"And I think it's gonna be all right Yeah, the worst is over…read morenow The morning sun is shining like a red rubber ball" (The Cyrkle) Pickle balls aren't red. They're either pink for practice or yellow for games. And they aren't made of rubber, they are plastic polymer whose chief characteristic is that it doesn't bounce very high. If you drop it from over your head, it will barely bounce to knee level. Learning (and remembering that fact about low bounces) is just one of the many things you'll need to master if you want to take up the sport. Pickleball was launched in the mid-1960s and is played on a smallish court with a modified tennis net, using a paddle and those perforated polymer balls. I'd best describe the game as the love child of tennis, ping pong and badminton. When you hit the ball, it sounds more like a thud than a ping! Similar to tennis, your goal is to hit the ball over the net and into your opponent's side while adhering to a myriad of rules about serving and counting bounces and staying away from a zone in front of the net that reminded me of the goalie's cease in hockey. Dill Dinkers has 20 locations across ten states. There is just one Connecticut location. Yesterday, we took our very first pickleball lesson at Dill Dinkers in Simsbury, in a space previously occupied by Borders Books. We joined a beginner's class with about 20 rookies and interacted with three exceptional and very patient coaches who gave us lesson time, practice drills and embryonic game play with instant feedback on performance and the rules (which I consistently violated). For the third year in a row, Pickleball is the country's fastest growing sport, and their courts are taking over empty shopping mall space across the country. After one lesson, I am looking forward to charting my "progress" over the next three weeks. I'm not very optimistic about that!

The courts have a great aesthetic and have really good quality surfaces. My favorite part is how much space there is between the baselines and the fences. Not once did I have to worry about hitting the barriers, and that allowed me to play much more freely. We encountered a technical difficulty during a tournament that caused us to play an opponent out of order, slightly messing things up which was a little frustrating in the moment. But the tournament organizer did a great job resolving it, and went above and beyond to offer some compensation in the form of free court time and some waived fees which is a huge testament to their customer service. I really appreciated that gesture. Will definitely be back here!

Came here just for a trivia event but the pickleball courts looked cool (have only played…read morepickleball once or twice and stopped after almost twisting my ankle). Seems like a cool space to hang out with friends and eat some just-ok BBQ. We had a hard time finding the entrance and almost went through the emergency exit but just know that it's on C Street and the signs for PKL/Pig Beach are pretty inconspicuous and small. We tried a few things off the Pig Beach menu, none of which blew my socks off. Ordered a sampler platter of BBQ meats, my favorite of which was the cheese jalapeno sausage link. The rest of the proteins were either dry/lacking in flavor (brisket) or doused in some indeterminable sauce that overwhelmed everything else (pulled pork). The best thing I ate ended up being the crispy chicken that my husband added to his salad. I wish they brought back the nachos on the previous menu. Parking: Limited meter options so get here with some time to spare. We did a few circles around the block before we finally found a spot in front of the building.

The facilities are clean and modern looking - they also provide paddles and balls which is great. The food was solid, service was pretty attentive with drinks and asks, and overall we had fun. I probably wouldn't come here on my own time due to the price, but otherwise, I enjoyed my experience and would recommend it to folks looking for an indoor pickleball session!

The only caveat is pricing -- it's definitely on the higher end. Now, let's talk about the food - wow, we were blown away. Everything we ordered was incredibly flavorful, beautifully plated, and far exceeded our expectations. You'd never guess a restaurant inside a pickleball club could serve up dishes with this level of quality. Everything tasted fresh and thoughtfully prepared -- no shortcuts, no "sport-club food" vibe here. The drinks and desserts also deserve a special shoutout -- they've crafted some really fun, one-of-a-kind items that tie into the pickleball theme in playful and creative ways. As for service, the staff was incredibly warm, attentive, and well-trained. We will be back!

The app wasn't too hard to use, although it seemed like it was iOS only when we tried so we had to use one person's phone specifically. Price is a bit high, but the facilities are nice. We ended up booking another court when our time expired since we were having such a good time. They could definitely enhance the experience by adding dividers between the courts to prevent balls from rolling over so often, but other than that, we had a nice time. If we're ever in the area again, we'd definitely come back!
