I hadn't paid attention to the hours on Yelp, and when I saw the sign on the door that said "11:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or until sold out," I told my wife, "Hopefully they still have some food left!" It came with two sides from the cold case, beans, corn, pickles, and a drink. I ordered the brisket and ham sandwich, which also included two sides, beans, corn, homemade pickles, and a drink. The prices were very reasonable. After selecting our sides, we grabbed a small plate of beans, corn, and homemade pickles and found a seat in the second dining room. The restaurant has a large community table in the front room along with additional seating in the other rooms. Before our main dishes even arrived, we were impressed. The beans and corn had excellent flavor, and I was tempted to go back for more. When our meals arrived, they looked absolutely amazing. My wife's ribs were huge, tender, and practically falling off the bone. Her brisket looked moist and perfectly smoked. My brisket and ham sandwich was piled high and looked just as good. I was disappointed they had sold out of the bologna, but after trying the ham, I quickly got over it. I've lived in Hutchinson for 23 years, and today is my first time at Roy's. Not not sure why I always skip this place, maybe because it's a 20 minute drive from my house. Anyway, I was heading to the landfill and figured I should try it at least. I've heard good things about it and the reviews on yelp seem good, but it's pretty disappointing in my opinion. I on a scale of one to 10, this is a 5 for me. I picked a 2 meat dinner with ribs and brisket . Both meets lacked smokiness or any flavor really at all. The lady said they put sauce on everything and I can see why. My dinner came with salad bar, which I took to go. There's only a few things to choose from, so I got the slaw and some pickles. The slaw was pretty flavorless. I'm beginning to wonder if I need to put barbecue sauce on it also. The side of barbecue beans had a weird texture to the beans, and not a strong barbecue flavor. I don't know maybe I'm spoiled with Joe's Kansas City, and have much higher expectations now. I also would not recommend this place if you are celiac/gluten-free. read more

I was given a small plate for my sides, which was great bc that means you are NOT leaving hungry. The portion was just right. What was even better than the portion size was the actual food. The beef brisket melted in my mouth like butter. Juicy. Yum. The homemade bbq sauce made my palette feel as though it took a trip to Disney World. Yes. It was exciting and bursting with flavors. An equal balance of spicy and sweet. The consistency of the sauce allowed for the perfect bite. Not watery and not super thick like most bbq sauces. This bbq sauce changed my life. On this particular outing, I chose the four meat dinner with ribs, beef brisket, pulled pork and a hot link. All dinners include one round to the salad bar, two slices of Texas toast and a side of baked beans. Starting off with the meats, I would rank the ribs above all as they were simply smoky, pull off the bone delicious. When topped with their house BBQ sauce, it was simply perfect. The pulled pork and hot link were also tasty, but just like any other BBQ joint I've had before. This unfortunately leaves the beef brisket in last place and I found it was slightly dry and did not pack the smoky aspect of the other meats. The smoke ring itself wasn't defined and could use a bit more of that hickory smoke to bring it all together. The baked beans were pretty good, but nothing to write home about. During my visit the salad bar was very limited (perhaps due to COVID-19?) and I picked the coleslaw and macaroni salad both of which were of the typical fare as well. Service and Overall thoughts 4/5 Staff was friendly and effective to get the orders out as quickly as possible. The soda machine was self-serve and the establishment itself is fairly tiny (think five or six tables total), but don't let this dissuade you from seeking BBQ at Roy's. When they say 'fall of the bone tender', their ribs should be the photo next to it. I, truly, do not think I have ever had such tender ribs in my life. It was delicious and then some. I think our order was taken by the owner and she was so nice. I felt at home. In fact, I'd kind of like to make this my home! This is one of the best BBQ places in the state which is saying something with KC (Joe's, Jack Stack, Q57!!! etc. ) and Wichita with Hog Wild, Bite Me, Delano BBQ, etc.. What they lack, slightly, in atmosphere compared to the much more expensive options, they make up for in friendliness and service. We managed to somehow drive right past Roy's the first time without realizing it was there. Located just ten blocks west of Main Street, look for a little yellow shack on the north side of the road, across from the train tracks. Or better yet, with some decent weather, drive with your windows down - you'll smell the mouth-watering scents before you spot it. I think my tummy just rumbled at the memory. Operated by the extremely genial Armstrongs, we were first greeted by the savory scents of pit barbecue, then by the sight of various meats mounded up in a display case on the front counter, and finally by a welcoming Mrs. Armstrong as soon as she finished up with the folks ordering ahead of us. I can't speak much to the "pick four" dinner that the boy and our friend shared - they seemed to love the ribs enough to go back and order one more for each of themselves (at just two bucks a pop). I, instead, had a whole order of the pork sandwich meal, which came on giant buttered Texas style toast, access to the "salad bar," and a side of beans. For under $10, I feasted like barbecue was going out of style! This sandwich (check out the pictures) was loaded to the brim and oozing off the bottom slice of toast. There was absolutely no way to pick it up and eat it gracefully, so I attacked it with my plasticware after loading up my other plates from salad bar. And by "salad bar" I mean "potato salad and coleslaw bar." There were also pickles and hot peppers, but I passed on those in favor of the more traditional side items. We very quickly discovered that the barbecue here is more southern style (reportedly); it had a sweeter taste to it, and underneath those overtones were the savory smoky flavor of cooked pork. Nom nom! The baked beans (also slightly sweet) paired perfectly with the pork sandwich, and I'm not sure how I managed, but every last scrap of food vanished from my plates (again, documented in pictures). This seems to be quite the local hangout, with plenty of regulars walking in the door and being greeted by name. At one point, Mrs. Armstrong was over at our giant round communal table in the front room chatting it up with some other elderly diners sharing the space. Heck, if I lived in this town, I'd probably make Roy's a regular haunt of mine as well! As it stands, I'm glad that we were able to partake in some local flavor while we were in town, and it was great to be so well taken care of at Roy's. Roadtripping through Kansas should require a stop in here for some good eats! read more

