbq sauce on the side, would not have been eaten at all. The hot dogs were plain, but were grilled, and actually tasted better than your average halal hot dog (I have yet to find a good one). Service is dead. Between the restaurant and the delivery person, there were several mistakes made with my order wrong. I ordered naan, they sent me pita. I ordered saag paneer they sent me saag with chicken. Grub hub delivery person left my order on the front porch to freeze on the coldest day of the year without knocking or ringing the bell. Grubhub delivery status never updated in the Yelp app. It didn't update when the order went out for delivery. It didn't update when the order was delivered. when order was out for delivery never indicated This is not the first time I've had this happen. I know the GrubHub app and GrubHub delivery person have nothing to do with the restaurant. But maybe it makes sense for them to get some feedback on how crappy the grub hub service is and how it reflects on them. I showed up at the time of the confirmation and the gentleman explained that they had to remake it because it sat too long. I mention this because most other businesses would have shrugged it off and given me the food that had just been sitting there. To me this is a sign of a reputable business. Now if you have never had NYC street cart food don't even bother commenting on this. Hubby and I go to nyc 2-3 times a year and eat plenty of gyros and street cart food. In Michigan I have tried just about every gyro I can and to be honest none of them are any good. They are blah in flavor and a bit tough. Detroit Eatery finally made a gyro that is NYC equality. The meat is spot on to cart eateries and flavor is fantastic. The meat is so tender it melts in your mouth. This place nailed the flavor on the gyro even though we had the deconstructed gyro. Now the only down thing I can say about this place is a bit of menu confusion. What I ordered was the gyro & chicken and rice. I thought it would come with the lamb gyro and rice but what is was is basically a deconstructed gyro. The pita is actually the gyro which I found out later. The guy working there said the owner doesn't get it about people thinking a gyro is no bread. Wrong answer, but the right answer is NYC flavor and that they nailed. Will have to try some other items to see street car quality but 5-star on the food. You also have to wait a bit for your food which means it's not stuffed in a microwave and they actually prepare your food! Yea UPDATE: this time I got the actual gyro but it's called a pita for some reason the owner thinks a pita means gyro. Whatever. But I have to say I may stick with the deconstructed one. The pita was good but I'm not sure if it's because of big chunks of meat instead of shredded and it's not wrapped to hold together well or what but the deconstructed one was much better. Still the best over all the other Michigan gyros I've had but this one I just wasn't as happy with. 9/8/20: got their NY Style meal and this time they changed the spice and it no longer tasted like the NY street gyros I've come to love.
