Ruby is absolutely incredible! She's been cutting my husband's (unruly, difficult, wavy/curly with several cowlicks!) and my (very straight and slippery) hair since we moved here almost 5 years ago, and I've recommended her to every friend who's moved to the area. (My friends' younger sister, who lives over an hour away, scheduled a haircut with Ruby to coincide with a visit to see us because she trusted Ruby to give her a good pixie cut since she's seen the results on her sisters' hair.) She could honestly be charging way more for her services and doing the Washington bigwigs' hair, but her prices are very affordable and she's incredibly talented. Yes, my term for hair dressers, weave healers, hair healers, hair magicians. All the above! So I'm looking and looking and for the life of me could not find any consistent reviews. Then I happen to find this one.... Everyone rated Ruby 5 stars! Say it ain't so! No way! Wow! Okay so I decide that I am going to try her out. I book my appointment and come in. She was attentive and also made it a point to text me to confirm my visit. I came in and she sees my madness. She says she can't do it. I'm devastated! I'm almost in tears. I was doing highlights and a touch up. She says she needs more time and I was a little late. Ugh! She also says that the color I told her was not correct! Ahhhhhhhhhh! My last one was very disappointing. it was not until I got home that I realized what a poor haircut I had received. I texted her in advance and to my surprise we she had availability. Her directions were easy to follow and the salon is conveniently located at Wheaton mall. She was extremely patient and made sure I explained thoroughly what I wanted before we started anything. Informed me of what best suits my hair, helped educate me with styling. Ruby is a great example of why I love Yelp. I would've never found her on my own. I was skeptical given the low prices but after looking at all of the pictures uploaded I decided to give Ruby a chance. A couple of messages later we settled on a time in the same week that I messaged her. I told her what I wanted, she shared her suggestion, and got to work. I couldn't be happier with the result. She kept the length of my hair which was my number one priority, added some long layers, and blow dried it. A normal shampoo, cut and blow dry would be $35 but because my hair is longer the price was $45 -- still very cheap!! I also ended up buying the leave in conditioner she used in my hair for $15. After all of that plus a 15% tip, I still paid less than I would have in a salon in DC. I'm so happy I found Ruby. She's my new stylist! read more

She answered quickly and we agreed on a time that worked well for us both (a Sunday morning even!!). Since my longtime hairdresser closed down her business at the start of the pandemic, I've been trying salon after salon with no luck. I tried a lot of the fancy, highly rated "salon and spa" type places in Bethesda and Rockville. I have medium wavy hair with layers and bangs. Inevitably, I'd end up with layers that made me look like I had a helmet on, or worse, a mullet. Or the bangs would be short. Or they'd be too afraid to take any length off and it would just be flat in the back. I found Ruby on Yelp and through google reviews which were ALL stellar. But so were the ones for those "salon and spa" places. I figured I have very little to lose. At least this wouldn't be as expensive. Oh wow what a surprise -- she's absolutely fantastic. I showed her the same photo I showed everyone else of my favorite haircut from my old hairdresser. And in about 30 mins, I had my pre-pandemic haircut back! After reading many reviews on yelp I decided to take a chance on Ruby and visit her for the first time. It was a chance I was very scared to take, but I'm very glad I did. Ruby was extremely polite and understanding as soon as I walked in the door. My hair is extremely damaged thanks to years of home dyeing my own hair, and I was afraid that I would end up with huge short spots due to breakage from the wash and blow out. Thankfully, she had experience with damaged hair and was able to wash, cut, and blow out my hair without any problems, and even provided me with helpful tips to make sure my hair stays as strong as it possibly can in its current state. My hair hasn't felt this bouncy and healthy in years! My hair looked so tangled and wild when I walked in, but when I walked out it was smooth and shiny. She pays such close attention and really cares about the cut she's doing. I initially wanted bangs, but due to a cow lick I have near my forehead she warned me that my bangs wouldn't lay flat. Yep the reviews were legit. Ruby fit me in with short notice on memorial day weekend. She listened carefully about what I wanted, cut conservatively and had the gentlest touch in the world (I'm tender-headed). My color is uniform and there isn't a grey in sight... or even those lighter strands that you know are grey under the color, but you tell yourself they look like highlights. None of that. Her prices are great. 60 for color and 25 for a layered bob, can't beat that. Finally, Ruby is just plain nice. She has a really kind disposition, and I never felt rushed.
