The wifey loves fish tacos so headed down to our local Rubios to feed the family dinner. No complaints about the fish tacos, they were fresh with a nice crunch and the sauce is tasty. I DO NOT however like the gotcha charge on the tortillas. My kids like an extra tortilla or 2 with their meal. I asked for extra tortillas at the counter. How many would you like sir? Thinking these are small fish taco tortillas, I asking for 6. Waiting for the food I scrolled my receipt and realized I was charged $1.25 PER TORTILLA! That right, it cost me $7+ dollars for some extra tortillas. El Pollo Loco charges $0.25/tortilla and other mom and pop's through some in at no extra charge. Now anyone that knows me knows that Rubio's is my main jam. Having been a loyal customer since my mother started taking me to the Encinitas location in the late '80's, I could not imagine my life without. While their fish tacos I'll admit aren't the best of the best in town, but they are good and quick. Now the Grilled Gourmet Garlic/Shrimp Tacos or the new BBQ Chicken tacos are a different story. Probably the best tacos I've ever had. They're like dessert for lunch or dinner. I try not to deviate too much from these as I was quite disappointed a few months ago when I stupidly decided to order their Enchilidas and they were bad. Taste, texture, everything. So the moral of the review, check out the Garlic Shrimp or BBQ Chicken Gourmet tacos and you should be happy. And the fish tanks in their restaurants are cool too! read more

We love coming here and have been for as long as they've been there. I have lived here my whole life! My son loves the traditional fish taco, and lemonade and I love the salmon tacos. I ordered the classic fish tacos to go here. Service was fairly fast and friendly. However the dish itself was not great for what I am used to at Rubios. Next time I will stick to the chicken items. The fish was okay but when something says "classic" I expect it to be their house special. Not just some run of the mill tacos. Maybe my expectations are too high. I love Rubio's but this location was a mess. I ordered their limited edition Cali burrito and it was the worst Cali burrito I've ever had. The meat was dry, flavorless, and inedible. Rubios is always a go to ! With three little ones eating out isn't always easy, especially with my youngest having a severe gluten allergy. We went there last night for dinner, it's easy , fast and the kids love everything on the menu ! Our cashier was also awesome , luckily because ordering is always complicated with us ! Aaron was patient, professional and suggested different foods to the kids which they all loved and remained gluten free for my youngest ! Even more our order was all correct even with all the add-ons and take offs! We tried the new enchilada plate which is to die for ( especially the shrimp ) and we will never go there without getting there Mahi Mahi Tacos and all the salsa you want at the Salsa bar ! This review is based on my experience today. I called like 10 times to place my order to just pick up... The first time they placed me on hold and after 5min we got disconnected. The second time they answer and hang up right away... so frustrated i called for last time and no answer. I was so hungry and since i have a late class i had to stop somewhere to get food. We love Rubios, and have been eating here for many years. The food is always good, no matter which establishment. The reason, however, for my less-than-5-star review is because of the poor customer service. When we walked in, we went straight to the front of the line since there was no one in line. We were not greeted by a single employee (even the on-duty manager) for about 4 minutes. And it wasn't that they didn't see us, the manager was standing right in front of us... It was that they ignored us there and continued to chat amongst themselves. And then once they addressed us there was no reference to the lack of attention they gave us. I noticed several of the staff with dirty looks on their faces and expressions of judgement after looking in the direction of customers. Again, food was great as always, I just hope that they will improve their customer service and treat the customers with a little more respect. read more

Love Rubio's - my fav is the Baja Chicken Burrito, mmmm! This location has a very outgoing, upbeat manager (or maybe it's just an employee), but he's always so quick to say hello and is super friendly. This location used to have a fish tank in the front, which was nice for the kiddos to watch while you wait - not sure why they got rid of it :-( I do like how spacious it is and the little patio in the back & along the side. First of all the food here is terrible. It takes forever to get your food. The food here is overrated and overpriced.

