I've lived in Hutchinson for 23 years, and today is my first time at Roy's. Not not sure why I always skip this place, maybe because it's a 20 minute drive from my house. Anyway, I was heading to the landfill and figured I should try it at least. I've heard good things about it and the reviews on yelp seem good, but it's pretty disappointing in my opinion. I on a scale of one to 10, this is a 5 for me. I picked a 2 meat dinner with ribs and brisket . Both meets lacked smokiness or any flavor really at all. The lady said they put sauce on everything and I can see why. My dinner came with salad bar, which I took to go. There's only a few things to choose from, so I got the slaw and some pickles. The slaw was pretty flavorless. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to put barbecue sauce on it also. The side of barbecue beans had a weird texture to the beans, and not a strong barbecue flavor. I don't know maybe I'm spoiled with Joe's Kansas City, and have much higher expectations now. I also would not recommend this place if you are celiac/gluten-free.

Was enjoying it so much I forgot to take a before.

If you're having s bad day, you'll want to stop in to Roy's Roy's is a staple of the community in Hutchinson, KS and they definitely do make you feel like you're part of that, even if you're just passing through. Dining here felt like dining at a friends house: cozy and welcomed! I had the small sandwich meal with beef brisket. I was given a small plate for my sides, which was great bc that means you are NOT leaving hungry. The portion was just right. What was even better than the portion size was the actual food. The beef brisket melted in my mouth like butter. Juicy. Yum. The homemade bbq sauce made my palette feel as though it took a trip to Disney World. Yes. It was exciting and bursting with flavors. An equal balance of spicy and sweet. The consistency of the sauce allowed for the perfect bite. Not watery and not super thick like most bbq sauces. This bbq sauce changed my life. Don't think about it, just have your lunch or dinner here.

Roy's Hickory Pit BBQ--9/14/21 Case summary: Definitely a good BBQ joint when looking to scratch that itch. Roy's will definitely satisfy it in spades. Food 4/5 Service 5/5 Overall 4/5 Food 4/5 Roy's Hickory Pit BBQ features typical BBQ fare including sandwich deals, multi-meat dinners and the delicious sides we all love. On this particular outing, I chose the four meat dinner with ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork and a hot link. All dinners include one round to the salad bar, two slices of Texas toast and a side of baked beans. Starting off with the meats, I would rank the ribs above all as they were simply smoky, pull off the bone delicious. When topped with their house BBQ sauce, it was simply perfect. The pulled pork and hot link were also tasty, but just like any other BBQ joint I've had before. This unfortunately leaves the beef brisket in last place and I found it was slightly dry and did not pack the smoky aspect of the other meats. The smoke ring itself wasn't defined and could use a bit more of that hickory smoke to bring it all together. The baked beans were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. During my visit the salad bar was very limited (perhaps due to COVID-19?) and I picked the coleslaw and macaroni salad both of which were of the typical fare as well. Service and Overall thoughts 4/5 Staff was friendly and effective to get the orders out as quickly as possible. The soda machine was self-serve and the establishment itself is fairly tiny (think five or six tables total), but don't let this dissuade you from seeking BBQ at Roy's. If you are craving BBQ and don't mind a little bit of a drive, I would definitely give Roy's Hickory Pit BBQ in Hutchinson, Kansas a try.

man this was a great bar-b-Q worth the wait. Cars lined up before 1100 and small venue with 5 tables definitely no frills but hmmmm hmmmm good.

The best BBQ in the state of Kansas; maybe the entire Mid-West! Just be sure to get there early or you'll be SOL.

I stopped by RibCrib BBQ & Grill while in town and was looking forward to trying a local barbecue…read morespot. The ambience was actually one of the stronger points of the visit. The walls are filled with decorations and memorabilia, and there are plenty of TVs around the dining room, which makes it a comfortable place for someone dining solo. I ordered the three-meat plate and paid the extra $2.99 upgrade for the brisket. Unfortunately, the brisket was the biggest disappointment of the meal. It came with three slices that were roughly four inches long and quite thin, and the meat itself was very dry. They didn't appear to be much effort to keep it moist. It lacked the smoke flavor you'd hope for from barbecue. Almost felt like it was cafeteria produced and an assembly line for multiple meals, but yet I was maybe an hour before closing and there were three other solo diners plus a large party. I also tried the hot links, which unfortunately tasted fairly plain and again didn't have much of that smoky barbecue character. The St. Louis ribs, however, were actually very good. They were tender and flavorful, but the portion felt a bit light....only two ribs were included, and given how small the brisket portion was, a third rib would have helped balance the plate. The real standout of the meal ended up being the baked beans. They included brisket burnt ends mixed into the beans, and they were excellent. Honestly, I could have happily eaten a double portion of those. The Texas toast felt pretty standard likely the frozen variety warmed on a flat top. I sampled a few of the house BQQ sauces as well. The Memphis-style wasn't really my preference, and the spicy sauce had a bit of heat but it was inconsistent. You'd notice it in one bite and then not at all in the next. Service was okay overall, though it seemed like my server may have gone on break during the meal without handing off the table. I had to flag someone down halfway through to get a drink refill, especially since water isn't offered automatically. The mashed potato's used a breakfast pepper gravy which was odd tasting and you could tell it was a packet powder. Overall, the atmosphere was enjoyable and the baked beans were genuinely great, but the barbecue itself felt inconsistent and especially the brisket. As someone who enjoys cooking barbecue at home, I know how good it can be when it's done right. If anything, I might come back just for another serving of those beans... and maybe to see if they'll share that recipe. Haha

Good food. Helpful staff. Enjoy the experience. Friendly staff. Enjoyed the salad and a beer.read more