Quick take: The absolute, hands down, best BBQ in Kansas! Roy's has already been lauded in countless magazine articles and blog entries as some of the greatest BBQ in the US and I really can't add much more other than it's completely deserved. I'd put their brisket up against anything coming out of Texas but you really can't go wrong with anything on the menu. Smoky, tender, succulent. Even the toast is delicious! None of that cheap, two slices of Wonder Bread junk here. Be aware, your clothes will be perfumed by the wonderful hickory smoke if you choose to eat in but I say go for it and wear it like a badge of honor. There are very few BBQ joints that achieve perfection. Roy's is one of those places. You'll know when you open the door and it's packed with locals. Let's cut to the chase though: The meat is amazingly good, and the sauce, the other mission-critical ingredient to great 'cue, is that perfect Kansas balance between Texas peppery-twang and Carolina vinegary-sweet. The brisket is lean as can be and melts in your mouth. The ribs were meaty and cooked just enough that they were soft, but didn't fall apart on you. The spicy sausage was really spicy, which I love. Nothing timid there. They have sides in a cold bar, and perfect BBQ beans in a big warmer. They're fresh made because they have that nice crisp pop of beans made from scratch. They make two kinds of slaw, which is nice because I'm more of your clear slaw/bell pepper lover than the milky mayo variety. The potato salad was excellent, and goes well as a fire extinguisher for the spicy sausage. Roy's wife and son now run the place. They know most of the regulars by name, and the irregulars, like me, are greeted with that warm midwest hospitality that is the hallmark of a good rural barbecue place. There is a round table for singles in the main room, and a couple of small side rooms packed with tables. Barbecue sauce little spicy little sweet. I've only picked up a bottle of two other BBQ sauces out of the hundred or more joints around America at which I've eaten: Rudy's in Texas/NM, and Bryant's in Kansas City. Get there by 1p or 2p or they might run out of meat, as the sign out in front warns. They make just enough fresh to get through the day in one batch. So what they have, they have. It's a destination 'cue spot. If you're within forty miles of the place, according to Yelp, make the trip. It's a fun, very homey place and absolutely worth it. read more

I am a BBQ blood hound. I look for a BBQ joint everywhere I go. Roy's is one of those places you are happy to find. Get here before 1:30 pm. It may be closed or almost out of most choices...they close when out of meat! You walk in and smell the scent of smoke. The beautiful fragrance permeates the entire establishment and immediately you realize you found the right place. You can usually choose between chopped pork Bbq, ribs, ham, brisket and links and hot links. If you get the plate (your choice of 1,2,3 meats) you get a nice buttery piece or two of Texas toast as well as choices from the salad bar. The place has been in the same family for at least 500 years and they keep everything very simple. His as authentic of a BBQ joint as you can find. More than worth the stop. read more

Wow! If you are in the area and they are open (check they are only open for lunch from about noon to 2). This is a MUST stop. We had brisket, ribs and turkey and all 3 were so moist and delectable. Even the toast was wonderful. Brisket is Smokey chopped and perfectly tender. The ribs had a great smoke and flavor and just fell right off the bone. The turkey sandwich was spot on in every way. They have a salad bar with a bunch of salads, pickles and peppers great to accompany the meat. It is a small place and seating can be a little tricky but oh man finger liking good! read more