This has been one of the worst places i have ever visited. This rubios was not packed when we got there, and yet there was a 15-20 min wait. After 45-50minutes they were backed up even further. People who had been before us were still waiting and the food came out slower and slower. When we asked how much longer the cashier said idk and thats all. Lots of other angry people who stayed we grabbed our refund and left. Not even the rubios in mira mesa is this bad and they have a constant flow of people. read more

This review is specifically meant for Candice, the cashier who helped us today. I want to preface that the food at Rubio's is always wonderful and we usually have a great time. Today was an exceptionally difficult day, dealing with the loss of our family's matriarch. My family decided to go to an old family favorite to enjoy each other's company and share fond memories-- Rubio's. Candice, I know you weren't aware of our tough day... but that shouldn't matter. Being rude, condescending, and an unkind person to complete strangers is an unfortunate characteristic you have. We had a big order, but did not make special requests. We kept it simple. We didn't even fight you when you declined to refund us for the extra drink that you charged us for. It was unnecessary to also make exaggerated faces and make quiet underhanded comments when we were ordering. Our tough day was made a little more sour because of your demeanor and how you treated us. It's amazing what an impact that one person can have on someone's day. I sincerely hope you better represent Rubio's and start treating customers with a little more kindness. I hadn't eaten at a Rubios since high school, so truth be told I had quite low expectations for this chain fish taco joint. I wanted to go somewhere more authenticity Mexican, but my parents insisted I give this another shot. And wow, my expectations were completely blown out of the water! This place is certainly on the up and up! Fresh fish tacos with mango salsa served on real plates and silverware? What? I was so pleasantly surprised! My mom thoroughly enjoyed her salad, which was loaded with shrimp, mango, and quinoa, and my dad savored his lobster tacos. I will certainly be back! read more

I had a not so great experience turn good today by a very attentive young lady. I had ordered a two taco plate with one chicken and one steak taco, and the chicken was a bit dry also I had initially asked for black beans and some how ended up with pinto. As she was making rounds to each table we made eye contact and she quickly greeted me and asked how everything was tasting. I gave her my honesty and without hesitation she grabbed my plate and apologised and offered to make the entire plate fresh. She came back with a warm plate and I could tell she genuinely made an effort to insure my food was exceptionally delicious. I won't go there anymore. I just discovered the sign hidden low on the window where most people won't notice it warning that the food or cooking methods are carcinogenic. I have been eating here for awhile and mostly like the food, but I feel like they have purposely put that sign where it is not noticed and continued to cook in ways that are bad for our health. Why not just change the method of cooking or use safer ingredients? Probably because it would cut into their bottom line. read more

Delicious, fresh tacos and burritos. I like that you can customize your food. Orders are placed at a register, then food is promptly delivered to your table. The fresh salsa bar is always available. The tomatillo salsa is my favorite. My last order was Original Fish Beer Batter Burrito, I added shrimp and substituted the chips for rice. In addition to that my husband and I split a side order of brown rice mixed with quinoa which I doused with salsa before consuming- it was delicious! read more

Well, in general, I'm a big fan of Rubios'...the concept, the food, and locations. But tonight, poor food prep, slow service, and poor customer management ruined our dinner. Our receipt showed we ordered dinner at 7:05pm and were given our number sign (55) to take to the table. Nearly 20 minutes later, our fish tacos and a burrito ($20) arrived AFTER I went to the counter to ask when 15 mins had elapsed. BAD SERVICE: When we commented on how long things took, the answer from the server was, "well, sometimes the kitchen gets backed up and we just have to wait."....wow. There were only three other parties being served in the restaurant (10 people) so I assume what she meant was take-out orders were taking precedence. BAD FOOD PREP: Then to add to this, our food was luke warm at best, the refried beans were cold, and the chips had been in the beans long enough to get soggy. MORE BAD SERVICE: Later, another employee came by to ask how everything was and when we explained, he suggested, "well, the next time you come in, let THEM know and maybe they'll do something for you..." Are you kidding? That's how you address a problem? NOTE TO GENERAL MANAGER: Jason, really?
